i don't know yet whether i can trust richard lloyd parry or not. i've only read his reports on ethnic conflicts in borneo (part 1 about kalimantan). but its already disturbing me.
is it true that the dayaks (the local in Borneo) slaughtered the maduras (settlers migrant) brutally? huh, i really want to doubt about that. but richard try really hard to convince me that it really happened in the period of 1998-1999.

Tadinya saya tidak percaya kalau Literary Review (London) menuliskan buku Richard Lloyd Parry ini merupakan gambaran nyata tentang sebuah bangsa yang sedang meluncur ke titik terendahnya. Tulisan itu pula yang tampak di cover depan buku Zaman Edan - Indonesia di Ambang Kekacauan. Meskipun ada banyak kekacauan dalam tahun-tahun terakhir ini, tetapi apakah ini tubir sebuah bangsa bernama Indonesia?

I was a little disappointed by this book. I've wanted to read "In the Time of Madness" since it came out a couple of years ago, mostly because the cover is so beautiful and the subject is unfamiliar to me. The book is divided into three sections, the first being about civil unrest Borneo, the second about Jakarta, and the third about the independence movement in East Timor. Tell you the truth, a bit shocking to follow mr parry journey reflected in this book. read our people brutalism through foreigner eyes is quite somethin. I think i need a moment to deliberate for a moment after read his report.

This is a basic introduction, written like a newspaper or magazine article, to some of the craziness that has happened in Indonesia - from headhunters in Borneo, the downfall of Suharto to the East Timor debacle. As a personal account its interesting, but as a historical account its a bit vague.

I knew nothing about modern Indonesian history and this gave me a little bit of background. I found some of the sections on East Timor to go on a little long, but since I knew almost nothing I needed to start from the bottom!
