Sherlock Holmes is one of the greatest literary figures of all time and after reading Doyle's first adventures of him, its easy to see why.
Starting with the first story, "A Study In Scarlet", where Holmes and Watson meet for the very first time and continuing with the next Holmes novel "Sign of the Four", this volume then goes on to include the first set of Doyle's short stories.

This book was pure Gold - it was impossible to put down, and its clear to see why its a classic. Watching Holmes apply his methods to each case and unravel it to the eternaly baffled Watson was entertaining and even inspiring. I only wish I was as smart as Sherlock. I actually think we can all learn a lot from Sherlock - even if he is fictional :)

I had never quite understood what all the to-do about Sherlock Holmes was until Stanford started releasing the old stories as they were published in The Strand Magazine sherlockholmes.stanford.edu, but these classic stories are a treat to read and are fun to try to figure out yourself before Holmes lays everything out for you all neat and tidy.

These collective stories are amazing. The way Sherlock uses his mind and brain power to the max and never doubts himself. He can take one random object and analyze it and deduct everything he can from it. He did that with a hat and cane in one story and was able to pin point exactly who it belonged to based on what he saw about it. It's fun to do the same in day-to-day life and exercise the brain! Awesome.

Someone looking for a classic mystery.
This is the first time I've read the "official" Sherlock Holmes. It is a fun classic. The annotations are helpful. It is taking a long time to get through it, but each of the short stories are good for bed-time reading, one per night.
I did have to return this book before finishing all of it, but the short stories are similar, that the other books on my night stand diverted my attention.

I love Sherlock Holmes stories because it's so easy to read one case. Even if I don't feel like getting started on a huge novel, there's always a case that fits into my free time. I like mysteries in general from Encyclopedia Brown to The Saint, but there's a special place in my heart for Sherlock Holmes. They remind me of my father since he introduced me to them.

Initial reaction is that these are really good stories and great mysteries. When I stop to really think about it though, the detail that is put in these stories is amazing. I am struck by the amount of knowledge/research that Doyle must have had to put together a character such as Sherlock Holmes.

What can I say? I don't think I had ever read a single Holmes story before I got this book, but I HAD heard a lot about his stories. Sherlock Holmes was one of the things I'd always planned on reading but never got around to. I guess that's what drew me to the book when I was in the bookstore.

So I bought this randomly a few months ago and before I could even start reading it, my brother stole it. So now we have discussions about Holmes where I pretend to know what I'm talking about because the boy stole my book. Argh.

Amazing. You go from Conan Doyle's beginnings to his greatest masterpiece, The Hound of the Baskervilles. Probably one of the first times that I have had to put down a book mid-paragraph and say "Wow". Now on to Volume 2...

I won a copy of this in a sixth grade essay contest. My first inkling that maybe I had some talent at writing. Will always love the brilliance of Holmes. Which is why I named my YA protagonist after him.

Sherlock Holmes is the original detective. His character is sharp and hard nosed. He's insensitive and to the point. If you like the TV series HOUSE, you'll love this book.

Compelling characters, excellent plot/clever mystery, and great setting become the classic definition of classic mystery. Earns a place on my bookshelves.

This is a great book. It's so cool how he solves the mysterys.
Have you seen the TV show The Mentalist? He reminds me of Sherlock Holmes.

Tons and tons of great stories. Not every one is incredible, but almost all are fun and have you trying to solve the mystery along with Holmes.

My mom once told me that you can not study all the time. This is a good break from study without loosing mental exercise.
