The main character's name is Ai. Ai is a Japanese name meaning 'Love'. The author's name... is Courtney Love....

Oh sure, I'll be reading this--but for lulz and lulz alone.

So. I read it.
...I'm not impressed. The story revolves around Ai, a princess from Ai-Land (yeah...) wakes up in the middle of Toyko with no idea who she is or where she's from. The only clue as to her past is a strange mysterious heart shaped box.
While I got some significant red flags from Ai regarding whether or not she was...more

Before I say anything about the actual graphic novel, let me explain the phrase MarySue. MarySue is a commonly used phrase in fandoms where an author has made herself the main character and that character becomes everything the author believes they are or wishes they were.
This manga is Courtney Love's MarySue.
Princess Ai (Ai meaning Love in Japanese so there's no pretense of who this is suppose to be) ends up in modern day Tokyo with little memory of who she is where she proceeds to sing with a...more

Manga and anime can promote something and still be decent. For instance, I like Yugioh despite the fact that it only exists to promote the card game because the story works for me. This book seems to be a medium for Courtney Love to promote her song writing and clothing style (neither of which is completely impressive to me). There are numerous parts to the story that are either weird or just corny (Ai-Land?). The biggest thing I dislike is the story element that seems to be appearing more latel...more

Recommends it for:
shoujo manga fans, music/Hole/Nirvana fans, fantasy fans
When I learned that Courtney Love - one of my favorite musicians & inspirational people of all-time - co-created this manga - which I also enjoy reading (such as Cardcaptor Sakura and Soul Eater) - I became so excited!
The story is so mysterious and interesting -- it makes me want to continue reading the next two volumes, in order to find out more about Ai's past and all that! The art looks beautiful, the characters are likable, it has music, good humor, and Gothic Lolita-like fashion.

I find it ironic that this manga I'd be interested in is cowritten by Courtney Love, who saying I'm not a big fan of would be an understatement. Her influences from her own life really show in it (also an understatement). I mean, the character's name (Ai = Love herself), the character's love interest (Kent = Kurt) and a heart-shaped box? But I was able to ignore her contribution and still like this series, at least a little. So, am I a bit of a hypocrite? Yes, maybe I am, whatever, but I've alwa...more
This was fairly disapointing. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because the art is absolutely georgous.
Otherwise this is just another attempt to create a flawless character who is oh so great and everybody loves them. A typical MarySue story.
Ai wakes up in Tokyo with no memory of who she is and where she is from. She gets a job singing and everyone immediately falls in love with her and she becomes famous pretty quickly. She mets the ˝perfect˝ guy called Kent who plays guitar.

I really wanted to hate this short manga series...on a couple of occassions, I've asked fellow manga-fans whether its wrong that I love Princess Ai. The story is written by three authors, one including Courtney Love, who isn't exactly as popular as she is famous, and I really did believe that this would be an incredibly weak story made just to make some extra bucks. I'm not exactly a fan of Love, and it just seemed like a money-making gimmick, jumping on the cult trend for Japanese manga in the...more
Honestly, it's better than I thought it would be. Ai is a princess from Ai-Land, not very creative to me. But, she is currently in Tokyo and doesn't remember much about her life. She is also being chased by one of the furies. Although I rated it 3 stars, I will read the next volume to find out what happens. I hate to stop reading something without knowing what's going to happen.
I read this when it was first released, and that pretty much was true for the rest of the original series too. Manga in the bookstore was still not a hot commodity at the time. Still, it was a good story with lovely art. I know this got a lot of talk with it basically being about Love, but I didn't care. It was captivating despite being more than a little odd.
I really enjoyed this book, yes the references to Courtney herself and her life are very blatant but it didn't really bother me as I'm a Courtney fan. I think that maybe the references could have been a little bit more subtly added I don't think it really detracts from the story as I think if Courtney wasn't credited as a creator you may not think that it's linked to her. I recommend it and I'm excited to start the second.
Princess Ai is the best manga character anyone has ever come up with! She's beautiful, talented, and has a hot bf! This book is the first book of the SECOND best manga series ever, right after Ranma 1/2. I love Princess Ai because to me, she is MY Princess. Okay, um, that didn't come out right. What I mean is she's the princess I follow. Um, yeah, so read this book, and while you're reading this, go ahead and read the other two books. But, if you feel that you don't want to read three separate m...more

Wait a minute....Courtney Love made a manga? THAT Courtney Love?
WHAT THE FUCK?
Even though I haven't really been into manga for a long time, this I gotta see.
