This is the first book in the Yellow Rose Mystery series. Abby is described as being "out of school, out of work, and out of motivation."
When the book opens, her gardener Ben approaches Abby and tells her that he needs to tell her and her sister Kate (her fraternal twin) something, but he wants to wait until Kate comes home so he'll only have to tell the story once. He seems really nervous and agitated, but Abby can't convince him to spill the beans early.

I found this to be a delightful summer read! It was fast moving, interesting and entertaining with a cast of characters that fit right into the story and plot line well. I enjoyed the one twin's pet cat and the other twin's pet dog and how they got along so well with each other as twin sisters! The ending surprised me---and, all families can't be perfect! I'm not sure why it's called a yellow rose mystery though --- there was a rose garden but don't believe anyone specifically said anything abou...more
The great thing about cozies is that there is a sub genre to fit all tastes. This was not to my taste. I was easily distracted from reading except for a few episodes near the end. My mind would wander in the middle of a sentence. And the outcome was pretty much predictable (not a negative in and of itself, but in this case I figured out who the bad person was pretty quickly). And the plot device at the denouement was also predictable for the location.
I had no sense of the place. Galveston should...more

If you enjoy cozy mysteries, read this book and make up your own mind. It's worth the read, it is an easy, quick, read and entertaining.
The thing that stood out most in my mind when reading the book, the wrap up of the loose ends were drawn out too far after the reveal. It was late when I finished the book and maybe that was why I kept thinking, how could there be this many pages left when we know who did it! I would have held off on the reveal until some of the other discovery was made, but I...more

From the first sentence about how the sun could melt diamonds, I enjoyed her colorful expressions and vivid similes. The relationship between the two sisters, so different though they were twins, provided warmth and grounding to Abby's restless, impulsive nature. Didn't matter what crazy chances Abby took, Kate and Terry had her back. Fortunately, her love interest was a policeman who could make nasty consequences of her investigation go away. The fast-paced action kept me reading all night-some...more
Hmm. I don't know why but I never really got into this one.
The mystery was pretty good. It kind of a snowball gathering speed down a hill or a Dung Beetle gathering dung. It started off with the death of the gardner and then slowly built by adding connections to the other characters and events. I kind of liked the way she the mystery grew,
I did not mind Abby. She was kind of an interesting character. She was spitfire. Noone was going to piss in her boots and call it rainwater! Although I liked...more

Maybe 3.5 stars since I didn't know who the killer was til near the end, but why, oh, why do all the heroes/heroines of mystery books (amateur ones at least) need to go off alone, when they KNOW who the guilty party is and then get nearly killed themselves???? I think I really do need to go back to reading some Agatha Christie mysteries again since her detectives never did that. IIRC
3.55 - 3.62
The main character is a different sort than the rest of the ones out there in the cozy world. She's rich, computer smart (although I would like to see more of this), adopted and smart enough to know when to hide.
Yes, she suffers from going into places she shouldn't without proper backup but she handles herself quite well and very rarely needs that much help. Her skill of having little shame to get what she wants helps.

I have managed to read most of this series out of order. Each book, however, is a great read independently. This was the 'first' and certainly sets up the series. I found it interesting, compelling, and also an easy book to read. It held my attention and now has me reading the 4th in the series, (or at least I think it is.) A great Author. A great book!
I thought this book to be a great collection to my cozy book collection. I really enjoyed Abby(she is not your typical corny girl with no brains)There is a few curse words thrown in and mention of sex, which don't make for your typical cozy. I highly recommend this series due to the interesting recurring characters and the little bit of edge!
Pick Your Poison by Leann Sweeney is an action-packed cozy mystery that held my interest from beginning to end. The main character, Abby, is a smart, brave, & strong woman who sets out to investigate the death of her gardener. The investigation turns dangerous as more secrets are revealed along the way. Abby gets a little help along the way by a detective named Jeff. A very enjoyable story!
"Oh what a tangled web you weave, when first you practice to deceive."
This is a very good first mystery. The main character, Abby, finds her gardener dead shortly before he can reveal information to Abby and her sister. Abby sets out to uncover the mystery of his life and finds a weave of deception that leads back to her family. The trail goes back 30 years to a disappearance and deception. There are plenty of suspects as the story twists and turns with a final twist at the end that I did not se...more

Female fraternal, but adopted, twins have inherited their fathers company, house and problems. Sadly he had died before explaining the problems then the gardener who was the only other in on the secret is murdered.
Several layers of interactions and several good characters make this a readable mystery.

I wavered between 2 and 3 stars due to my exasperation with the main character's behavior. Authors, please come up with a way to advance the story that doesn't involve having the protagonist do unbelievably stupid things (unless you're writing comedy, in which case it better be really, really funny).
This series was recommended to me by a friend. This is the first book in the series and it is average. There is some funny dialogue and the plot is slightly above average in sophistication, but the author's use of cliches is annoying most of the time. All that said, I will continue to read the rest of the books in the series. Though, that is more of a personality quirk than a positive attribution to the books.

Great first book in the series. Abby Rose, an adopted heiress, starts investigating in order to discover the truth about her and her twin sister's, Kate, biological parents, after the death of her adoptive father, Charlie Rose and the murder of Ben, their gardener. The story included plenty of twists and turns and the revelation of the killer's identity was a shock. Leann Sweeney certainly knows how to craft a good mystery and keep her readers alert, turning page after page.I plan to read the re...more
