This is a cautionary near-future sci-fi story of the impact of global warming on weather patterns. We are already seeing the beginning of increased storms, tornados, hurricanes, and tsunamis (or Heavy Weather).
In 2030, the time period of the story, the majority of the U.S. government's budget goes toward disaster relief. Thousands are homeless, the U.S. economy has collapsed, entire geographic areas are abandoned, and some wildlife species die off while others grow out of control.

I'm somewhat torn over Bruce Sterling. Most of his books that I have read are from the late Eighties/early Nineties. The reader is usually introduced to a group of characters with an occupation that is out of the norm, in this case storm chasers/"weather hackers". I always find this aspect of the story very intriguing, with the technical details of the occupation being brought to the forefront to show the ways that these folks might view life differently than the rest of us. It's the e...more

Hmm... What to say? This book was not a great read. It had some good ideas, but they were hidden under a poor plot, involving some bad dialogue between two main characters I really didn't care about.
It says something about a book like this when the most interesting plot point is used as an aside in the last chapter, finally explaining a very minor character (the brother Leo) and his motivations, before ignoring it all to go back to the rather uninteresting main characters.

Very cool book. Hi tech weather chasers. Kind of thing we are starting to see on TV now, of course Bruce was way ahead of the curve as always. A side note when I emailed him to tell him how much I who'd lived in OK for 14 years enjoyed what he had done to the proud state. He answered that it was ironic a person who had lived there felt that way.
Very fast good read.

It's Twister as an engaging science fiction work: tornado chasers, environmental and genetic disasters, wrapped in the kind of sociopolitical commentary that only Bruce Sterling can fold into a narrative without being overhanded or preachy.

Bruce was global warming before global warming was cool.
frightening, entertaining, plausible the way things are headed.
I'm going to call him the H. G. Wells of our time for thinking of science fact while we call it science fiction.

I started reading this one and just couldn't get into it. It was too much into the sci-fi, William Gibsonesque future from 1994 and not into weather, so I decided to pass. Still looking for that great weather based fiction work...

Not Quite as good as "Distraction" or "Islands In the Net" but still great. What might happen if a "Class 5" tornado become self-sustaining?
More great characterization kinda weak on plot though.

Not what I'd call great literature, but a really fun read and a book I've re-read several times. Neat technology, interesting society.
