Ignorance about 'merican history led me to read this, "1776," and "Founding Brothers" within the past couple years, and they're all terrific and narratively stirring philosophical and political (and, in the case of the first two, military) accounts of the lead-up to the revolution, the war itself, the founding fellas, the war's aftermath, the subsequent few decades, and basically the roots of most every debate we still face as a country (along with the proposition, implied in...more

This was really just a top-notch history book. Beginning with the Writs of Assistance arguments in the early 1760s and going all the way through until Washington resigns his commission in 1783, the book really explores the people involved. Their triumphs, tragedies, embarassments, fears, feelings and agendas are on display and it adds entire new layers of understanding to the entire American Revolution. It also reminds you of how precarious the entire situation was. Modern propaganda to the cont...more

Really fun and interesting read about the American Revolution. This book delves into the personalities behind the Revolution. For instance, Sam Adams was actually so bad in the 'beer' business (he inherited his father's malt business) that he was forced to sell. Yet he graces beer bottles today...

Overall, the book does a good job showing you the lives of many of our founding fathers, and even some lesser known participants that you may not have heard of

recommends it for: Revolutionary history buffs
I really liked this book as it put the narrative style to work on the Revolutionary War period of US history. The book works well from beginning to end as it traces the major figures and events and reveals fascinating details to the action that I never knew about, like the use of Hessian mercenaries by the British to try and stop the rebellion. This is a very enjoyable historical read.

A must-read for anyone interested in learning the behind-the-scenes story of the American Revolution. The author makes this book an easy-read with excellent flow and style and gives you much more information than you ever read in your history textbooks.
