If my disastrous experiences reading Joan Aiken's "sequels" to Jane Austen (Eliza's Daughter and Jane Fairfax) weren't enough to convince me that this type of undertaking is generally ill-advised, then Emma Tennant's atrociously written Pemberley did the trick...
Ostensibly a sequel to Austen's beloved Pride and Prejudice, Tennant's narrative of the beginning of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy's marriage strains my ability to suspend disbelief to the breaking point. ...more

Painfully boring. I was literally unable to finish this book. I got to the scene where Elizabeth throws an out-of-character hissy fit and runs off into the rain, disappearing on the grounds of Pemberley. Darcy's a mess, and they send people out searching for her. And it's quite literally the most boring "dramatic" passage I have read in my life. I don't care how big an Austen or Pride and Prejudice fan you are, don't subject yourself to this.

I read this story not long after reading "Pride & Prejudice" for the first time. I did not like it, but mostly because it stirred up conflict between Elizabeth & Darcy and cast a darkness over their marriage. I think that Austen needs no sequel.

I liked this book (surprisingly enough). I wouldn't recommend it to P&P fans though. I really wanted to give it 2 1/2 stars rather than 3 because I can't decide if I like "liked" it or if it was just okay. I read it quickly, mostly because it became easier and easier to get through as the story progressed and also because I really wanted to get to my next book (it's a library book so there's a time limit ;)

I was a bit disappointed in that it made it as if Elizabeth & Darcy did not have communication with each other. But in the original they had NO problem of saying what was on their mond, especially Lizzie! So this character makes her like a milksop. It still was a quick read that made me think of a different time than now, but it needed help with its timing greatly. It was all off!! It aged some people much faster than that of others. If it was only Lizzie's first Christmas with Darcy than Ly...more

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a fan in search of a good sequel can safely skip anything by Emma Tennant. She gets the language pretty well (except for "must needs," which I never read anywhere in JA) and she puts in a few melt-worthy Darcy/Lizzy scenes, but the overall plot annoyed me, particularly with the insinuation about Bingley, which was just a foil to raise Lizzy's suspicions against Darcy. So as I said, Jane Austen fans, skip this one. You'll find better sequels i...more

I really disliked this book. I had high hopes for it, but it just wasn't true to the spirit of Pride and Prejudice. I didn't feel like she had a good grasp of the characters, the events were too overblown, and the writing was repetitive and unoriginal. In other words, it was a big disappointment. I'll just stick with the original Jane Austen books from now on.

A passable attempt at a sequel to Pride and Prejudice. I had a hard time believing that Elizabeth would be so cold to her mother after her father's death, or that she was so mystified by Mr. Darcy. Any warmth the couple had in P&P was sucked away in this novel.

Where did the lovely and sprited Elizabeth Bennett disappear to? Nowhere near the pages of this disappointing Pride & Prejudice follow-up. Our heroine was nowhere to be found in this dreary Austen knock-off

Pemberley: or Pride and Prejudice continued is Emma Tennant's imagining of the life and marraige of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy. The story takes place a year after Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth's wedding; and takes the reader through the perils and pleasures of their marriage.
Eventhough I did not expect this story to equal Pride and Prejudice (afterall, there is only one Jane Austen), I had hoped this story would be better than the other sequel I had previously read. Instead, I found myself disspointed w...more

The author did a decent job recreating Jane Austen's style in this novel. Overall, she also managed to capture how a gathering of the Bennets, Catherine de Bourgh, the Wickhams, etc., would unfold.
However, there were several things that I did not like about the book. I take issue with how several of the characters were portrayed. I thought Georgiana Darcy's character was entirely inconsistent with the character created by Austen, as she was written as somewhat arrogant, fickle and a bit o...more

I'm a sucker for sequels of great novels. . . What can I say, I love closure. I can't pick up a sequel without reading it, even though I am bound for disappointment. Pemberley was a bizarre mix of Austen's cadence and modern thought processes, with a nice splash of awkward sex scenes thrown into the mix.
For example, Elizabeth and Darcy separate and almost divorce, because she doesn't feel like he's giving his whole self to her. Really? Did Austen's heroines really feel that way? Maybe t...more

The book was good in that it gave you some insight as to how Elizabeth and Darcy's life was after falling in love. However, I was disappointed at the end. I realize that the story must end at some point, but it seemed rushed and tried to tie things up rather quickly.
I would have much better enjoyed being left to my imagination again rather than speeding through a sordid ending.

This book is okay. It tells the story of the Darcys' first Christmas at Pemberly. Lady Catherine, Miss Bingley, Mrs. Bennet, and Lydia are all present and poor Lizzy is in a fix.
I liked reading about the characters again and some parts stayed in line with what I thought the characters would be like, but the story of Darcy and Elizabeth strayed from what I thought they would do.

Oh my... where did the original Elizabeth Bennet go??? I feel like she was portrayed as an insipid and shy version of herself. I feel very much as if this book didn't keep in tune with the earlier Pride & Prejudice characters. The only character that seemed to remain consistent was Lady Catherine!!!
It's still a decent read, but I was disappointed.

This book stressed me out! I think it fell right along well with Pride and Prejudice... but I didn't expect the storyline... I found myself falling right into Lizzy's imagination and hating Darcy and then loving him and then the end came on so quickly - I wanted there to be more! I wanted the final confrontation to have a bit more bulk, too.

I don't think these "sequel" books are any good. They are too influenced by our time. We don't know what its like to live back then. I didn't care for it.

This was the first of the many "continuing story of Pride and Prejudice" that I have read. It was interesting to find out what the author thought happened to the familiar characters after Elizabeth and Darcy were married. The story was okay, but who could ever come close to the wit and imagination of Jane Austen? Enough said.

This book was engaging. I would have rated it four stars, but when it comes right down to it, it wasn't Jane Austin. This one was definitely better than the other Pemberley book I read, though. The story line held my attention better, being somewhat along the lines of what Jane Austin would write. I found it enjoyable.

This author was not true to the character of Elizabeth Bennett. She is a strong, determined woman who is not easily intimidated. She was portrayed as the complete opposite in this book. If I could give it 1 1/2 stars, I would only because it held my interest. Definitely not a good book for true Austen fans.
