I read this as soon as it came out. I loved the first book, but was massively disappointed in this.
To clarify, I know a lot of disparaging things have been said about "chick-lit". Some is good, some is bad. Just like mysteries, sci-fi and pretty much every other genre. The first Bridget Jones book was great - witty, clever, and just the right amount of ridiculous mixed with reality. There was character progression and plot.

Not quite as good as the original, nonetheless, spending more time with Bridget and her friends as they count alcohol units and worry about what underpants to wear on a date is a pleasant diversion.

Bridget Jones and her wacky adventures do not contain themselves! Peeking into her diary is like a bath in whipped cream bubbles - exotic, a bit decadent and quite delicious!

The Colin Firth interview is hilarious! You just want to scream at Bridget to shut up and stop putting her foot in every time she opens her mouth! Just as wonderful as the first book!

honestly, i don't even remember reading this. i suspect it was structured in a faux diary format with lots of, "i'm fat. oops, i smoked acarton of cigarettes on my lunch break. why am i such an insufferable lush," asides. i don't find either of the bridge jones books (& yeah, i read the first one in 1998 during the kind of bout with ennui & a desire for mindless entertainment that always inspires my forays into chick lit) very smart. i keep a diary &...it's nothing like thi...more

How I Came To Read This Book: I borrowed it from Robyn.
The Plot: Bridget Jones is back (just a mere month or so after the first book ends) and seemingly happy now that her and Mark Darcy are all lovey-dovey. Things start to crumble in dear Bridge's life however, when his coworker Rebecca sticks her nose into Mark & Bridget's relationship, wrenching them apart. Bridget, in between wine and chocolate binges, is busy however with other pressing manners including her best friend's wedding (t...more

While I was reading this book I either a) had this goofy smile on my face or b) was laughing out loud. This was the funniest book I have ever read! I read the first book and to be honest thought it was just alright, but I loved the first movie. Saw the second movie and thought it was alright, but loved the second book. I think if the movie had left out all that Daniel drama and the girl from Darcy's law office and put in more of the Rebecca drama, crazy parents and friends stories, and more of Da...more

So, now I've read the first Bridget Jones book and I'm on to this book. I think I may like this one more. I *have* been laughing out loud this time. I'm beginning to feel affectionate about Shazzer and the girls. I like that Bridget's getting her life a little more in line. And I enjoyed the dash of politics in discussing Tony Blair's election. Suddenly between this book and the recent film The Queen I have a general idea about his role in history. Handy side benefit. I think with a sequel like ...more

I liked this book about as much as the first one, though this one was a lot more different from the movie than the first one was.
Like in the first one, I found myself constantly criticizing Bridget for everything I see wrong with her—her lack of self-esteem, her inability to see the consequences of her actions, and her continual tardiness. I mean, I'm a continually tardy person myself, but I wouldn't do something stupid like go out shopping when my plane is due to leave in a few hours. Tha...more

Oh, my goodness. If Helen Fielding's books get any better, I am going to have to go back in and adjust my grade curve. I could not have enjoyed this book more.
This is one I read in the tub. And on the lawn, lolling in the sun. And also in the car (not while driving.) I just read it til I was done, and I laughed quite a bit.
Haven't watched the poorly-reviewed movie based on it, but I can't imagine Renee Zellweger really selling this material.

Ok, I know what you are thinking - sequels are never as good as the first one, the real thing. But sometimes they come close. Here, Bridget is still our adorable, disorganized, imaginative Bridget, the same one we left at the end of Bidger Jones' Diary. At the beginning of the book, she's offically Mark Darcy's girlfriend, so she is feeling much more at peace with herself. But things change, and you will be surprised of how fast her (funny, but still usual, pretty close to boring) life becomes a...more

anyone who loved Bridget Jones Diary, all young urban singletons
Just as good as the first Bridget Jones book, if not better, because of where she ends up at the end (I don't want to spoil it for you). The parts in which Bridget lands herself in a Thai prison are inspirational enough to stand on their own as self-help mini lessons, parallel to Bridget's own love for self-help books. The antics of her parents are extra delightful and more ridiculous than in the first book, and also come to a happy resolution.

I know- I'm officially lame. Whatever. It's good.
Aside: I was once sitting outside at a restaurant with a glass of wine and a book, when I got into a conversation with a couple sitting at the next table. After a few minutes of idle chat, the guy asked me what I was reading. I turned bright red, flipped the book over, and made some kind of weirdo apology because I was reading a Patricia Cornwell crime novel. I'm pretty sure I even said something very close to, "I usually have someth...more

I confess to being disappointed with BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY when I read it in college; Bridget was very silly, I thought, and I wished the romance was better developed. I read this one when I was a twentysomething in publishing and New York and found it immensely more satisfying -- partly because I had more life experiences like Bridget's (having become a little silly myself), and partly because this IS a better-developed romance (it's based on PERSUASION), plus all the madcap mix-ups of the firs...more

Seeing as the first Bridget Jones is one of the very few chick-lit books I have read, this is pretty much the one other piece of chick-lit that I have to compare it with. I've always thought it a little unfair to rate a book as it's compared to a predescessor or others in a series ... but seeing as that's all I've got to go on ... I have to say that this one is not nearly as good as the first. As if the author was simply seeking to cash in on the success of the first book and forgot to write a r...more

Excerpts from my readers response notebook back in 2004 before the movie premiered in theatres
early on in my reading...
I couldn't believe that Bridget's mom brought an African back with her. What was she thinking?!?! You can't trapse back to England with an African like he's a souvenir.
I'm wondering how politically correct this movie will be. Will Bridget's mom use phrases like "THE African" or "homo"? I think the book is funny overall, but there were tim...more
