those who like their horror on a slow burn
This movie was quite unsettling when I saw it back on the 70s. But despite having seen the film, it did not take away from the enjoyment of the novel. Most people would probably have given this one a pass if they had known that Tryon was an actor before he wrote this, but this guy was (he died of cancer in 1991) some fine writer. The movie was very true to the novel, so there will be no surprises with the dreadful turns that both the novel and movie follow.
But like I said, it's still a fine re...more

I still remember the first time I ever saw this movie. It was in the early '70's, I was up late at night all alone and I was soooo scared that I could barely move! The book is even better! This is a first-rate book about a creepy, twisted, evil child and his twin brother. There is a great twist to the story that will floor you. I still can't look at a Price Albert can without shuddering! A definate must-read for any horror fan.

Simply the most disturbing, darkest tale ever. The movie version was actually done quite well. I'll never forget the tagline; "Holland...where is the baby?". *shudder* Truly a horror story worthy of praise. No gore, no uber violence-a macabre journey to discover what is real, and what is imagined. You'll have nightmares for a long time after reading this book-if you can find a copy.

I read this book in high school and could not believe how much I liked it. I was never a big reader but I remember my awe and amazement over the twists in the plot and the ending. This is a very dark book though and also somewhat sad. Also, to anyone who has read this, please listen to the Pearl Jam song, "Nothingman" and let me know what you think.

This is one of those rare books that I can honestly say of: "I did not see that coming!" Wow. Hopefully, you've never seen the (excellent) 1972 film of this book or that will take the surprise out of it. By the way, Tom Tryon played the alien/husband in the classic 1959 "B" movie, I Married a Monster from Outer Space!

This is a very well written book about two brothers growing up in a northeast state during the early 20th century. It starts out as a very innocent story, but gradually becomes much more sinister and puzzling. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good, thrilling read with some interesting twists to it.

What promise Tryon exhibited in this first novel, here is a horror writer of the first class and a tale of twins born on different days.
For those who thought Stephen King was a great horror writer, look for a used copy of this pre-King era frightmare and crawl under the covers.

Although I read this story years ago, it has stuck in my mind. I recently found a copy at a used book store and plan to reread it some day. It's one of those plots where you're absolutely knocked out with a surprise on the last page.

this is one of my favorite books...if you have not read thomas tryon you are missing out on a true horror master... twins are the focus of the story... one is evil...one is not... psychologically horrifying... dark and disturbing book

This book is like the Virgina Wolf of psychological thriller books. Each part starts off in first person. At first I didn't think the book was that distrubing but by the end I did and couldn't sleep. It is a good book but be warned.

Unless you've seen the movie, you are in for a surprise. I can't say that about a lot of books (or movies for that matter). Clever and suspenseful. Not terribly long, a good traveling read for its entertainment factor.

I read this creepy story as a teen. It was about a boy and his grandmother and a secret about his twin. The book is actually based on the movie screen play (1972).

I have a hardcover of this book in an old edition in Spanish. I was drawn to it, probably because the story is quite different if you're a twin.

I don't read a lot of horror, but this one is creepy because of all the creepy twists and turns. It'll keep you reading. Well done.
One of the best thriller horror books I have read. We lost a big talent when Thomas Tryon died.

Books you remember this long have to be good. I'm going to read this macabre tale again someday.
