Kim Phillips uses a wide range of sources to provide a fascinating insight into the lives of English young women during the later middle ages. Whilst the author makes it clear that young women's lives were 'strongly shaped by community and social status, as well as by expectations of gender', she pieces together a complex, nuanced interpretation that emphasizes the diversity of individual experiences.
