The 'For Dummies' books have an unearned stigma, I think. In general, books that survey subjects are considered inherently flawed because those that are "in-the-know" feel slighted by the lack of nuance these books give to their subjects. My feeling is, they're not meant to, and I've always thought the 'For Dummies' books were great for everything I've ever turned to them for. They do a great job of covering the entirety of a subject enough to hammer home the fundamentals but provide e...more

Another one recommended to me by a nun: I shit you not.
Come to find out, for good reason. Despite the embarrassing series/title, this has lots of good stuff in it. There's LOTS of cheesy humor that you'll need to step around, but I have yet to find an overview as thorough and novice-friendly as this one. Mine is literally thumbed, dogeared, and coffee-stained to the limits of readability I've used it so much. (Sister C. the Sex Therapist, originator of "we're all bad Catholics and a...more

I am currently a catechumenate in the Catholic church and want to learn more about the customs and basis of the Catholic religion. This book is pretty good at giving the facts without a lot of bias.

So I figure I'll be currently reading this one for awhile but I'm going to move it to the "read" shelf because I've read most of it. I am a dummy when it comes to Catholicism and this is a helpful, thorough introduction. If you're interested in learning more about the religion, I'd recommend it. It seems to be a good starting point.

I have been catholic all my life, and now I am trying to get back into my faith. This is a great book to start with. There are so many things I don't know about my own religon that I hope to understand a little better through this book.
Very good book, and it will be a good reference when I need it.

I didn't like how it was organized, and the attempts to inject humor fell flat. 300 Most Frequently Asked Quetions About Catholicism, by the same author is a much better reference read.

Better than the one for idiots. Maybe I'm just a dummie...but if I had to pick one book for someone to get a flavor of the Catholic Church it would be Rome sweet Home by Scott Hahn.

My quick go-to reference whenever I have a question about a specific doctrine or need a simple explanation for someone who isn't Catholic or my elementary age Sunday school classes.

A great book! I bought Understanding Catholicism for Dummies too, hopefully it is not a repeat. Don't worry. I'm sure I will let you know.

A good reference. I would never read it cover to cover, but it is a good book to have on the shelf when I have a question about Catholicism.

I would recommend this book for non-Catholics and Catholics alike. The format is so easy to follow, and the author is a hoot!

I think it gives a somewhat bizaar account of what it means to be catholic.
