The Assignment (Assignment #1)
"The Assignment"
Detective Nicholas Valenti, tall, dark and stoic, has been best friends with his partner, Sean O'Brian for six years. The two men have seen each other through divorce, disaster, and danger, and saved each other's asses more times than Valenti can count. Exactly when he started seeing his blond, intense partner in another light, Valenti isn't rea...more

Opening Line: "This is gonna take some getting used to."
Set in the early 1980’s (which kept me visualizing Starsky and Hutch and hoping for descriptions of Magnum-esque moustaches) THE ASSIGNMENT is a su-weet read. Just long enough at 161 pages and certainly steamy enough, I can see myself returning to this story again and again. I really enjoyed this book a lot! I have had it for a while, however I put off reading it for some reason, and Im not sure why...
This is a story about two cops... Nick and Sean. They are exceptionally close friends. There are even some rumors going around the station that they are lovers... however Nick and Sean know better. They are just friends. Right?

The Assignment is a M/M erotic-romantic suspense story that was light on the suspense, heavy on the romance and sex.
The story is about two Detectives who are sent on an undercover assignment to pose as a gay couple at RamJack, an infamous gay resort where drugs are being sold. Someone recently died after using some bad product that was sold at RamJack and it's up to our two heroes, Nick Valenti and Sean O'Brian, to weed out and bring to justice, the bad guys. And of course, in...more
Though short (just under 200 pages) the story was not rushed. Valenti is described as being tall dark and sophisticated. While O'Brian fills the oppisite page being compact, pale and street smart.
Both cops are sent on assignment to a gay resort called the RamJack. Valenti admitted to himself he not only loved his partner as a friend, but was in love and sexually attracted to him. O'Brian, while oblivious to his partner's inner feelings, was always touchy-feely and had no problems "...more

A likable hero (Valenti) paired with a not-so-likable hero (O'Brian) + hot, kinly M/M sex scenes + silly plot with big, jarring holes = Dina was disappointed!
The premise of this book is simple: Nicholas Valenti and Sean O'Brian are two straight (but not homophobic) Homicide Detectives who, for whatever reason, are asked to work in a Narcotics Division's undercover operation to catch a big drug lord. The glitch? They have to pretend to be a gay couple in order to infiltrate the drug l...more

I accidentally read this book in one sitting when I should have gone to bed early!! Oops!

Nick Valenti and Sean O'Brian are cops, partners and best friends. They're totally different but in sync, they rely on each other and care for each other. But most importantly: they're comfortable around one another and are not afraid to get into each other's personal space. In fact: they constantly do so.
And this is exactly the reason why the men are sent undercover - as a gay couple- to investigate the ways of a high and mighty drug lord. A couple of days at the infamous gay resort the R...more

My first acquaintance with the books of Evangeline Anderson was Str8te Boys. I’m pretty sure that it was at the same time my first M/M story ever. And it got me completely hooked at the genre! It was such a sweet story about two straight roommates who start feeling attracted to one another. In fact, The Assignment reminded me of that story in more than one way. I could kind of see where the concept of this book was heading. Two agents go undercover at a gay resort to try to bust a drug ring. Although they are not Narcs, they are chosen because they are good friends and are more "comfortable" with each other than the other homophobes at the station. This is why the book gets only 3 stars: Sean has clear straight views coming from an Irish Catholic family, but he's the one that is more touch-feely and he keeps calling Valenti babe. No stra...more
I really enjoyed The Assignment! Told in third person point of view, but from Nicholas's perspective, we are just as clueless about Sean's feelings as Nick himself is. That really put us in Nick's confused shoes. LOL
And as you know, I am a big fan (zee biggest!) of the friends to lovers theme. If I wanted to have babies, I would have this theme's baby. And the Assignment can definitely be labelled as a friends to lovers type story. Right from the first day of police academy, Sean and ...more

I think I would have liked it more if it had been my first book by this author. But I was already introduced to the general characteristic of her "boys" and some of the means she uses in describing a scene or a feeling. Since it's the same author, some likeliness is bound to appear... I just found it disconcerting when reading different plots.

I found this book in the "gay-bdsm" shelve, which is really an insult to somebody who, like me, is actually into gay-bdsm. "The Assignment" was the second Anderson book I read (the other was "Slave Boy") and it was a big, big mistake to give her a second chance. Basicly Anderson wrote the same book in two different settings, "The Assignment" for guys who are hot for cops and "Slave Boy" for sci-fi-fans, so both books suffer from the same almost p...more

Ok.. This one was a bit of a shocker to me: I usually am not a fan of m/m, especially if no woman is involved... The few I've read were pretty vulgar, and I get a bit weirded out..
This one however, was excellent: I thought the author did a beautiful job of showing the evolution of the love between Sean and Nick, as well as the fears that go with it.. The fact that both heroes were males was not the focus of the story.. What was, was the fact that their love evolved from an incredibl...more

This "gay for you" story has so many great elements that I found myself smiling and aching for the main character, Nick Valenti all through my read.
Summary: Detective Nicholas Valenti, tall, dark and stoic, has been best friends with his partner, Sean O’Brian for six years. The Assignment is about two detectives, who are partners and the best of friends. They have such a strong and emotional bond that when one of them is shot and almost killed in the line of duty, one of them has an epiphany, and comes to the conclusion they love their partner more as a friend, but someone they want to have a sexual relationship with.

I have a real soft spot for the "gay for you" genre, and this is a good one.
Our heroes are Valente and O'Brien two 1980's detectives. They have a very close bond, they are partners at work and best friends in life. Love is in there too, but no sex.
You see our boys are straight. Very straight. So when Valente starting lusting after O'Brien he is seriouly confused. He watched his best buddy get shot and now all sorts of odd feelings are popping up. He does his best to ...more

Detectives Sean O’Brian and Nick Valenti have been partners for years. Affectionately dubbed “the Mick and the Spick” by their forward-thinking fellow officers, they are often teased for their close relationship. Just how close they are will be put to the test by a new assignment – undercover in a gay resort to catch a drug dealer. The only problem is that Valenti has been hiding a new desire for his friend, but he’s sure O’Brian is straight. Isn’t he?

I'd heard a lot about this book in the past, and when I decided to do M/M Romance Month I knew this was one of the books I needed to read. I'm so glad I did; I loved it!
First of all - that cover - so hot! It made it very easy to picture these two sexy cops as I read the story.

While the characters were fun and well drawn, the story was a bit thin. Also, the gay bars didn't quite ring true, especially the leather bars. And I mean right down to the names of them. I'm used to bars with names like The Stallion, The Eagle, The Vault and Ramrod so a bar called RamJack was a bit too vanilla for my sensibilities. I was also hoping to get a little taste of the leather life in the book, but that wasn't really there.

This book was just the right kind of guilty pleasure that I've come to expect from Evangeline Anderson. I'm not sure what it is about her stuff that hits my buttons, but it always does. Now to be fair, her plots do tend to be kinda silly, and this was no exception. I mean, really...two straight detectives go undercover as a couple at a gay resort in order to take down a badass drug lord...??? But who cares how ridiculous the plot sounds, because it's completely enjoyable anyway. The story w...more
I wasn't impressed. I like a good m/m law-enforcement meets romance... this just didn't combine the two genres in a good way.
The book started out like many from this genre: two partners getting the assignment of posing as gay men. Since I don't really mind this concept, I happily read on. But it seems that the more I read the more I just wanted to throw my kindle through the room. It's supposed to be two men on a case, and while on this case finding love. ★★★½☆
The plot was contrived and it's sole purpose was to get O'Brian and Valenti together. This book was about them and the smut. Smut smut smut. XD
I liked it nonetheless.

I had never heard of the "gay for you" genre - a story in which two supposed "straight" male characters develop mutual affection, love, and lust for one another. The setup - two lawenforcement "partners" are sent undercover at a gay resort, the appropriately named RamJack, in order to bust the drug kingpin that operates said resort.

Okay. This was more gay erotica rather than romance, which is fine. I love good erotica as much as the next girl. And this one surprised me by being incredibly hot in places. I love the relationship between the two main characters and love their interaction. However. The plot is just...ridiculous and the way the two end up getting together just...there really aren't words for it. I mean. I enjoyed it, thought it was hot and liked the characters, but, man, I just couldn't get over how over the to...more
This was a quick read and it was ok. Though I found the match somewhat not convincing...

This was my first m/m story. There is a vulnerability with these characters that you don't get with traditional romances. I really worked for me. If I was just commenting on the characters I would give this 4 stars. But the plot device used to put the characters together was a little cheesy. Undercover at a gay resort for a drug bust? please <G>. Watching Nick struggle when he realized he was in love with his police partner of 6 years (because Sean was almost killed in the line of duty) an...more
So deliciouslyfrustrating. It hurt but in a rather nice way. I like the way the characters were established and I could almost taste the tension between them just reading. Halfway through the book I got the feeling that maybe Sean is not feeling like Nick is just friend and that being in his head, he must be as confused as Nick is but what is going on and how the other man is treating him. It was also interesting to see the different reactions to those feelings. Where Nick retreated into himself...more
Average "gay for you" story. It read like a fanfiction with names erased. There are some typos that took me out of the story. I'm not a big fan of 'I'm not gay I just love you' type of story. It has to be really, really well done for me to buy it. This wasn't.
The narrative point of view doesn't move around that's a plus but it gave me a sense of "this is wrong" why don't you see "there something not right" here with your partner vibe. Nick Valenti is no...more

Evangeline Anderson is a registered MRI tech who would rather be writing. And yes, she is nerdy enough to have a bumper sticker that says “I’d rather be writing.” Honk if you see her! She is thirty-something and lives in Florida with a husband, a son, and two cats. She had been writing erotic fiction for her own gratification for a number of years before it occurred to her to try and get paid for ...more
