I read the first book for my Children's Literature class at BYU when it first came out. Well, of course I was hooked and had to read the rest of the series each time a new book came out.
I do have to say I was disappointed in the language in the last book. I really think swearing is unnecessary and I'm sad that she included it in a children's book. I know people will argue that, Rowling "didn't write that last book for children" and that the books were supposed to matur...more

I LOVE ALL OF THESE BOOKS! i was brought into the harry potter world after the second book came out. i enjoyed every book each in it's own way. i loved the first book because it helped me believe in magic again like i did when i was little. i liked the second book because i got to see hermoine grow as a stronger witch. i loved the third one because harry started to really step into his role and there was so much happening. it was an exciting book.i was introduced to dementors, azkaban, escape...more

Right before the last installment came out, I went to the public library and checked out the first book in the series, and didn't stop until I had closed the final one. It took me about two and a half months, but I read the whole series from start to finish.
Say what you will about the story, the characters, the writing, but from my experience in child care over the last five years, I can assure you that it is not all too common to see a child toting a book under their arm, waiting for three ...more

I know I have specific reviews for each of the books, but I just wanted to add a general review, especially for those wondering what people, especially adults, see in Harry Potter. When my brother was in junior high, he lent me his copies of books 1-4. Maybe it was because I was seeing the story through his eyes or that I wasn't expecting much from children's literature but I was surprised to find how entertaining and well written these books were. They had that "it" factor where you c...more

OK, let's see. Erin turned me on to the series right after we graduated high school. She said it would be good, she was right. I hate it when she's right.
I finished the book in England and bought book two there and immediately noticed that the American book cover art is eleventy billion times better than Britain's. Which I find odd, don't you?
Book three came out that summer. Then we waited for Book four and it started to get a little annoying because now everyone was reading it, but oh well...more

Sigh...
I've finally added Harry to my list. Though many of my friends here at GoodReads have given it very high marks, it simply didn't move me. Perhaps, if I had come to the books when I was 8 or 10, I'd be more impressed (though my reading was pretty sophisticated even then -- I was devouring The Silmarillion at 11). And I would (and do) give the last few volumes 3 stars -- Harry was getting older and more interesting -- but I didn't find anything particularly amazing or innovative about t...more

This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SERIES! These books are nothing short of fantastic for adults as well as children. J.K. Rowling's style of writing is completely mesmerizing. It's so easy - and so enjoyable to get lost in the world that she's created. I have found that people who don't like or approve of these books are always the same people who haven't actually read any of them through. If you read them, you will find that they are in fact very endearing as well as inspiring. If you've only seen t...more

young adults... hey, at least it got kids to read again!!!
This fantasy is fun... and at times funNY, but not really the laugh-out-loud kind. Sadly, the author is gifted and entertaining, but she doesn't quite live up to her own potential (in other words, her editor sucks). Good fiction? Certainly. Does it deserve to be the best-selling series of all time? Ummm--no. Did I stand in the Walmart line at midnight like a braces-brandishing 13-year-old with a slightly unhealthy obsession so I could get Book #7? No comment.

I'm an action/adventure nut, so the Harry Potter books were an easy sell. But beyond giving me a quick fix of adventure, I'm genuinely pleased with the focus on ethics and bravery.
In an age where we're taught not to get involved, J.K. Rowling says straightup that if you're not willing to lay down your life for your friends, you're one of the bad guys.
I think bravery is underplayed these days, even cast as reckless. And I believe that's a terrible terrible mistake that serves to isolate u...more

I have read all of these books. I like the series. It got a little more dark and a little more adult as it went on.
The first book for me was about 3 misfits in a new school:
the minority student: Hermeinie, muggle parents
The poor student: Ron, gets by as best he can
Mysterious past, has little background and not much experience: Harry
The series is not about teaching witchcraft and spells and dependancy on the occult. Its about friendship and finding out where you fit into the...more

Overall, these are one of the best book I ever read. Rich of fantasy, great story yet very detail in terms of culture and characteristic of everyone involved. And who would ever guess - on recent interview, J.K. Rowling said that she knew all along that for her Harry's stories always related/inspired by Christianity.
Spoiler:
The last book, when Harry got killed by Voldermort and met professor Dumbledore in the after life. After THE conversation, Harry returned to Hogwarts to save the world.

This is the most amazing, life changing set of books ever. You will realize how life is a fantasy. This set of books changed my personality, and improved my reading level by 50 percent. My brother didn't like to read until he read Harry Potter. If this isn't magic, then I don't know what is.

I loved all of the books. Here and there I might claim some discrepancies but the fact of the matter is that J.K. Rowling took me to a whole new world and I enjoyed the adventure and the analysis that occurred afterward.

OK: they're not great literature, but they are GREAT FUN and should be read for the sheer enjoyment of it all and the world that Rowling so deftly creates. Really, of the Brit boarding school books, the most fun.
