This is Lhote's story of the adventures of his team finding and copying rock paintings in the Tassili region of the Sahara. Published in 1959, some of the racial terminology, discussion of the native Tuareg, and casual acceptance of overburdened pack animals worked to death can be jarring. But the art itself (and the trouble they went to to copy it!) is extremely interesting - I only wish more of the plates were in color.
