I generally enjoyed Acevedo's first feliz Gomez book, Nymphos of Rocky Flats, but I really enjoyed this follow up.

In this adventure, Felix finds his way around the seedy world of the porn industry, and learns how closely connected it is to both the mob and the political establishment. I could not help to wonder if the author may have some first-hand experience in the field. He is very attractive now, so I have no doubt he would have been able to make a living at it when he was younger. But I deg...more

X-Rated Bloodsuckers is completely forgettable. The 2nd installment of the Felix Gomez series follows the same pattern of good pacing paired with a lack of characterization and complicated plot with a slapdash ending. On the plus side, I read the first book in the series (Nymphos of Rocky Flats) and thus was not expecting much from this book to begin with, so I can't say I was especially disappointed. Fortunately, I borrowed this from a friend rather than pay full price, and recommend you do the...more

There is nothing quite like mixing vampires and porn. Better than Twilight? Yes. More obvious than Anne Rice? Absolutely. A little bit sexier than Sookie and her adventures? Not really. The fact remains that Marios Acevedo does some very interesting things with vampires, but sometimes misses the mark, especially when it comes to sex and vamps. I was expecting, as I should have been with a title like "X-Rated Bloodsuckers", to read about some real x-rated shit, well, this is not the case. I was h...more

The client’s name is Katz Meow, an L.A. porn actress (how perfect). His name is Felix Gomez, a private detective, ex-military, Hispanic, Vampire. His services have been retained for $100,000 (cash) to solve the murder of Ms. Meow’s co-worker Roxy Bronze.

This is the follow up to Acevedo’s first novel ‘The Nymphos of Rocky Flats.’ Like I said concerning that book, the title is most titillating part and as far as this one goes the title is the most x-rated thing about it (sort of). I actually don’...more

Like all of his books it was a little confusing. There are terms in there I don't understand until I've seen them a few times in context, and the constant "I hung a left here, then went here and passed here" got annoying. But the story overall was brilliant.
Felix Gomez is a thoroughly interesting character, and not only did this have the fantasy elements of him being a vampire there is also the main focus that this is a crime novel, with Felix as PI, but there was also a romantic element, which...more

The completist in me (it can't be the optimist, I'm not that optimistic) wanted to give this book a try after the first one failed to impress. But...this one pretty much had the same effect. This isn't in any way reflection on Acevedo's literary abilities, he is a capable writer and I understand that a vampire PI series is what sells nowadays and hence is what he writes and while he probably does this better than most out there, I just couldn't bring myself to care about this book, plot of chara...more

I read this book a few years ago and would certainly categorize this in the fluff section of my shelves. You can't take a book with a title such as this too seriously, and that is the right approach for this novel. The book totes plenty of action... vampires + porn = ?.

Let me explain this one another way, I have a qualification for movies when a flick falls into a category where they become "good" bad movies. There is no doubt that what you are watching is bad, but you can't help but feel entert...more

Felix Gomez is a vampire PI who takes on the case of a murdered porn star. With such an enteraining description on the dust jacket I expected to be instantly engrossed. Unfortunately, the plot ticked along with metronome proficiency. New suspect. New motive. New clue. New suspect. New motive. New clue. Add love interest.

I think the series has a lot of potential, but needs more character development. Felix Gomez just wasn't interesting enough to be carrying a series like this.

I won't be reading t...more

X-Rated Bloodsuckers is the second Felix Gomez mystery in the series by Mario Acevedo, and I honestly enjoyed it as much as I did the first book, The Nymphos of Rocky Flats.

Felix is an Iraqi War veteran turned vampire turned supernatural shamus. (Down these mean streets an UNDEAD man must go.) Based out of Colorado, Felix returns to his native L.A. after being hired by a porn actress to investigate the murder of fellow adult film star, Roxy Bronze.

Even without its supernatural bent, X-Rated Blo...more

Katz Meow hires vampire private investigator Felix Gomez to investigate the death of fellow porn star, Roxy Bronze. Once Felix informs the Araneum (the vampire council) of the nefarious goings on of the LA vampires, they authorize Felix to infiltrate, find the missing Araneum agents and destroy the nest. Of course it's not that easy. There are many many conspiracies involving politicians, preachers, realtors, surgeons and even a non-profit organization at the heart of it all. Feliz has to dig th...more

Interestingly....I agree with most of the other readers comments here. I liked this book less, but more, than the first one...I would really like to see Acevedo do a lot more with character development, there just really isn't any passion with this, it's very generic. There's nothing really unique or special about Felix Gomez, it's more like he's exactly the same thing as every other person walking around, except that he likes to drink blood. He is definitely not the kind of vampire that affecti...more

This is the second book in the Felix Gomez series, but for some reason, I didn't find it quite as entertaining as the first. A lot of the ridiculousness of some of the situations, that I found so amusing in the first book were missing from this second book.

In similar vein to book 1, Felix Gomez, still a private eye, has now been called to Los Angeles to investigate the death of porn star Roxy Bronze. Upon arriving in LA however, he finds that the person who visited his office only the day before...more

Much, much, much better than its predecessor. The basic storyline is just as minimal as in Nymphos (someone killed a porn star and our hero goes to LA to investigate), the side story is more interesting than Nymphos (Vamps in LA might be about to break silence and no one knows why), and the character story is fabulous.

The real story here is Carlos joining up with the down-at-the-heels, universally disliked-but-tolerated, and proudly barrio-living Hispanic vampire Coyote. Coyote loudly and frequ...more

I went into the book expecting it to be sexy; it is not.

I wasn't sure what else to expect, but all you need to know is in the first page. The style with which this was written and some aspects of the plot made me quite literally laugh out loud at its unusualness and attempt at drama (comically overdramatic and farfetched was the result). Now you might say, "It's a book about vampires; what did you expect?". I am aware that it's about vampires but there are standards (this coming from a lover of...more

Reading the series backwards. It's steadily getting worse. Unsympathetic characters all around, a paper thin plot, mostly stilted dialog (occasionally funny--I'd give it 1 1/2 stars for Felix's rare good liners), little of interest vampire or magic wise (Pretty much Felix's only investigative tool is to hypnotise humans, and occasionally leave order them into trite embarrassing situations for when they wake up).

Good thing I only paid half-price for this, at the used bookstore. It was still too...more

I never really got into this book. To use a cliche, I wasn't feeling it. Something about the mythology seemed off to me. I've never liked my vampires outside during the day, so that's probably part of it. Also, this is really just a mystery story with the vampires thrown in to spice things up.

But here's my major complaint: Gomez doesn't really do anything to solve the mystery. He drives around and talks to people but finds only more questions. All the major breaks come as a result of chance and...more

Awful! The author tried to jazz this tired old detective story up with vampires and porn stars but it still read as predictable and dull as a cozy mystery with grandma & her cats or knitting or whatever other crap old fart slueths have. The character of Coyote was supposed to be funny, I am assuming, but he mostly get made me feel like I had come in contact with a hobo pedophile. You know what they say about ASSuming. I do feel like an ass for wasting my time with this junk.

Fun read to pass a weekend. The characters are entertaining and adequate description is given for proper visualization. Little glimpses given into the vampire culture will hopefully be better brought to life in future books. This book was a decent follow up to The Nymphos of Rocky Flats. I will continue reading these books, we all need some guilty pleasures and the occasional easy read.

The book was a quick read, and I didn't read the first in the series, but it was easy to understand what was going on. I can see this not being everyone's thing, but I liked the characterization of Felix, as well as the characters around him. There was definitely some weakness to the book, but I think it's a promising series.

My uncle recommended this to me because it was funny. So I gave it a try while on vacation. It was funny, clever and entertaining, plus it had a fairly good mystery.

The title is really not totally related to the novel and more for shock value, and I could understand how it might turn some people away.

Quick read. And I can't wait to read the other too, I like Felix.

The author of this title is an RMFW member. For that reason, we do not rate these selections. We’re kind of biased. However, it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t have them on our shelves. And you’ll see this message on any other titles that come from our members. We do hope that you’ll consider reading it, though. ;)

Felix Gomez is a vampire PI who winds up in strange situations, or at least that is what was established in book one. Book two was just as strange and funny.

You'd think by the titles of these books that they would be Xrated but honestly there isn't anything like that in there; just a whole lot of funny.

This was a fairly entertaining book. The author is a smarta$$, which is a good thing, but he would appear to take himself too seriously at other times (plus it ruins the general smartypants nature of the book). So, overall, good, but not stellar. Not sure I'll read any of the others in the series.

Sequil to Nymphos Of Rocky Flats, the continuing saga of a vampire PI. The hero has worked through his angst of the first book. Lots of action, interesting cast of characters, and the plot wraps up nicely without much help from the hero. Good reading but not a keeper.

The first time he referred to his Kundalini noir I should have thrown the book across the room. I didn't so I had to endure the vampire coffee, with blood. The last straw for me was when a vampire turn into a werewolf.

I won't finish this.

Of course a book written by a MALE author is centered around the porn industry and is full of cliches. The only reason I finished this was because I needed an "X" for my A-Z title challenge. Then I realized I paid $9.99 for this book. OMG Just shoot me!
Dolores
If you judge a book by its cover, this one would have won the I won't read award. However, this is a delightful vampire book that is focused on Los Angeles. Absolutely geared to walk the native through local haunts and new ideas. Good summer read.

I'll check out his next book. It wasn't as good as The Nymphos of Rocky Flats but it provided a good PI noir vibe as well as a look into the vampire mythos Acevedo creates.
John Hart
A clear improvement over the first novel, with more details on the structure and culture of the supernatural world. The Publisher's Weekly review of it on Amazon.com was dead-on.
