The books of the Guardians of Ga’hoole have several episodes in the series. The book specific to this review is for Guardians of Ga’hoole: The Return. Ketika mereka mendarat di sebuah hutan, Soren merasa ada yang aneh di dalam hutan itu. “Hutan Roh,” ujar Poot. Ternyata memang itu adalah hutan yang mengerikan. Di sana ada makhluk yang bernama Scroom, yaitu roh burung hantu yang belum mencapai Glaumora, surga bagi para burung hantu. Roh-roh itu belum mencapai Glaumora karena masih ada tugas yang belum terselesaikan.

Karena badai masih berlangsung, para burung hantu claw Cuaca terpaksa bermalam di hutan itu dan membagi giliran berjaga. Soren mendapat jadwal jaga terakhir, yaitu menjelang gelap. Waktu Soren berjaga dan berdiri di gundukan jaga, ia melihat gumpalan kabut tebal yang membentuk dua burung hantu, yaitu ayah dan ibu Soren. Tubuh Soren seakan terangkat hingga ke dahan sebuah pohon cemara. Setelah saling berbalas kata, penampakan Ayah dan Ibu Soren memberi pesan untuk berhati-hati tehadap Paruh Logam. Ketika Soren menanyakan mengapa, kedua sosok itu menghilang dan Soren terbangun. Ternyata ia masih berdiri di tempat sebelumnya, yaitu gundukan jaga. Ia bertanya-tanya apakah yang dialaminya adalah mimpi.

Setelah langit mulai gelap, para burung hantu itu pun pulang. Sesampai di Ga’hoole, soren langsung menemui Bubo si pandai besi untuk menanyakan mengenai Paruh Logam. Terakhir Bubo mengatakan bahwa yang lebih tahu tentang hal itu adalah burung hantu pandai besi keliling di Selubung Perak. Sembunyi-sembunyi Soren, Gylfie, Digger dan Twilight melakukan perjalanan ke Selubung Perak. Setelah mendapat informasi, mereka pun kembali. Namun ternyata Booron dan Barran mengetahui perjalanan itu sehingga mereka diberi Pel Batu, yaitu semacam hukuman, tapi bukan hukuman.

Diam-diam Soren dan Gylfie telah merencanakan sesuatu. Mereka akan memasuki sarang Ezylryb, siapa tahu di sana ada jejak lagi. Tapi Digger mendengar rencana kedua burung hantu itu sehingga ia memaksa untuk ikut. Di sarang Ezylryb, Soren menemukan sebuah lubang rahasia di mana terdapat benda-benda rahasia. Saat itu juga Octavia, seekor ulat pelayan sarang memergoki mereka, walau ia tidak marah dan justru memberi informasi.

Sekian banyak informasi yang didapat Soren dkk, sehingga mereka semakin penasaran untuk melawan Paruh Logam dan menyelamatkan Ezylryb. Suatu hari mereka berempat bersama Eglantine dan Otulissa berangkat menuju kastel yang diceritakan Eglantine. Sampai di sana awalnya mereka tidak menemui apa-apa.

Sementara itu di sudut lain, seekor burung hantu pekik tua bertengger di atas pohon dengan kebingungan. Dialah Ezylryb. Dia berada di sana karena tidak bisa melakukan apa-apa dan pikirannya dipenuhi kebingungan.

Kembali ke kastel, kelompok burung hantu muda menemukan sekantong bintik-bintik. Otulissa teringat dengan hal yang pernah dibacanya. Bintik-bintik itu membahayakan. Jika ada tiga kantong bintik-bintik diletakkan di tempat tertentu maka akan terjadi segitiga iblis yang menyeramkan. Bintik-bintik atau logam Mu itu dapat dihancurkan dengan api. Para burung hantu pun segera mencari api dan memusnahkan kantong logam Mu itu.

Lalu Paruh Logam dan prajuritnya datang, sehingga pertempuran pun terjadi. Martin dan Ruby kini datang dan bergabung dalam pertempuran. Ketika Soren mendekati si Paruh Logam dan mencongkel topengnya, ternyata wajah di balik topeng itu adalah wajah Kludd, kakaknya. Soren terkejut, namun tidak banyak waktu berpikir. Mereka memenangkan pertarungan, dan berhasil menemukan Ezylryb yang sudah tidak bingung lagi setelah kantong bintik-bintik logam Mu dihancurkan. Mereka semua pun pulang kembali ke Ga’Hoole.

Cerita ini sungguh menarik, terutama adegan perangnya, yang membuat saya sendiri gemetar. Baru kali ini saya membaca buku setebal ini, dan itu karena ceritanya yang menarik hingga saya jadi ketagihan dan ingin membaca buku selanjutnya.(less)

With every book I read, I become a bigger fan of Kathryn Lasky and/or Ga'Hoole. Even though the movie is so different, it was my first introduction to Ga'Hoole and the Legends of the Great Tree and the Guardians who reside there. The books had been on my to-read list for a long time, but because they were older, had constantly been pushed down the reading list. But now I am completely hooked and look forward to each new adventure as I finish the previous book.

The Guardians of Ga'Hoole series really takes off with book 3. There's action, adventure and character development all rolled into one. And can I just say, it's got Snowy Owls! I heart snowy owls.

Now onto my major problem and why this warrents a three star rating and not a four or five. Repetition. Lasky tends to over describe things to the point that I thought I was going crazy because I swear I just read a description that was worded exactly the same way four pages ago.

The title of this book rings true, for it really is, from beginning to end, a story of the rescue of Soren's mentor, Ezylryb. The Rescue is really the first book in this series that has a strong central plot that pushes all through the book. In this, the third book in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, the main character, Soren, truly becomes the leader that we've anticipated in the first two books.
The title of this book rings true, for it really is, from beginning to end, a story of the rescue of Soren's mentor, Ezylryb. The Rescue is really the first book in this series that has a strong central plot that pushes all through the book. I still feel the climax was a little weak, as the fight at the end was brief, but there is resolution. We find out the significance of the flecks. We find out who “you only wish” refers to. Ezylryb is rescued.
I also feel, for the first time in the three-book story, that Soren is truly the hero. It is Soren whose visions of his parents drive him to find out more about Metal Beak. It is Soren who seeks out information from others in the Ga'Hoole tree. It's Soren that organizes the mission to find the Rogue Smith of Silverveil. He has to make the tough and unpopular call of leaving two owls behind. It is Soren who decides to look through Ezylryb's room to find out all he can to save him. It is Soren who leads his band into battle and to victory against a superior foe. While he was a leader before when he had to be, now it fits him. He has grown into it, embraced it, and excelled in it. And being the true leader that he is, in the path of Ezylryb, is leading with no thought of his own glory.
Chapter two gives us a little discussion of who God is. Glaux, as the owls call their God, is mentioned numerous times in the first two books. This is the first discussion of who this Glaux character is. We find out two main things the author wants us to see about God. First, Poot says, “Glaux is Glaux no matter what you call him, her, whatever.” Second, Otulissa says, “No matter what kind of feather pattern, no matter what color eyes we have...all of us are descended from Great Glaux.” I'm not really sure what to conclude on the matter of God, but this is what we've been given so far.
Otulissa's previous comment about Glaux gives us some insight into the race issue. Eglantine and the other rescued owls were all different types of Barn Owls. They were captured by the “Pure Ones.” It looks like this organization was building a society of a “superior” race to dominate the world. We found out the Metal Beak was the leader of this group, and was referred to as “His Pureness.” Twilight was right on when he said, “This purity stuff sounds deadly.” Of course we have found that to be true on a large scale several times in history.
One thing I find a little unsettling is the surprise twist that Soren's brother, Kludd, is Metal Beak. It seems like too little time has elapsed for Kludd, who left home after Soren did, to become battle-tested, world renowned, and basically the king of a kingdom of owls poised to take over all of the owl kingdoms. Soren is a great natural leader, and he has risen to the leadership of a band of six owls during this time, and that was with the training of great owls at the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. Soren had barely learned to fly when they met the Barred Owl who said, “you only wish.” Already, at that point, Kludd had become the most feared owl in the world? It doesn't seem plausible. Unless the “you only wish” is referring to something else.
Once again, there is great value in what I've learned about owls. I'm now fairly certain that books 1-3 were written as one book. Most of the loose ends were resolved. Soren will take on a bigger role of leadership among the Guardians. Ezylryb will train him to be a great general. It's shaping up to be a great battle between Soren and a hate-filled Metal Beak. I'm just hoping, after three books of a 15-book series, that the best is yet to come.

This series presents an interesting conundrum for me. The main plot of the books is very Watership Down-like, anthropomorphizing animals to comment on human society and all of it's flaws and virtues. There are always dynamic quests, rich with good reveals, well-described battles, and good sense of world-building when it comes to the history of owls and their daily life.

The rescue is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. It was very well organized and thought out. I could picture almost every single part of the book, but the one that popped out the most was the battle the owls had towards the end of the book.

MY OPINION

In this books, two months have passed since Eglantine's return to her mind and Ezylryb's disappearance, and many believe the old screech to be dead. But not Soren. Soren is sure that his teacher is still out there alive somewhere, possibly having been captured by this mysterious thing that may be worse than St. Aggie's. As Soren sets out to find Ezylryb, he encounters the scrooms - or spirits - of his dead parents who have one thing to say to him - Beware of Metal Beak, a strange owl who lost half of his face in battle and had it replaced with a metal mask and a metal beak. As dead end after dead end pile up in the search for Ezylryb, Soren's learns of his mentor's bloody past. Ezylryb is actually war hero Lyze of Kiel, who fought years before in the Battle of the Ice Claws alongside his mate, Lil, who was unfortunately killed in the battle. This war was when Ezylryb met Octavia, a Kielian snake. It was the owl's idea to use these fierce snakes in battle, and so the two species joined forces. At last, they have more clues as to where Ezylryb may be, but as they venture out once more, they come to learn a horrible new truth. The strange Metal Beak who Soren's kind is to fear is someone from his own past - the one responsible for his being taken to St. Aggie's. Metal Beak is none other than Kludd, Soren's older brother who pushed Soren out of the nest when they were still young. Soren knows Kludd and his Pure Ones must be defeated, but could he bring himself to kill his own brother if necessary?

I liked the first two books in the series better, this one didn't have a very entertaining story and began to get repetative like some children's series do.

In the last book Elzryb left to find out what happened to the owls and why they got confused. But he went missing and didn’t return to the great Ga’hoole tree.

This is the third book in the series and the series is really growing on me. It is exciting and I'm learning a lot about owls as well. They kind of creep me out, but they certainly are interesting birds. I'm glad my friend recommended this series. I can read it in between more difficult books like those by Michio Kaku and still be entertained.

I've read the first 3 in the series now (found @ a tag sale). Far too much repetition of stuff that happened previously (very annoying). Also, in this one, they leave to rescue Ezylryb wearing battle claws taken from Bubo's forge but when Metal Beak attacks them, they have no battle claws. The claws aren't mentioned at all after the part where they practice flying with them at the cliffs. AND, I don't believe Kludd had enough time to get where he is. He left the nest after Soren. I don’t know much about owls, but I can tell that Kathryn Lasky does. In The Rescue, she tells all of the main habits of owls, but she turns them into fantasy in her own fun way.
In this book a Barn Owl named Soren finds that his most beloved ryb, or teacher, has disappeared. No one seemed to know where he went or why. He also finds out that a terrible force is lurking just beyond the great tree. They are owls, but they do horrible things to other owls, much worse than just killing them. They destroy their minds so that they can use the will less owls to do anything that they want them to do. Soren and his band, that is made up of an Elf Owl named Gylfie, a Great Grey Owl named Twilight, a Burrowing Owl named Digger, and himself, set out to find out what this force is up to, and basically who they are up to fight against.
Another twist in this story is that Soren’s longing to find his sister grows. He has been worrying about her ever since he got separated from his family when he was just a little owlet. He wonders if he will ever see her again, or if she is lost to him forever.
Then, all of a sudden, there were tons of owlets being dropped into a field just a short ways away from the Great Tree, and all of them are, curiously, Barn Owls. Soren’s sister, Eglantine, is one of them. All of the little barn owls that are found aren’t quite right. It seemed that all of their minds had kind of been wiped out. Now that Eglantine is back, Soren is over flowing with glee, but that was short lived. Eglantine didn’t even recognize her brother. Soren feels that this is worse than her not being there at all. His sister is there but not there at the same time.
Soren has a feeling that the mysterious force, the missing teacher Ezylryb, and his upside down sister all might have something to do with each other. He doesn’t know if his feeling is right, but it seems correct to him.
Will Ezylryb ever be found? Will Soren’s sister, Eglantine, ever be okay again? Is the mysterious force strong enough to conquer the entire forest? What will happen to The Band if they are caught? To find out you’ll just have to read the book.

I've been reading this series with my youngest daughter for several months now. She is 9 and really likes these books. I like that there is a continuing story line that follows the lives of several owls and how they progress from babies to young adults. It discusses the difficulties they've faced and I think it's a good starting point for 7-11 year olds to discuss issues they face in life. The owl books are wonderful, and this one has the young owl friends banding together to attempt a bold rescue of their beloved teacher - plus there's a crazy reveal at the end. However, the further into the series I go, the more annoyed I am at all of the repetitive reminders of what key plot points are. I'm sure Lasky's editors insisted on it so that young readers can be able to keep track of everything, but these are not complex books, and I think the kids deserve a little more credit.

Oooh yeah. After the more expository second volume, we're back into action. Soren and his band really coalesce, as they embark on two exciting missions. We find out what 'You only wish' was all about (hint: something to do with Metal Beak). Tercer Libro de la serie los Guardianes de Ga'Hoole

Continua la historia de la lechuza común Soren y su banda Gylfie, Twilight y Digger en el Gran Árbol Ga´Hoole quienes están en entrenamiento para lograr ser Guardianes.
Soren está decidido a buscar a su maestro Ezylryb quien después de la Gran Caida ha desaparecido.
En la busqueda y rescate sé verá enfrente ante nuevos enemigos y sobre todo con uno en particular que forma parte de su pasado y que ahora es conocido con Pico de Metal.

The Rescue is more of the same--some more secrets are revealed, the plot slowly progresses, and jarringly enough, the prejudice fail gets worse.

Mrs. Plithiver was a terribly offensive and tragic character in the first two books. In the Ga'Hoole world, blind snakes are kidnapped and enslaved by their white owl "masters" (Lasky's word, not mine). They rant about how most birds are disgusting, worthless, and ignorant creatures while they blindly revere whites owls.

Mrs. Plithiver was a terribly offensive and tragic character in the first two books. In the Ga'Hoole world, blind snakes are kidnapped and enslaved by their white owl "masters" (Lasky's word, not mine). They rant about how most birds are disgusting, worthless, and ignorant creatures while they blindly revere whites owls.

Now, Octavia the Kielian snake has arrived to one-up her. Octavia wasn't kidnapped to be a thinly-veiled mammy character, she was kidnapped to be a child soldier. By the protagonist's mentor. Who is a war hero turned pacifist and revered by all the other characters. And this enslavement is never implied to be anything but acceptable. Ezylryb literally buys Octavia from her parents, and no one thinks there's anything wrong with this!

So why is it, then, that St. Aggie's is the root of all evil for cultivating child soldiers, while the protagonists are heroic and noble when they do the same damn things to the snakes!?

But don't worry, because it gets even more hypocritical than that with the arrival of the Big Bad of the series, Nyra and Metal Beak's "Pure Ones". The Pure Ones believe that Tyto owls are superior to all species, and that Tyto Alba owls are superior to even other Tytos. Obviously, the Pure Ones are evil, evil monsters.

Wait, wait, wait. Everybody back up a second. Why is it that when the protagonists discriminate against other species, it's just part of being an owl, but when the Pure Ones discriminate between owl species, it's reprehensible and must be stopped at all costs? What the hell is happening here?

I just don't get this series. The bare bones of the idea (anthropomorphic owl civilization, like a bird version of Warrior Cats) isn't bad, but the actual plot is an exercise in hypocrisy. There's nothing wrong with the idea of a group of owls fighting thinly-veiled owl Nazis. But there's definitely a lot wrong with a group of owls fighting prejudice... all while engaging in it.

I'm almost inclined to take this as a straight-up WW2 allegory, with the Pure Ones being Nazis, St. Aggie's being communists, the Guardians being the Allies, and the snakes being Pre-Civil Rights Movement blacks. It's not a particularly good justification for the hypocritical prejudices of the main characters, but at least it's a little more clever and deep than the characters just being assholes.

Unfortunately, all traces of any such allegory are gone before the series is even half over, so... Nope. Still fail.(less)

Название третьей книги говорит само за себя. Все крутится вокруг исчезновения Эзилриба (да, это имя я выучила :3), на поиски которого отправляется Сорен со своими друзяшками. Одновременно развивается линия Металлического Когтя, таинственного и опасного совиного военачальника, который (кто бы думал) в конце открывает свое истинное лицо. Кстати, крайне романтичный персонаж, я сразу запала на историю о том, что он потерял половину лица. Плохой мальчик с непростой историей — это уже слюньки! Хотя будь это девочка, было бы гораздо интереснее (и потом Сорен замутил бы с ней роман, и дилемма ясна...) Но все оказалось проще.

Не знаю, плюс это или минус, но персонажи у Ласки имеют четкую направленность — то есть либо хороший, либо плохой. Бывают еще шпионы, но их всегда что-нибудь эдакое выдает раньше срока. Хотя чего ждать от книг для среднего школьного? Вот и приходится додумывать, а что было бы, если бы... фантазия моя работает на всю катушку, скоро будут сниться мультики. Мне подавай качественный ангстовый фанфик про сов. Чтобы кровяка, предательства, страсти-интриги и неоднозначный главный герой!

Как дочитаю Лакснесские эпики, пойду в библиотеку за следующей трилогией. Чует моя душенька, начинается самое интересное...(less)

Sorens Ryb (teacher) is missing. But is he really who he says he is? Or is there more?

I personally love the group "the chaw of chaws" and love that even though
Sorren and "the band" (Gyfie, Twilight and Digger) has come to the land of Ga'Hoole, they still do many things together.

And this is a major part in the series, when Metal beak's mask get's taken off. Such a shock to Sorren, who I am glad to say is being more grown up by the second. He has a moral code, and wants to save his teacher, Ezylr...more

Dieses Buch habe ich innerhalb eines Tages in einem Rutsch durchgelesen. Es war so spannend, dass ich es gar nicht mehr aus der Hand legen konnte! Und das obwohl ich mich am Anfang der Reihe ziemlich schwer damit tat. Der eigenwillige Schreibstil sowie das Verwenden von Schimpfwörtern und anderen seltsamen Ausdrücken (z.B. „gaga“, was die kleinen Eulen ja dauernd sagen) hat mich so immens gestört, das diese Reihe zu Beginn unter gar keinem guten Stern stand. Deshalb habe ich bei „Die Legende der Wächter“ auch eine lange Zeit pausiert, weil ich ernsthaft überlegt habe ob ich dabei weiterlese oder nicht. Aber inzwischen habe ich mich an alles gewöhnt und meine drei Bücher die ich von Kathryn Lasky besitze, schließlich doch gelesen. Natürlich stört es mich immer noch das für ein Kinderbuch so Ausdrücke wie „die Kehle aufschlitzen“ oder „Schiss“ verwendet werden, denn das würde ich, gerade wenn es für die Kleineren sein soll, nicht schreiben. Aber ich schaffte es dies zu ignorieren und doch weiter zu lesen. Im dritten Band „Die Rettung“ befinden sich Soren und seine Eulenfreunde immer noch auf dem berühmten Ga`Hoole-Baum. Dort werden sie weiterhin unterrichtet und in die Lebensweise ihrer Art eingewiesen. Diesen Band habe ich ein wenig düsterer und trauriger empfunden, vor allem weil gerade Soren besonders an seine Eltern denkt und sich regelrecht nach ihnen sehnt. Die Eulenkinder welche nun mehr älter werden, wachsen mit ihren Aufgaben und Erlebnissen. Soren wird dieses Mal besonders gefördert, weil ausgerechnet sein liebster Lehrer Ezylryb spurlos verschwunden ist. Deshalb machen sich die Jungeulen auf um das Geheimnis um sein Verschwinden endgültig zu klären. Mir hat dieser Band deshalb so gut gefallen, weil wieder viel Spannendes passiert ist und nicht alles sofort aufgeklärt wurde. Man darf mit den Eulen miträtseln und mitfiebern, weil man an manchen Stellen selbst ratlos dasteht. Und was mich am allermeisten begeistert hat ist der Zusammenhalt der Eulen, vor allem Sorens Verhältnis zu seiner Schwester Eglantine fand ich so toll. Das ist wahre Freundschaft für mich! Und vor allem der Schluss hat mich beeindruckt, doch ich will nicht zu viel verraten. Nun überlege ich mir, ob ich nicht doch mit Band 4 weiter mache, denn jetzt hat auch mich das „Eulenfieber“ gepackt!(less)
