The intricate artwork alone warrants a recommendation, but I also enjoyed the complex, political plotlines revolving around betrayals, misinformation, maneuvering and plausible deniability. As a work of cyberpunk fiction, this is head & shoulders above other comics. The imagery is serious and almost technically precise when depicting action.

This is the book that, in my opinion, closed down cyberpunk as a literary current, in 1991. It is what the matrix tried to become, a meld of style, futurism and religious take on that basic cyberpunk question, what it means to be human.
It is a very dense book, difficult to follow and with lots of subtext and unreliable narrators. It is also incredibly well drawn and laid out. It is self contained, which is also rare on this genre.

scifi fans
Ghost in the shell was an AMAZING manga. The artwork was some of the best i have seen in manga. The action was also AMAZING. And the story was ineresting and creative. although the author could have left his sick fantasys out of his manga. Im all for fan servise but there is no need to make the major (who i had deeply respected) look like a slut. also i could just barley fallow the plot. Why do they always hafta use such big words?

I fell in love with the ghost in the shell series on tv and have tried to pick up as much as I can. one of the best concepts and stories I have ever come across. Both exciting and subtle. In your face and intricate.

great art. but the story was just nuts. i don't think this was so much a "lost in translation" problem as it was a twisted, sometimes incomprehensible narrative with gaping plot holes.

The narrator-- and possibly the author-- is a serious ordnance-otaku. I guess that provides some context for the Remington Silvertips dudes over on William Gibson's blog.

Very different from the show/movies. A little more rushed in the story telling.
