I never realized I would learn so much about owls in a fantasy novel. It made the story all that more interesting to me. This book is truly unique and was a joy to read. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

This book is about Soren, a barn owl, who is kidnapped by a group of owls who are trying to take over the owl world. He's taken to St. Aegolius Academy, where all of the owls are "moon-blinked" or brainwashed, and made into their slaves. He and Gylfie, an Elf Owl, work together to escape. Lasky originally intended to write a nonfiction book about owls, but instead wrote this series, so you learn all kinds of things about owls from these books. This is Cynthia's (the girl that I mentor)...more

716890-p1-1198751356 I bought the first three of this series about 4 years ago - not because I have kids the right age (they were then 15 and 21) but because I love owls. I collect ornaments and paintings and calendars and books, but only good quality books so I made sure they were going to be readable.
Now it's 4 years later and I suddenly realised that there must have been more titles added to the series since I bought these three, and so I've gone online and have ordered in 11 titles to brin...more

My eldest son is a big fan of this series, so I decided to read this so we could discuss it.

I was suprised and pleased by the first book in this series. The characters were interesting and likable (except for the bad guys, who were very satisfying baddies) and I definately wanted to find out "what happens next." I think there's a lot of good themes in this one, particularly for the young crowd that it's written for - belief in oneself, standing up for what's right, the importan...more

The first book of a series of 15. I think the 15th has either just come out or will be in the near future. Kathryn Lasky, the author said it was definitely the end. This first book is about a fantasy world of owls, all kinds. This first one is about Soren who is pushed out of his nest by his brother and is kidnapped and taken to an "orphanage" which turns out to be a pretty terrible place where the owls are brainwashed for something more ominous. A lot of owl facts along the way. I ...more

I know I am a bit old to have jsut read this, but it is a bestseller series and thus I was curious. While it just appears to introduce characters and concepts, I kept expecting more to happen due to the description of the back of the book (we do not meet all four owls mentioned in the description until the end). The book also seemed very irrational even for its reading level, and even onto silly-sounding terms like "hark" and "glunking moon." Still, the culture of the owls...more

this is a fun adventure story that starts the beginning of a series of books. They take you on a quest for truth and eventually good versus evil. I used to read this to my class of 4th graders every year and they always loved it. It got them really interested in different species of owls, and animals in the forest. Also, they always wanted more - it was a fun series to get them hooked on. The books get a little more sinister as the series continues, like every classic good vs. evil story go...more

I picked this up after someone else brought it up in a meeting. Decent young adult literature and reasonably written. I enjoyed it the way I like young adult books that seem to take two totally unrelated topics and mash them together in an unusual way. In this case, a free association of owls and brainwashing. However, once out of the scary mental conditioning camp, the story felt a little light and fluffy. I'm debating reading the next one, I may pick it up from a library if it's available.

This is a kids book (probably ages 7-12?). I make sure to read a series before I start buying it for Jake so I know he's really getting it when he reads it. I really like this series. Those of you without kids probably won't be that impressed (it's not Harry Potter or anything) but I would definately recommend it to other kids and parents that I know. It's a good interesting story, with enough excitement to hold a kids interest. Jake loves it.

I enjoyed this book. I thought kids would like the way it creates a different world and delves into the cultures of various types of owls. It was also quite suspenseful. Unfortunately, I immediately picked up the second book in the series and abandoned it soon after. I got tired of the author reiterating what happened in Book One. I think a year or two in between would be good, but my student was happy to churn right through them...

This is a great book starting a wonderful series of fictional owls. I love these books, but they are not extremely high level, and it is for that that I (although would definitely say it's worth it to read these)am not sure they are entirely appropriate for those of you (my friends) who have not already started these. However, despite the fact that I gave this a 4/5, they get even better!!!

My biggest dissapointment with this book was...it was BORING. The author really is specific about all of the owls in the book, blah, blah, blah. When I started this series I didnt realize it was ONLY about owls. I thought there would be humans to, some sort of fantasy world and they work together to defeat evil. If you have a 10 year old who really like animals this series is for them.

Ooh, this is good. I decided to try another animal fantasy book, just to make sure since I didn't much care for Redwall. This is the first book in the series, there are 11 total. Great character development with 'real' emotions that I can relate to--well, besides having a gizzard. There is much evidence of the author's extensive field research of owl behavior.

Picked this up in desperation in the middle of a flight, read half of it, and put it down again. The writing manages to be pedantic, stilted and infantile all at once, while the plot is a confusing mess and the characterization is nonexistent. There are many series for this age group that are worth far more attention; read them instead.

(not the best through but its one of my favorites! and I don't have many!)
