Beginning reader
For preschool-2nd grade
Pearl and Earl are trying to grow pumpkins, but Chicken keeps getting in their way - until Chicken proves useful in the garden in this book for emergent readers.
With plenty of repetition and a surprisingly engaging story, this book lives up to the publisher's label of "ideal for sharing with emergent readers." A few challenging words are sprinkled throughout, but many pages are predictable and repetitive, while still carrying the story forwards. The cycle o...more

Chicken Said "Cluck!" (My First I Can Read Books) by Judyann Ackerman Grant, illustrated by Sue Truesdell, tell a tale of Chicken's determination and triumph over grasshoppers that invade the pumpkin patch, despite being previously discouraged from being in the garden.

The book was in deed an easy to read book where children can read and follow the illustrations along very easily. The book is about a chicken and two children Earl and Pearl, who are growing a pumpkin patch and even though the chicken just scratches the dirt and follows the kids around, the children are allways shooing the poor chicken, but still she is with them the whole time. One day when the children have their pumpkins they notice that grasshopers are invading the pumpmkin patch, and the ch...more
Chicken Said "Cluck" by Judyann Ackerman Grant is a great easy to read book for students. This book has a very appealing text that has a touch of poetic flow to it. The illustrations are wonderful and really grab your attention with every turn of the page. This story is about a woman names Pearl and her husband, Earl. They are interested in growing some pumpkins in their garden. They prepare the land perfectly and notice a chicken scratching on the dirt! They shoo him away, knowing he may not be...more
This book is about two children, Pearl and Earl and a chicken. The children are trying to build a garden throughout the book while the chicken is trying to mess up what the children are doing to make the garden. Then at the end of the easy to read book a grasshopper also comes along. By the end the children and chicken are friends.

I rarely review very easy readers because they lack a good story so often. This is the exception. Two children set out to grow pumpkins. They try to shoo the chicken away, but it stays nearby scratching the dirt. The children water and weed and then watch their pumpkins grown, all with the chicken clucking and scratching around them. The chicken is useless until the day the grasshoppers come.

In this easy first reading, Earl and Pearl are trying to grow pumpkins while a chicken scratches at the dirt and clucks, while getting in their way. The garden then gets grasshoppers and the chicken saves the day by clucking and chasing them out of the garden. The ending throws the readers for a surprise that involves teaching children to share.

This fun story for the very early reader is the tale of friends Earl and Pearl as they decide to plant and tend pumpkins, and Chicken, who seems to be in their way until she helps to save their crop in a surprising way. The easy-level words, combined with repetition of phrases, help to reinforce vocabulary for the beginning reader; while the funny and easy-to-grasp plot is engaging for this age-group. Children will have fun voicing the growing frustration of Earl and Pearl as well as Chicken, as...more

beginning readers and parents reading with them
This is a fun and engaging story to read with children who are beginning to read. The narrative is simple and repeating, with lots of simple dialogue and colorful illustrations. The fact that it's an interesting story is huge for me, since I find many "early reader" books to be tiresome. Our girls liked the rhythmic flow of the words and we all enjoyed reading it together. I did not even notice the multicultural aspect of the story until I reread through it this morning - and I think that's the...more
I think this book is great for small children just beginning to read. The words in the book are repetitive and help them with learning and recognizing the words. The illustrations are bright and tell the story along with the written words. I think you can use this book to teach young children that you need to watch and listen to your surroundings. The chicken in the story was keeping the grasshoppers away by "clucking". The kids were only worried about shooing the chicken away but in the end the...more
Two children are eager to start a garden, but Chicken keeps interfering. However, Chicken comes to the rescue after grasshoppers threaten to destroy the children's work. This was...OK. The illustrations are darling, and brighten up the rather boring text. I know, this is supposed to be geared for first-time independed readers, and some repitition and limited word choice is necessary. But I've seen this type of book better done, word-wise. For example, do both children have to say "Shoo?" Couldn'...more
Chicken said Cluck was a cute story about a chicken that was only trying to help tend to the pumpkin patch, but Paul and Earl only thought that chicken was only getting in the way. Until one day they realizes something good does come out of the chicken being in the garden. I thought this was a great story for beginer readers. It wasnt a very hard story to follow and it had words that came up time and time again in the story so it allowes children to pick up and reconize words that may not have k...more
i enjoyed reading Chicken said Cluck! It's about a young chicken who wants to help Earl and Perl plant pumpkins but he seems to only be getting in their way. Finally when the pumpkins are planted grasshoppers begin to invade the garden and chickens "cluck" is what scares them away. This is a funny book and i would recommend it for children ages 5-7. I think they would really enjoy it. The illustrations are some what animated and go a long well with the humor of the story.
This book is part of the “I Can Read” series for early readers. The illustrations take up most of the space and there is about one sentence per page. The illustrations are simple outlined cartoonish figures, yet include backgrounds to give readers a good sense of setting. Earl and Pearl decide to plant pumpkins and even though she’s somewhat of a bother, Chicken just wants to help! The children try to shoo her away, but in the end she helps save the pumpkins!
This book is a great book to start young readers out on. The words are big and the story is repetitive enough in parts that the young reader should be able to catch on to most of the parts. It also shows, to a certain extent, the process of planting a pumpkin.
I would use this book with kindergarten to first grade.

A good Level 1 learn to read book. The story is nice and plausible (kids planting pumpkin seeds and wanting chicken not to get them) and repetitive for building reading confidence. Some words, like "scratch" were hard for my 4 y/o, but otherwise he attempted most words on his own. A good challenge for beginning readers.
This is a great book! My son enjoys reading it out loud, especially the "cluck" parts. It is an Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor book, and when you hear it read aloud, you understand why. I would highly recommend this book for a new reader. The most pages have 1 or 2 lines, and the most lines any page has is four.
Earl and Pearl decide to plant some pumpkins. Their chicken watches them digging and planting. They don't like the chicken being around and keep shooing him away. They don't know what to do when one day some crickets come and eat on the leaves of their newly grown pumpkins. They realize that this will probably kill the pumpkins so they are upset. When the chicken starts clucking and it scares the crickets away it makes Earl and Pearl very happy. They are so happy they even give the chicken a pum...more

However, Earl and Pearl keep shooing the Chicken away. When grasshoppers start to invade the patch and make planting pumpkins hard, Chicken saves the day. This book can be a good story for a beginning reader with the short sentences and repetitive words. However, I don't believe the story is engaging and c...more
