Recommends it for: to anyone who needs a handy reference on using the English language.
Recommended to Barbara by: a homeschooling friend.
I was introduced to this book by a mom at a homeschooling retreat where we shared our favorite resources. It is a basic English handbook for eighth grade and above, that is worth keeping for the rest of your life. Newer versions with fancier covers, a change in format, and a rearrangement of the content might be even more user friendly, but this first version is fine for me and does the job of answering just about any question I might have about writing, speaking, and English grammar, spelling, ...more
I love the way the information is presented in this book. Even the retro-looking illustrations appeal to me. My favorite sections are "Special Forms of Writing" (p.112), "A Dictionary of Prefixes and Suffixes" (p.155), and "Literary Terms" (p.161). Why the hell wasn't Patrick Sebranek my high school English teacher? Is there really a hard-cover version of this book?

It's a crime that this book is out of print. I'm glad I still have my copy from junior high, but it's a shame today's students don't have access to this brilliantly succinct guidebook. I still use it to quickly remind myself how to use lie, lay, laid and lain correctly.
