Detective Nicholas Valenti, tall, dark and stoic, has been best friends with his partner, Sean O'Brian for six years. The two men have seen each other through divorce, disaster, and danger, and saved each other's asses more times than Valenti can count. Exactly when he started seeing his blond, intense partner in another light, Valenti isn't really sure. He only knows that...more

Opening Line: "This is gonna take some getting used to."

Set in the early 1980’s (which kept me visualizing Starsky and Hutch and hoping for descriptions of Magnum-esque moustaches) THE ASSIGNMENT is a su-weet read. Just long enough at 161 pages and certainly steamy enough, I can see myself returning to this story again and again. Filled with suspense, random humour, genuine emotion and sexual tension so palpable it just about killed me, Valenti and O’Brian are a couple so deliciously hot and man...more

I really enjoyed this book a lot! I have had it for a while, however I put off reading it for some reason, and Im not sure why...

This is a story about two cops... Nick and Sean. They are exceptionally close friends. There are even some rumors going around the station that they are lovers... however Nick and Sean know better. They are just friends. Right?

Their Chief asks them to go undercover at a gay resort in order to catch an extremely evil drug dealer who dabbles in murder on the side. Sean...more

The Assignment is a M/M erotic-romantic suspense story that was light on the suspense, heavy on the romance and sex.

The story is about two Detectives who are sent on an undercover assignment to pose as a gay couple at RamJack, an infamous gay resort where drugs are being sold. Someone recently died after using some bad product that was sold at RamJack and it's up to our two heroes, Nick Valenti and Sean O'Brian, to weed out and bring to justice, the bad guys. And of course, in order to blend in...more

Though short (just under 200 pages) the story was not rushed. Valenti is described as being tall dark and sophisticated. While O'Brian fills the oppisite page being compact, pale and street smart.

Both cops are sent on assignment to a gay resort called the RamJack. Valenti admitted to himself he not only loved his partner as a friend, but was in love and sexually attracted to him. O'Brian, while oblivious to his partner's inner feelings, was always touchy-feely and had no problems "acting" gay....more

A likable hero (Valenti) paired with a not-so-likable hero (O'Brian) + hot, kinly M/M sex scenes + silly plot with big, jarring holes = Dina was disappointed!

The premise of this book is simple: Nicholas Valenti and Sean O'Brian are two straight (but not homophobic) Homicide Detectives who, for whatever reason, are asked to work in a Narcotics Division's undercover operation to catch a big drug lord. The glitch? They have to pretend to be a gay couple in order to infiltrate the drug lord's headqu...more

This was a very sweet story and I loved both characters. This book brought me in from the first page and kept me there until the end. I laughed at times during this book, then I worried about the characters and their relationship. The fact they were friends before the book started was nice. Nick and Sean were so meant for each other, even when they were figuring themselves out, I knew. Really great book :)

I really liked O'Brian and Valenti together. I really felt like they were best friends who found love with each other. And I love best friends to lovers, so this definitely met that requirement! And I enjoyed it. (Even though these characters often sent each other mixed signals and didn't communicate with each other very well.)

I feel like a lot of reviews on here talk about how the whole storyline of these cops going undercover is really far fetched and such, but I wasn't really bothere...more

Sean and Valenti are two straight detectives who have been working together for years. They are sent undercover to a gay club where they have to pretend to be lovers. Since this is an MM romance, the outcome should be obvious. The twist here is that both guys appear to be completely straight (never been attracted to men previously) but are clearly devoted to each other as work partners….so it was a bit hard believing that their sudden attraction was not more than just curiosity.

The story is fro...more

I accidentally read this book in one sitting when I should have gone to bed early!! Oops!

It's the early 80s and Sean O'Brian and Nicholas Valenti police officers partners in California. They have seen each other through everything. Nick's divorce and Sean's recent stabbing. They are best friends and completely comfortable around each other. So when I drug lord starts passing out bad drugs at the local gay bars, someone needs to go undercover toe his exclusive gay resort. The police captain choos...more

A really popular M/M romance story, "The Assignment" is. I can see the appeal. It's a quick, mostly light (Valenti ignored the memo sometimes) and good read with great sex talk.

The time setting for this story could not be more perfect, early eighties

I felt like I was reading a written cheesy eighties porno scene:

Guy #1: "Oh no, I don't know how that penny got down there, let me lube my asshole and bend down on all fours, butt-naked and see how that penny fell to the floor!"

Guy #2: "Hmm..." [look...more

Nick Valenti and Sean O'Brian are cops, partners and best friends. They're totally different but in sync, they rely on each other and care for each other. But most importantly: they're comfortable around one another and are not afraid to get into each other's personal space. In fact: they constantly do so.
And this is exactly the reason why the men are sent undercover - as a gay couple- to investigate the ways of a high and mighty drug lord. A couple of days at the infamous gay resort the RamJack...more

My first acquaintance with the books of Evangeline Anderson was Str8te Boys. I’m pretty sure that it was at the same time my first M/M story ever. And it got me completely hooked at the genre! It was such a sweet story about two straight roommates who start feeling attracted to one another. In fact, The Assignment reminded me of that story in more than one way. Both are featuring best friends falling in love and straight guy(s) turning gay. And both are written from just one point of vi...more

Having read this book for the second time, I'd have to say that my opinion hasn't really changed this is an okay book but there are better ones out there...I'd have to say it is a 2.5 star book but I've bumped it up to 3 stars because it is easy to read and not too painful.

Original Review
I liked this one but I will have to read it again before I write a complete review. It had a lot of similarities to Anderson's Str8te Boys which I had just finished reading prior to reading the Assignment. Will...more

This book is a change of pace for me, one that would definitely appeal to those slash fanfiction readers who visit here. In fact, the author's descriptions remind me of an alternate universe Starsky & Hutch with some other cop pairings mixed in. I wonder if Anderson is a fanfic writer?

Detectives Nicholas Valenti and Sean O'Brian have been best friends and partners for years. They've been there for each other through bad relationships, divorce, and danger. Nick even helped Sean work his way b...more

SlashReaders: Here's an example of a book I picked up because of the cover. The cover artist did a good job of picking something eye catching but not over the top. It's well done, it looks professional (unlike some things out there right now that you can tell from the cover that they aren't going to be great); unfortunately this book didn't exactly live up to the standards.

This is a good book to get if you are looking for lots of sex, and a little bit of plot.

This is not to say that the book was...more

First read it months ago, and after a re-read, still like it very much

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 8/10

PROS:
- Great sexual tension between two characters who think each other are straight.
- Likeable characters with a strong, believable friendship.
- Anderson does a good job of showing the non-POV character’s feelings by simply describing his actions and expressions.
- Good progression of sex scenes. Some authors write a real bell ringer of a sex s...more

I am slowly beginning to love Evangeline Anderson. Ever since reading Str8te Boys and learning of the game “Gay Chicken” (I haven’t decided whether or not I wish for this game to exist), I was hooked. Granted, The Assignment is the second story I’ve read, but I loved it too.

As you know (or not depending on if you’ve read earlier posts or if I actually haven’t mentioned it), I love novels where best friends fall in love, doesn’t matter if it’s M/M or otherwise. And this novel had that plus a righ...more

I could kind of see where the concept of this book was heading. Two agents go undercover at a gay resort to try to bust a drug ring. Although they are not Narcs, they are chosen because they are good friends and are more "comfortable" with each other than the other homophobes at the station. This is why the book gets only 3 stars: Sean has clear straight views coming from an Irish Catholic family, but he's the one that is more touch-feely and he keeps calling Valenti babe. No straight guy calls...more

I really enjoyed The Assignment! Told in third person point of view, but from Nicholas's perspective, we are just as clueless about Sean's feelings as Nick himself is. That really put us in Nick's confused shoes. LOL

And as you know, I am a big fan (zee biggest!) of the friends to lovers theme. If I wanted to have babies, I would have this theme's baby. And the Assignment can definitely be labelled as a friends to lovers type story. Right from the first day of police academy, Sean and Nick have...more

I think I would have liked it more if it had been my first book by this author. But I was already introduced to the general characteristic of her "boys" and some of the means she uses in describing a scene or a feeling. Since it's the same author, some likeliness is bound to appear... I just found it disconcerting when reading different plots.

But the story was interesting. I liked the idea of placing two cops in a gay resort... which was one of the limited solutions to getting them to act on the...more

I found this book in the "gay-bdsm" shelve, which is really an insult to somebody who, like me, is actually into gay-bdsm. "The Assignment" was the second Anderson book I read (the other was "Slave Boy") and it was a big, big mistake to give her a second chance. Basicly Anderson wrote the same book in two different settings, "The Assignment" for guys who are hot for cops and "Slave Boy" for sci-fi-fans, so both books suffer from the same almost painful to read flaws.

In both stories two men who...more

Ok.. This one was a bit of a shocker to me: I usually am not a fan of m/m, especially if no woman is involved... The few I've read were pretty vulgar, and I get a bit weirded out..

This one however, was excellent: I thought the author did a beautiful job of showing the evolution of the love between Sean and Nick, as well as the fears that go with it.. The fact that both heroes were males was not the focus of the story.. What was, was the fact that their love evolved from an incredible friendship...more

This "gay for you" story has so many great elements that I found myself smiling and aching for the main character, Nick Valenti all through my read.

The Assignment is about two detectives, who are partners and the best of friends. They have such a strong and emotional bond that when one of them is shot and almost killed in the line of duty, one of them has an epiphany, and comes to the conclusion they love their partner more as a friend, but someone they want to have a sexual relationship with.

The Assignment takes place in the early 1980’s where being loud, proud and gay for those just coming out of the closet is still very much in the baby...more

I have a real soft spot for the "gay for you" genre, and this is a good one.

Our heroes are Valente and O'Brien two 1980's detectives. They have a very close bond, they are partners at work and best friends in life. Love is in there too, but no sex.
You see our boys are straight. Very straight. So when Valente starting lusting after O'Brien he is seriouly confused. He watched his best buddy get shot and now all sorts of odd feelings are popping up. He does his best to hide it and pretends that no...more

Two best buddies in the homicide department in a California Police Department have been partners for six years and are close as brothers.
I love the best-friend-to-lovers scenario in romance it makes the most sense that you would love a friend then just lust after a stranger.
Detective Nicholas Valenti has been in love with his best friend and partner on the force, Sean O’Brian for at least a month, probably a lot longer then that, but he only admitted it to himself a month ago. This is a M/M roma...more

This was a recommendation from a very close friend and I'm so glad I listened. Evangeline Anderson grabbed my attention immediately and then I just felt like I was holding on for the ride.

Sean O'Brien and Nick Valenti are detectives and have been partners and friends for six years. O'Brien is the street tough guy originally from Boston. Valenti is the Ivy League educated from the Hamptons. But somehow they mesh and they're close friends as well as partners. The story takes place in the early 198...more

OK. I've mentioned before when reviewing m/m novels, that romance as a vehicle for pornography is not to my taste. I cannot however give a low rating to a novel just because it is not to my taste.
The writing by this author is good. The story is...ok. The plot is not so great. The graphic sex is not to my taste.
As I approach the wrong end of my 40's, I find I no longer require that stimulous of descriptive sex or for that matter, pictoral/visual representations of sex. The romance is better, the...more

Evangeline Anderson is a registered MRI tech who would rather be writing. And yes, she is nerdy enough to have a bumper sticker that says “I’d rather be writing.” Honk if you see her! She is thirty-something and lives in Florida with a husband, a son, and two cats. She had been writing erotic fiction for her own gratification for a number of years before it occurred to her to try and get paid for...more
