My favorite CS Friedman book, by a mile. Centuries of interstellar war between two genetically engineered super-races of humans comes to a crux in a personal vendetta between two warriors. It's engrossing, richly drawn... and compelling because it's asking us to question our own motivations and how they can be intertwined and hidden to us. Appeals immensely to those who favors strong heroines. A strong book about strong people with some excellently thrilling twists.

Friedman builds a portrait of two cultures in perpetual war and two extraordinary nemeses born of them. Characters are introduced and discarded by the dozens to fill in aspects of the culture; all building to two face-to-face meetings.

The cultures were interesting as thought experiments and analogies to our world but not much else. The characters were … there. I never engaged with either Zatar or Anzha (the nemeses) and really thought they should get over themselves. Actually I thought the...more

One of my favs! Large scale, futuristic, very interesting social commentary, if you care to get into it but if you don't it is still a fun read.

I bought this because I noticed the sequel at Queen Anne Books and didn’t want to read the sequel without reading the first book – which was written something like 17 years earlier. I got through it slowly because it is not a book that I could read in snatches. Wonderful writing and characterization, and even though I knew how the story was going to end, I still wanted to read all the sideways and byways that will get me there.

I wouldn't have given this book a second glance if a good friend hadn't recommended it to me, as pulp sci-fi didn't do much for me other than a brief period during my mid teens.

This book is beyond-a-doubt the best the genre has to offer. It's a shame current editions have the cheesy "yet another sci-fi book" cover art, because this is so much more than that.

The cover summary for In Conquest Born made it seem like a dry, technical scifi novel, so I figured I wouldn't like it. The book sat on my shelf for ages, but after reading promising reviews on Amazon I thought again that I'd give it a try. I brought it along on a trip, and found it very difficult to put down!

This is the book that actually got me interested in SciFi. It is a well written and thought out Space Opera. Until I read this I was mainly a fantasy wizards and dwarves kinda guy.

I just couldn't get past the first few chapters. It read like Iain Banks at his worst: psychotic, throwaway characters obsessed with war and rape. No thanks.

a re-reading in preparation for The Wilding, and just to refresh my memory. A little hard core space opera is good every now and then

I liked this book until the end. Thought the ending was terrible. Plot was good and dark.

Well written, thought provoking. One of my favorites. Beware, however, it's very dark.

Always worth a reread, and doubly so after the disappointment that was The Wilding.
