Although a writer at any stage of development will find inspiration in this book—and at minimum an exercise or two to jump start your process—it really is focused on providing guidance and encouragement to the new writer, especially those that have always wanted to write but haven't yet made the commitment.

One of the best books on writing I've read, and I've read quite a few. Not sure if the author has convinced me to read *his* fiction, but this is a great book with lots of writing exercises (most of which I skipped, but read) that could be used in a workshop situation or writers group. Also has a short chapter on short-short stories/flash/sudden fiction, something I wish I'd found when I was researching that topic for a project recently.
I'm going to read this one again.

recommends it for:
anyone who wants a realistic approach to fiction writing
This is by far one of the best books I've ever read about fiction writing. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about how to be a better writer - it's funny and informative. The exercises are interesting and always leave me wanting to write for more time than what's been alloted. Serioulsy - from beginners to advanced writers, this is an excellent tool kit.

This book came at the right time for me as a writer. I was feeling whiny, downtrodden, stuck and ineffective--Dufresne's kick in the ass style coupled with great exercises and phenomenal discussion on the process of writing (in all its intricacies) has been invaluable. I have read the book cover to cover and am twenty pages into my 2nd read...it is that good.

A good book to assign if you're teaching an undergrad fiction class. It's a bit disorderly, so you'll have to work at shoehorning it into a set calendar, but there's great advice here and great generative exercises.

For some reason I've always been skeptical of how-to guides on writing fiction (it just seems too crafty and technical), but I really enjoyed this one.

My favorite craft book! I was skimming through it again for a course I'm planning, and it still impresses me. Highly recommended.
