Before tackling this book and The American back-to-back recently, my only experiences with Henry James were reading Washington Square in fourth grade (thanks for believing in me, mom!) and sneering at The Portrait of a Lady during an unfortunate collegiate phase where anything pre-post-structuralist that Shakespeare didn’t write was dead to me. So I know I don’t know what I’m talking about here. But this book was so deliriously weird, I just have to talk anyway.
