The protagonist is a boy named Quest (Q) who is the son and step-son of rockstars Blaze Munoz and Roger Tucker. His new step-sister is Angela (Tucker)

In the beginning of the story, Q and Angela's parents are beginning their tour as the most sensational couple in the music industry. Q and Angela live in the bus with them, but their parents are jetting all over the country for T.V interviews and private concerts.

But then things change...

This book was chosen by my students in the book club, and I have to admit, I was definitely the "reluctant" reader in this group. Interestingly enough, I would market this book to my boys, but there are only girls in my book club. So, yeah, check me out making all of these wrong stereotypes.

I, Q is a spy novel of sorts. And although I can get into a good Bon movie, I have no interested in reading about spooks. (Spooks is a new word for me. Did you know it? it means spies!)

As it happens, what dre...more

Q and his new step-sister Angela find themselves caught up in something they are not quite prepared for.
Blaze Munoz and Roger Tucker are two musicians who are starting off their tour with a wedding. Blaze had hit the top of the charts then took time off to be a mother. Roger Tucker has written songs for years. Now he and Blaze will start a new life together not only as a newly married couple with a blended family but also as the newest and hottest singing group, "Match".

This is one of those books I wanted to read, but was reluctant because of the cover. Plus, a little look inside the book told me it would probably be confusing with chapters, dates and chapters in italic. I reluctantly started on the book, about 30 pages in the book, it wasn't so bad afterall. And about a 100 pages in, it was probably one of the best books I have ever read! Roland Smith is a very good writer. The book in simple words is about 2 step-siblings. Their parents recently got married a...more

Uhm, well,... I was enjoying it at first; it is a kid's spy novel, one of the kids knows tae kwon do and the other is a good magician, the dialogue is fun, just kind of offbeat enough. But pretty soon the story starts tripping over itself. Angela takes out 2 Mossad agents with her nifty tae kwon do and Q foils an agent with a card trick. Agents are going this way and that, shedding wigs, changing accents, planting bugs, putting more agents in place, playing obscure footage of an angel or is it a...more

"Independence Hall," though a pretty decent book, never quite lived up to its potential. The book started off really well, moving at a great pace and setting up what looked to be a really exciting story. I recall reading the first eighty pages the first night I got the book. Unfortunately the story I was being set up for--about two teen step-siblings becoming some sort of spies--never really ended up happening. Around a hundred pages in, the story stopped dead in it's tracks.

For the rest of the...more

Alternate Ending

Angela turns around and notices a figure. She gives me a hint to turn around. I can hear her softly whisper "Q, I think someone is watching us". Then before I can tell her to wait she zooms off after the figure.
I watch the figure sneak out the concert back door. I see Angela; she keeps running at the figure. Who is that person?

I run after Angela and then I feel the stadiums floor hit my head. Somebody tripped me.

I yell “Angela, wait for me!”

A good, action-packed first in a series - good enough to make me want to read the next one. Q, short for Quest, and Angela become brother and sister when their parents, the famous singing duo called Match, get married. The whole family goes on tour, but while Match is in another city giving a concert, the teens find themselves in the middle of a top secret situation that involves Angela's dead mother. Angela and Q find out that someone is following them, and it is only with the help of Boone and...more

Exciting, well written, and interesting characters. There are some surprising twists in the book, which keep it interesting, even when it is another of many young adult spy novels. The things the children do are quite realistic too, which makes it better than some young adult spy novels. The only downside of the book for me was that I got a bit weary of the constant running around trying to ditch one person or another. However, it works quite well, and the ending is exciting. It leads in to the...more

I.Q. is a fast-paced mystery with likable teen characters and SOS (Some Old Spooks) teamed against the bad guys. Thirteen-year-old Quest and his new stepsister, 15-year-old Angela, are on a music tour with their newly married and newly famous musician parents. Not everyone on the tour is who they seem to be, and Angela learns that maybe her Secret Service mother didn't really die 4 years ago in the line of duty. I think IQ by Roland Smith is a great and suspenseful book. It stars the main character Quest, but most people call him Q, and his step sister Angela. Their parents got married and are both famous. So they started traveling on a tour bus with them until there bus breaks down in Nevada and they got help fixing it by an old roadie named Boone for. He turned into the driver and traveled with them. When they’re parents had to leave them...more

The book opens with Q's mother Blaze marrying Roger, just before their newly formed band and new singles go platinum. Now the whole family, including Angela, Roger's daughter, are going to trek across the US touring in a swanky van. Except things aren't exactly as they seem. Blaze and Roger are great, but Angela's mother was a secret service agent before she "died", and now Angela is being followed. Some ex-spies show up to teach the kids a few tricks and try to keep the family from harm. This i...more

I'm not done reading this book, but I wish I was. I don't know, it just hasn't pulled me in and I'm 2/3 finished. I probably won't like it very much.

I finished this book last week of August, and I think it was too soon after having read Storm Breaker. The influence of that spy book was too strong -- I expected more action, a focus on one character, a huge explosion, and a dead bad guy.

There were moments when I was drawn in because I thought the story would pick up its pace, but I didn't care for...more

I think the kids at our school will be drawn to book one in the I.Q. series because it mentions Winnemucca, Nevada where we live.

Those who are fond of spies and James Bond 007 will enjoy this story. The audience for Independence Hall, which is book one in the series, is fifth through eighth grade. The two main characters Quest and Angela are teens surrounded by some technologically-savvy adults who aren't always who they appear to be upon first encounter.

Here is a novel with terrorists, the Isr...more

This is the opening book in a new series by Smith. Those who love the Alex Rider series will enjoy this one as well. Girls will also enjoy this series due to the female character involved. I like this book because it's suspenseful, and full-of-action. It's about two kids who are step siblings, and the girl's (Angela) dad (Roger) is married to the boy's (Q, or Quest) mother (Blaze). Then their parents become famous. They are on a tour right now, traveling across the country. One day they were eating at a restaurant, because their parents had to go to New York, for work. Angela spotted a guy following them, from the wedding, to the restaurant. Boone their "driver" is not who he says...more

A lite YA thriller.

Q and Angela are united by their musician parents' marriage. Q's dad is a deadbeat and Angela's mom, a Secret Service agent, died.

While traveling around the states on tour with their parents, Q and Angela are followed by suspicious characters. Thanks to a roadie's help, they manage to evade the men seeking to kidnap Angela to use against her un-dead mother. Terrorism plays a role as well.

Good mystery, good action, and good pacing. Worth reading, but borrow it before you buy it...more

The first in a series, this book introduces Quest, a 13 year boy whose mother has just married 15 year old Angela's father, creating a musical duo that's starting a tour from Philadelphia across the country. Angela's real mother had been a spy and supposedly had been killed in Independance Hall 4 years earlier. Strange people begin showing up, trying to kidnap the teens, starting the action that continues throughout the book. Good dialogue, good rapport between the siblings. This would be good f...more
