This 5th volume covers a very short time period in LDS church history. The saints had just been forced to leave Missouri or face more brutal atacks. The Governer had issued the "extermination order" and they were forced at gun point to leave everything they had. They settled in Illinois and soon founded the beautiful city of Nauvoo from what was once only a swamp.

This is my favorite volume of the series. I adore this series because the characters are deep and the historical events so powerful.

I was very impressed with this book. Being a member of the Church and getting a greater understanding of those early events of the oppression that the early saints had to go through, but the time period that followed that really was a season of joy for the Saints, was really wonderful for me to read.
But as this book is a historical fiction novel, I also felt myself being overcome with emotion as I read the happy times that happened with the Steed family, especially towards the end of the bo...more

This entire series is wonderful. It takes a fictional family and places them in the middle of the story of the Mormons (the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) and moves them through the early history of the LDS Church tell the story of the growth of the church as well as the growth of the Steed Family. I learned a lot and it put a lot of things into context for me as well. For example after reading several books one of the members of the Steed Family who was Wealthy bought a new and wo...more

I read the first book when it first came out. (I was a teenager) I stayed up all night reading. I loved it. Then I went on to read 2-4 and somewhere became bored. So until recently I decided to try the 5th book. (I actually listened to it on tape while I scrapbooked, cleaned, etc...) Maybe that is why I liked it. This book reunites all of the family members. It is usually predictable what is going to happen. Everything always seems so good. Although I'm curious to see if the author wi...more

I liked it. This book included the sicknesses and some trials of the saints. Also the missions to england. It left me happy and uplifted like all the work and the glory books do. But this one seemed to have a little less spirirtual insight and a more fictional storyline. No really big climax, but overall I enjoyed it. The main message is that you can have a happy and joyful life, but when you have the gospel there is true real joy. It was good, a little fluffy but fun to read!

I loved this series!! It was so good. I couldn't put them down! I can't pick a favorite book because I thought they were all good. The story was interesting and it kept having drama which made it fun to read because you wanted to know what happened. The only bad thing about the book was that it was so historically accurate some people think this family is real.

I read the series while I worked during the summer break of college. It was really a good time for me to read these because I worked at hotels at night and I needed a comforting book to read. Although there was a lot of conflict in these books, I loved the story of the families and their love and the overal theme. I loved these books!

This is a great book. It tells of the Saints starting to settle in Nauvoo. I find all of the books in this series so hard to put down. These books are not hard to read, even though they look like they could be used to build a brick wall with. Do not be intimidated by the size of a book!

This 5th book finds the Steeds in a happy period in their lives for once. The historical facts behind the rise of Nauvoo are very interesting and I really enjoy the addition of Will Steed back to the story. He is one of my favorite characters in the whole series.

This was a joy to read and a bit of a balm to my heart after the agonies of four. Six is coming but I'm not in any hurry for this one; I know what's coming and as well as Lund paints a picture; killing Joseph is not a picture I am anxious to "see".

This is a great book and a great continuation to a great series. In this book things get a little calmer after considering they have now left Missouri but the churxch still has it's problems and we experiance them as we go through this book.

I loved all of these books! It helped me to learn about church history in an entertaining and yet spiritual way. I love how the author put the dates and references at the end so I can look it up separately if I desire to do so.

I'm not big into this series, but I keep thinking that I SHOULD finish it. But, after reading this one I think I'm done. I like the books' historical information - but they seem so cheesy. I'm just not into them.

I really enjoyed this one! I have enjoyed them all thus far but this one was fun to read. The saints went through so much but he does a good job at also showing how happy they were despite all their trials.

I loved this series. It was hard to put down the books because you wanted to know what happened next so badly. The characters were so real, and it made church history stand out for me.

I read this entire series and really loved the books. It's a great way to learn real church history in fictional story form. The books follow one family through church history.

As much as I enjoyed reading this, I'm afraid college caught up with me and I was engulfed with other exciting genres to peruse. I didn't finish this series. Hopefully, I will someday.

If you liked 1 through 4, of course you'll like 5. If a book can make me cry spontaneously from happiness and sadness at the same time, I consider it worthy of a 4.

This was a very heart warming book. Like the rest of them the historical facts are wonderful. Not only is it a great read, but I am learning a lot about church history.
