The first page had most of the 7 famous words, driving while drinking, and the phrase "yellow puddle formed around my groin". I really do not think this is a youth book! The curse words got worse from there, and graphic underage sex was also included. The obese werewolf, describes the fatty woman's butt. as it jiggles--like the last time he disemboweled someone--lovely. Just what we want to teach teens today to think about large people--new insults!

Loved Loved Loved this book!
I am a big fan of campy fun novels. Books that make the unbelievable seem like, yeah.. ohkay... that could happen.
Meet two unlikely best friends: Earl (a vampire) and Duke (a werewolf). Throw in an all nite diner run by a very large, very spunky Lorreta. Sprinkle in a teenage wanna-be mistress of the old gods, a few ghosts, and a ton of zombies/ghouls and slimy, tentacled, oozing things, and you have yourself one helluva kick ass novel!

Fun mix of horror and humor, featuring a vampire with a bad comb-over, a werewolf with a massive gut and a nubile teenage vixen trying to bring a facsimile of Lovecraft's Elder Gods to earth.

Fun, cute, light read. I'll definitely be checking out more of Martinez's stuff now that I'm out of Christopher Moore books.

Whizzed thru this debut (?) novel in about 3 chunks since Sunday.
Duke, an overweight, ex-trucker werewolf, and Earl, a balding vampire stop at an out-of-the way diner and find themselves helping the proprietor, a blowsy waitress named Loretta, fend off a zombie attack. They decide to stick around to find out exactly what is going on in this small desert town. Weird things have been happening in the town of Rockwood for decades (Earl and Duke don't raise many eyebrows) but they appear to have ...more

This is a florid little beach read that hit it off a lot more successfully with my friends than it did with me. It's decidedly light for something that deals with blood-thirsty cult-of-personality figures, chthonic entities and a vampire-werewolf team up.
It all centers around Earl and Duke, a Vampire and Werewolf respectively. They, as supernatural entities, tend to draw a lot of freakish happenstances down on them simply by being, and as a result they're not surprised to find that the greas...more

This is not normally the kind of book I read, but something about the blurb on the back caught my attention and I picked it up. I'm glad I did, it was a really great story. I love the main characters so much I wish there would be a series based on this. Duke, a werewolf, and Earl, a vampire, get on each other's nerves a bit but you can tell they care about each other. They stop by a roadside diner late one night and find that there are frequent zombie attacks at the establishment, so they wi...more

A werewolf and a vampire walk into a bar...ok, actually it was a diner. Under the truism of "weird shit attracts weird shit", Duke (werewolf) and Earl (vampire) soon find the diner under attack by zombies. Ee gad!
It's funny, a little cliche in spots, but overall not a bad little book. Interestingly, the character of Hector (and what is up with that name coming up so much in the last few years after a millenia of disuse??) is only mentioned and spoken to on the phone briefly, b...more

I discovered this author while checking out another reader's blog. Martinez has a few books out that all look like fun and since this was his first one, I decided to start here. The story is a light-hearted horror tale in which our two heroes are a slovenly, overweight werewolf and a lovelorn vampire in overalls with a comb-over. Low on gas, they pull up to the titular diner and take on a job from the owner to help her with her current zombie problem. Throw in a jailbait sorceress, undead cattle...more

A. Lee Martinez is a bit like Christopher Moore, in that he takes ideas and filters them through a twisted blender of horror, fantasy, and most of all humor. Duke is a werewolf and Earl is a vampire, and they're both beer-swilling rednecks just minding their own business until they cross paths with a goth teen trying to use a roadside diner to summon a monster from the netherworld.

This is book is very interesting. It has many twists and turns. It is about a werewolf and a vampire who got hungry while on a road trip, they found a diner to stop by for a while and ran into a problem. The diner was constantly being attacked by mindless zombies. The owner offer them a price to help get rid of the zombies, but they found themselves fighting more than just zombies. The diner was a portal to summon the old gods and someone was trying to drive the owner out so they can summon the ...more

This book was a quick, fun read. I’m for comedy in my horror, and this fits the bill – the zombie cows and veddy articulate ghouls were a good touch – and although there is, of course, an Armageddon looming on the horizon, the person orchestrating the destruction is a nicely non-typical power-hungry magic user, while being an utterly typical 17-year-old girl in many ways.
Earl and Duke are played off each other well, and the inhabitants of the town are not SO quirky as to be annoying; ...more

I was looking for similar authors to one of my recent favorites (Christopher Moore) and A. Lee Martinez was suggested. I am glad that I read this.
I really enjoyed the story of Earl (the Vampire) and Duke (the Werewolf) and the banter between them throughout the story.
The pair stumble into a small town where a number of weird occurrences happen and where weirder things start to occur while they are there. In the end they end up saving the town as well as the entire world.

Unexpectedly entertaining. This book does not address any social issues, expand your vocabulary, or even really require you to think. Frankly, that's what I need sometimes.

A werewolf and a vampire are traveling buddies, driving across the country, drinking beer and trying to stay out of trouble. They walk into an old diner in the town of Rockwood and get involved in what might be the end of the world, unless they can stop it.
A fun little book. Not really laugh out loud funny, though I might have chuckled a few times, but it’s a an easy and amusing read.

Gil's is a satire of paranormal fiction- a pulp heaven and yes, not for the sensitive-natured. I would not recommend reading this after The Lovely Bones, or some such tender reflection. But if you are in a playful mood to explore small red-neck town meets Repo Man, this is your baby. It mocks the whole world of the paranormal occult with a Texas-sized chicken fried steak.

I picked this one up because it looked like a really schlocky B-movie-with-no-budget kind of thing, and, hey, that was what I was in the mood for at the time. Plot-wise that's kind of what it is, but I was absolutely amazed at how well written it was. I grew quite fond of the characters and really hoped that everything would work out well for them. As George Alec Effinger said, God's perfect meal is a cheeseburger with fries and a Coke; that what Gil's serves, with pecan pie for dessert.

Powell's books store signagerecommends it for: decent quick fun read
I might have enjoyed this fun--but not particularly satisfying or surprising--book more if I hadn't been told it was popular with readers of two of my favorite authors, Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. The book falls far short of both. Martinez is hardly the first writer to put vampires and werewolves in a modern setting--an extremely small town with a diner cursed by zombies, in this case. The book is short and cute but hops along towards a very predictable conclusion.

Another Powell's pick-up - this one had a staff review that likened the author to Jasper Fforde. I don't quite see that link, but both write very funny sci fi/fantasy. This book features a vampire and werewolf duo who help a diner owner deal with her otherworldly invaders. There are zombies, old gods, ghost dogs, teenage witches, and malevolent ooze. (I know - I'm a dork.) The book was fast-paced and funny - another great summer read!

Gil's All Fright Diner is definately not the best book out there, but sure is a ton of fun. Like many B horror flicks, it is humourous, crude and completely unbelieveable. Since when is powdered raven's eye available by mail order? I'd recommened it to anyone who enjoys campy horror, gratuitous cursing and zombie cows. It deserves 3.5 stars, but since that is not allowed, I have to go with 3.
