Robert Aickman is one of my favorite writers. He's a great supernatural fiction writer and pretty much everything he wrote can be put under that genre but at the same time you could also put him up there with Kafka, in terms of bizzare and unsettling little stories which poke at bigger questions.

I'd put Aickman in the same category as Ramsey Campbell, Jonathan Carrol and Alvin Lu - writers who are obviously extremely talented but who are frustratingly vague about just what the hell's going on. Another love/hate thing. Try it if you're game. It's got a great cover by Edward Gorey going for it. :)

This is a great collection of haunting short stories. Aickman is a masterful writer, whose best stories are understated masterpieces of dark and unsettling psychological fear.
