If you haven't discovered this gem for yourself, find a copy with all haste. It's a hilarious romp. Which I think is what Jerry Pournelle said about it, but it bears repeating.
Having just finished re-reading it, I found it just as engaging as the first time around. The language is a bit stilted -- everyone speaks in 40s slang -- and the ending is a bit abrupt, but it's still a great story and a lot of fun. I almost feel like I need to read it with Google handy, though, to catch all the char...more

This book is awesome. Not quite what you'd expect from a fantasy novel, and the idea therein is not quite novel either. I won't spoil it for you, though (depending on how well-read you are) the premise becomes virtually obvious almost right away, and you can't help but wonder at the ignorance of the main character: hasn't he yet figured out where he is? None of that matters. The writing is graceful, the story is handled carefully and the ending justifies everything. Loved it. So will you.

Without a doubt the best book of its kind that I have ever had the priviledge of reading. But classifying its kind might be a little bit more difficult. Fans of classics and myths alike will love this book...and even those who love history and plays will find something within its pages. Old favorites of all types are waiting to be discovered in the Commonwealth of Letters, and every reader will find something familiar to smile at...or to run from, as the case may be.

This was actually re-read. I read this book years ago and recently decided that I liked it enough to read it again. It's a fun and sometimes funny fantasy adventure through all myths and fantasy adventures that have preceeded it. Well, maybe not all, but there are an awful lot of references to.... just about anything.
Ideal for those who know a little about a lot. Or a lot about a lot.

This is an absolutely fantastic novel that pulls from classics of literature of many genres. It even includes characters and references from one of my favorite but little-known medieval French tale "Aucassin and Nicolette." It's so good that I used it in teaching a college lit class several years ago. Highly recommend!!!

Half the fun of the book is catching all the obscure references to literature and mythology. Thankfully, those references are not the book as there is an engaging story and likeable characters. The entire book is light, fun, and diverting, what good fantasy should be, but is also learned and beautifully written.

My buddy Tron, thanks Man! Excellent Christmas present!recommends it for: Anyone who likes to think!
Can you say hidden literary references? Did I mention there are TONS of literary references as you travel on this circular and peculiar adventure of the witty main character Silverlock? I recommend locating the Silverlock guide, you could read it ten times and not find it all.

A great book. Not one that automatically comes to mind when I'm asked for a great book to read, but one that I am always happy to talk about when reminded of.

I love this book!! I know it is kind of fluffy, but so gratifying for the literature buff. Sort of an ego trip, but an hilarious one.

An adventure through the literary world that's similar to having an all night rave with your favorite characters.

Gave up on this a little more than half-way through. I might go back to it at some point.

Great read - try to match up all the legends and stories that Myers taps into.
