The Colin Firth interview is hilarious! You just want to scream at Bridget to shut up and stop putting her foot in every time she opens her mouth! Just as wonderful as the first book!

Not quite as good as the original, nonetheless, spending more time with Bridget and her friends as they count alcohol units and worry about what underpants to wear on a date is a pleasant diversion.

This book should be retitled as Bridget Jones: The Unnecessary Sequel. Bridget returns as the hapless and can't-get-it-together heroine with plenty of love, work and weight troubles. The first book has a happy ending and I thought that was the end of it. Since it's so successful, of course the author cannot resist conjuring contrived plot lines for Bridget's second adventure.

After finishing Bridget Jones's Diary for the second time, I turned my attention to Bridge Jones: The Edge of Reason, by Helen Fielding, which I'd never read before. I have to say that with both books, there were definitely laugh-out-loud moments, although there were more with Edge of Reason than Diary.
I'm embarrassed to admit it took me at least to the middle of the book to realize that this book was a take-off of Persuasion. And once again, I admire Ms. Fielding's facility in translating a cla More...

I loved the first "Bridget Jones" novel. Though we are separated culturally (I'm American, she's British), and by decades (she was 30 in the late 90s, and I'm still not there yet), there's something that I can totally identify with: the obsessive listing, calculating, searching for subtext, the self-deprecating. And, as a Jane Austen junkie, there's the wonderful parallel to Pride and Prejudice: the overbearing mother, falling for the wrong man, and finding that the right man (a Mr. Darcy--Mark More...

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, a fictional work of British literature by Helen Fielding, is a whirlwind of a romance set in the city of Notting Hill. Bridget, the calorie, cigarette, and alcohol obsessed thirty year old, finds herself in unfortunate relationships that hardly ever work out for her. But eventually, she finds the man of her dreams, Mark Darcy. It has been “four weeks and five days [that she has] been in a functional relationship with an adult male,” portraying that she is not a More...

It's an unpopular feeling but I loved this book.
We all know that Bridget Jones's Diary ends with a happy ending of sorts, a feeling that everything is sorted out and people will just go about being happy... But I always have a hard time accepting that idea when a character is as over the top and flakey as the lovely Miss Jones.
And this book takes off and runs with the idea that there is no simple endings for these characters--they will still confuse, overthink and thrill each other as they go th More...

Terrible story, terrible characters, terrible writing, TERRIBLE BOOK! I didn't think anything could be worse than the first Bridget Jones but I was wrong. I wish I could give less than a whole star. A third of a star. Bridget is stupid, annoying, anti-feminist, and extremely neurotic. She continually makes ridiculous decisions and mistakes. The author resorts to placing characters into far-out, unlikely situations (Thai prisons and elaborate death threats) out of nowhere for no reason whatsoever More...

I didn't like the first book as much as I enjoyed the movie but I wanted to read it anyway cause I love the movie - the characters were much more superficial and I couldn't relate to Bridget as much. The story about her mother was pretty crazy - totally unbelievable - they tamed it down for the movie.
Anyway I thought I would try out the 2nd book thinking maybe the character had grown some but she was still just as bad and annoying and her friends were worse - being married and a mom I was reall More...

Fits of uncontrollable laughter. That would describe me reading this book. What a great followup to the first one! For those of you who have only seen the movie and not read the book, warning: the movie script cuts quite a bit out, and changes quite a bit. For instance, the whole lesbian thing in the movie? Never happened. The "other woman" who Bridget thought was after Mark really was after Mark in the book. Daniel Cleaver barely makes an appearance, just a brief few times, literally only 3 bri More...

The great thing about this book is that it completely preserved the tone, voice, characterizations, and humor of the first Bridget Jones book. It is easy to read but not dumbed-down. In fact, the nearly telegraphic style makes the reader work just a bit harder than she is used to, in order to divine the meaning. So that's all good. Why, then, have I given this sequel only three stars, where the first book received five?

It is unusual for a sequel to equal--far less rival or surpass--an original piece of fiction and yet here, in my opinion, Fielding succeeds on both ends.
As hysterically funny and original a novel Bridget Jones was, the continuation of Bridget's story--her search for love as a symbol of her post-feminist, post-modern search for herself--in 'The Edge of Reason' is actually more poignant, the writer's voice--and therefore, Bridget's voice--with greater depth. Perhaps what happens is that generally, More...

Oh my God! How funny can Helen Fielding get!!?? Bridget is in top form, embarrassing herself all the time and making way for some great moments. I laughed out loud, something I NEVER do, when I read the Colin Firth interview! I'm a journalist myself and so I could relate absolutely well to whatever Bridget was fumbling about and messing.

I'd really give this 3 and a half stars, but it's not quite worthy of a four. I have to say I enjoyed the first one better, but this is a fair sequel. It definitely made me laugh out loud. Her and Mark Darcy's interactions are priceless. And Bridget is just such a ridiculous character. I guess I just found the plot a little... lackluster? I understood the allusions to Persuasion and appreciated them, but I liked the allusions to Pride and Prejudice in Bridget Jones' Diary better. Perhaps because More...

After not liking much the first one, I see no reason for which I laughed so hard at 'The Edge of Reason'.
I mean yes:
- this one is clearly more eventful
- as time passes an author is becoming increasingly better (supposedly)
TO BE CONTINUED (maintenant gotta watch the movie)
Dar NU, n More...

Makes me laugh out loud to the point of stomach-ache every time I read it. Also many elements of the plot are lovingly borrowed from Austen's Persuasion which allows me to feel wise and well-read. ("Ah yes! Here Fielding is cleverly echoing Louisa Musgrove's accident at Lyme Regis!" etc. etc.) Although it must be said that Bridget is a far more appealing heroine than Anne Elliot, who, let's be real, is a maudlin and manipulative wretch.
I do wonder why this book is dismissed as chick lit when Lu More...

GOOD THINGS: I didn't read the first book but, I find this one quite funny. Esp. the interview with Colin Firth ( if it was me I would having jumping up and down in happiness and ask even sillier questions :p ). I love Mark Darcy too, he seems to be the perfect guy that every girl want to have, not just Bridget or Rebecca.
BAD THINGS: I don't know what everyone else think but, the further the story goes, the more I think that BRIDGET IS MENTAL. Say Rebecca is a total cow, but really, she actuall More...

So, I have not read the first book in the series which is probably why I read the entire book in Renee Zellweger's voice, in my head, of course. Now, that part with the intonations was v.g. (You'll get it if you've read the book or at least seen the movie)
But the book itself was far from V.G.
While Bridget herself seems to be an endearing character who does have the penchant to get into the weirdest of spots and scrapes, the plot just seemed too ludicrous to be even remotely believable. Now, I a More...

The continuing story of Bridget Jones and her diary saga was not really enticing as the first. There were moments when I had to literary drag myself to read about her moans and groans and whinnies... No woman whines so much as Bridget in my opinion. She got a perfectly good man and then her insecurities gets the better of her, namely Rebecca. She nearly gets raped by her previous boyfriend / boss, Daniel and ends up in a Thai jail for drug possession. This part of the book resembled so much the More...

It took me so long time to finish the book because I hated it. Totally and absolutely HATED it. Wanted to dispose of the book midway but convinced myself to go through it because I had flicker of hope that it might get better. But alas, I was so wrong. Bridget Jones must be one of the shallowest, most superficial characters I ever came across. One CANNOT have her life centered around losing weight and indulging in self pity for the simple reason that one has no boyfriend. Seriously, on nearly ev More...

This is probably the one rare time I'd say that a book's sequel is much better than its predecessor.
In this continuation of her diary, Bridget again recounts the ups and downs of the single life, coupled by the indifference shown to her by Mark Darcy, her now established boyfriend. "Hurrah! The wilderness years are now over. For four weeks and five days now have been in functional relationship with adult male, thereby proving am not love pariah as recently feared." Add to Darcy's indifference More...

The first half of this, I was really enjoying, wondering why I had such a dim recollection of it all. Then the second half goes bonkers, loses all the fun, and becomes, well...weird. I don't know if it's that it hasn't aged well, or if it's just not funny, or if it's not only not funny but uncomfortable, or if it's plain dull, but I found myself really wanting to just 'get through' reading it. Never a pleasant feeling to have, especially when I'm sure it ought to be better than I remember. Alas, More...

I had read this years ago, but I needed some auditory distraction for a long drive a couple of weeks ago, and it was one of the books on cd that happened to be available at the library. I'm not a huge fan of books on tape, but I thought this lent itself really well to the medium.
For a while near the middle of the book, I had the smug [married!] idea that I might have achieved great maturity since reading it before, since I found myself rather impatient with poor airhead Bridget's neurotic, scatt More...

I didn't think I would enjoy this sequel as even though I liked the first one. After a few months since I finished reading it, it wasn't memorable as I forgot what made it so funny. That being said, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason was easy to read, relatable and genuinely funny. I actually laughed out loud more than once when I was reading the book - a true sentiment of an enjoyable story.
