Eric Carle's picture book 10 Little Rubber Ducks is both a counting book and a concept book. First, the reader can count each of the ten rubber ducks. Donna E. Norton writes, "the book is a concept book as the author identifies east, west, north, and south and left, up, and down(171). An allegory of globalization. A cargo ship from China accidentally dumps a box rubber ducks into the ocean. They are dispersed among the natural habitats of other animals, and one is eventually adopted by a real duck. While the other ducklings say, "quack," the rubber ducks makes a battery-operated squeak that will charm your child (as it does Naomi).

I suppose this is a good counting book to start children off with, and my little one definitely loved the "duck quack" she can emit by pressing a button at the end of the book, but the whole "storm tossing-getting lost and adrift-seeing wondrous oceanic things" kind of lost her. It's a good question -- how do children under the age of five see "travel"?

I loved this book because it's about 10 rubber ducks that go on a cargo ship across the sea and end up falling out of the ship and meeting up with other animals that can sing, blink, and chatter. Read the book to your children to find out what happens to the rubber ducks at the end of the book. :)

Along with New Socks this is Izzy's favorite book- she loves the quacking sound that the last page makes. I think I read it 15 times yesterday.

I love this book! I used it in my read aloud for my Kindergarten block and they love it! It is a good way to integrate math into the children's reading.

The best part about this book is that it's based on a true story and just recently another of the little rubber ducks showed up on a shore somewhere...
