All of Ellroy' books I have read relate to corruption, and this one is no exception. It purports to be the memoir, written from his prison cell, of a serial killer called "Sexecutioner" by the media. Martin Plunkett is an extremely bright, insane individual. He completely baffles the school psychologists who try to bring him out of his self imposed shell; he rarely talks to anyone. During class he withdraws into movie screen images-- brain movies, he calls them, superimposing his class...more

My brother gave this book to me for Christmas, and to be honest, I was a little bit hesitant to start reading it. Not because I thought it would be bad. On the contrary, all of my siblings are creative, intelligent and insightful people, and I would trust any of their creative recommendations without a moment's hesitation. I just can't always promise that I'll like what they recommend. The last book my brother gave me was Narcissus and Goldmund by Her...more

I found nothing scary about the book. I was rather gruesome. Didn't float my boat.

goodreads..recommends it for: anyone interested in mystery or serial killers
I felt that this book was interesting and a little confusing. The plot line has a few twists and turns in it that keep you interested but at the same time have you saying "WTH?". The main character was rather interesting and you never quite figure out why he does what he does, but on the cover of the book it says its "the scariest book I've ever read" from some reviewer..I wouldnt go that far, it didnt keep me up at night or anything..

A much creepier version of Thompson's "The Killer Inside Me." Jonathan Kellerman blurbed "Killer on the Road" as the scariest book he's ever read, and I'm certainly hard-pressed to come up with anything scarier. Ellroy had me checking under my bed and in closets for hiding murderers. Eek.

Interesting concept - the modern serial killer is made possible by the automobile and highway - just not one of Ellroy's better books. And why should it be, when it was one of his earlier ones, too?

Tightly drawn characters battling for some crude sense of justice and sanity in a world where the world turns a deaf ear to depravity as long as it's on the side of the Law.

Ellroy's first novel is a serial killer horror novel, very hard hitting. Charles Manson is a character in the film, briefly
