The youngest in a long line of witches, Ari senses things are changing for the worse. For generations, her kin have tended the Old Places, keeping the land safe and fertile. Now, she finds herself torn between the world of mortals and the world of Fae, who ignore what occurs in the mortal world, for the roads between the two lands are vanishing into thin air.

It takes a good, patient reader to appreciate and follow this story. Especially one that is new to Anne Bishop's writing style.

This is what mainly turned me off when i was beginning to read the 'Black Jewel Series'. It takes a sharp mind to follow the flow, since the story shifts to one character to another without much of a warming. You were reading about our heroine-witch for a second and the next thing you know, without a warning, you are dragged into the fae lord's world. More than a few t...more

The world of the fae is collapsing while witches in another part of the world are being killed. The Pillars of the World is the story of one witch and the fae she interacts with. The jacket of the book hints that fae are very different than humans. They pass into the human world "only to amuse themselves." I guess I didn't really take that to heart, so let me reiterate that the fae are not very likable. They believe they are superior to humans and are only interested in their own well being. It'...more

Why do I keep reading these? They must have some kind of crack-like quality that is extra-appealing when one is sick.

This, as every novel by Anne Bishop, contains the following elements:

- A woman who is VERY SPECIAL but no one understands her and she is SO OPPRESSED. Animals and small magical beings are kind to her because they understand her SPECIAL SPARKLINESS.

- A hard-working and honest man who is ALSO OPPRESSED who understands her SPECIAL SPARKLINESS (like the ponies and such do) and will...more

OK, this is MUCH better than I thought it would be after trying (and failing) to get through the Ephemera series. With mythology clearly based on Greek myths, Anne Bishop has a lot to work with, and with the numerous vanities and self-absorption of many "deities" and minor "deities," there's no shortage of amusing petty one-upperies.

So why only three stars?

Because it is a trashy fantasy novel. I grade all trashy fantasy novels on a curve based on Wizard's First Rule because it is one of the earl...more

Start of a new series, yey! This was just what I was looking for. A nice fantasy novel, with a bit of "epic" to it without being "OMG I R EPIC!!!!" There's a difference in knowing that the story is going to go on past the first book and the weeping, wailing, gnashing of teeth, emo "everything is darrrrrrrrk" that gets passed as "epic" these days. (Can you tell it annoys me?)

Witch meets Fae. Fae doesn't "get" Witch. Evilbadman comes to kill Witch. Things Happen. That's the short version. The main...more

Consegue descrever m...more

Somewhere between 4 and 4.5 stars.

It took a little while to get into this book because of each chapter being from a different (and as yet unintroduced) character's point of view, but once the story got going, it was pretty enthralling and I am already wanting to see what happens in the next book.

I really liked Ari and Neall, and the Fae were generally unlikable for quite a long time. I was a bit disappointed that Dianna didn't really have much character progression, and Lucian only kind of did....more

Okay, first of all I just have to say this....OH MY GOD!!!!!!
Now that I feel a little bit better....This book is amazing, I can't believe it has taken me 6 years from when I bought the 3rd book at a yard sale until finally reading the 1st book. Anne Bishop is an amazing writing and I love her characters and her world SO MUCH. Is it bad that I still can't decide if I would rather have a Fae man than a human man? Probably...but there is just something I can't help but LOVE in Aiden...and Lucian......more

Dep...more

O seu res...more

Ahhhh that's more like it. I love Ms. Bishop's Black Jewels series but really disliked the Ephemera series. But this is very enjoyable. The start was a little slow due to characters just dithering around not realizing what was about to happen, but once things started, the pace clipped along nicely and the characters became more complex and interesting. As always, her world building feels solid and incredibly detailed. I also enjoyed the way she dealt with the Fae/human/witch issues. Not totally...more

Tir Alainn Trilogy by Anne Bishop, the first book is Pillars of the World, a story about witches of Wicca and strong women and men

I think most people know about Anne Bishop through her Dark Jewels Trilogy, which I did not care for that much, and which seems very different than the Tir Alainn trilogy to me. A guy I was dating lent this trilogy to me back in high school, and I’m glad he did, otherwise I might not have thought that well of Anne Bishop (though I still think she has a strangely split...more

Anne Bishop has done it again - created a world and peopled it with characters that are really fantastic. I was a little confused at the beginning because it just jumped right into the story without much explanation, but I sorted things out about a third of the way through. The descriptions of some of the things the Witches' Hammer did was gruesome and disgusting to read, and sadly they are methods used by actual Inquisitors. A powerfully told tale, one that I look forward to continuing in the o...more

I was still on my hiatus (supposedly) from PNR. I love, love, love Anne Bishop so I might be a little biased but, this was an interesting take on the Fae and witches combining them into one world. I have a crush on Lucien and I hope he appears again in the later books. All around good read. Bishop is not afraid of violence in her works and I appreciate that. I was disappointed in the end by Ari's decision, but all together it makes more sense within the novel, Personal choices aside. If you've r...more

Pillars of the World by Anne Bishop
"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live"

Recently I have re-read “Written in Red” for the second time in less than 2 months. I have read and re-read the Black Jewels saga several times over. I have craved, as a parched man craves water, a new Anne Bishop novel and all that was left, that I haven’t read yet was this trilogy. The “Tir Alainn Trilogy,” so I bought the first one. I am so angry with myself that I have waited so long to read this book – this trilogy....more

Adorei este livro...more

I'm dumbfounded. If someone were to tell me that i wouldn't like a Anne Bishop story i would have called them a liar. But i had a really hard time trying to finish this book, since i had stop caring about the characters a long time ago, and the world building was just lacking. What kind of Fae are we talking in this book? They're ignorant, and apparently not much older than an average human. How can they have lost so much information concerning their past? Yes, arrogance is a vice, but....not en...more

Enquanto o lia não me saiam da cabeç...more

Pieces of the world are disappearing. The roads between the worlds of the fae are vanishing, and no one knows what is happening to the habitants of those vanished territories. The fae leaders, including Dianna the Huntress, have heard that this damage is somehow related to the lost wiccanfae. In the human realm, a witch hunt is taking place. Lead by the wicked Adolfo, the inquisitors are going from village to village to find and kill witches. In one village lives Ari, a young witch who lives clo...more

Okay, I couldn't decide to give this 3 or four stars, because really, it's worth three and a half to me.

I should start off by saying that, for me, it was hard to read- not because it's badly written, because it's got the same prose as her other books, however it was just a little bit dull at parts. Sections I felt stretched out more than I cared to read about them.

I should also point out it's different from the other books from her I've read so far, Dark Jewels most of all. That's how it felt. D...more
