Anne Shirley has left Redmond College behind to begin a new job and a new chapter of her life away from Green Gables. Now she faces a new challenge: the Pringles. They're known as the royal family of Summerside—and they quickly let Anne know she is not the person they had wanted as principal of Summerside High School. But as she settles into the cozy tower room at Windy Po

I loved this one. I think at the beginning I was a little skeptical, especially since Montgomery kept omitting the parts where Anne "had the right pen" to write love letters to Gilbert. I wanted to READ Anne's love letters!

But for all that, I loved the characters in this book. Rebecca Dew cracked me up, as did Aunt Kate and Aunt Chatty, with their buttermilk secrets; Dusty Miller the cat; Katherine Brooke; Nora Nelson and Jim Wilcox; little Elizabeth; Cyrus Taylor (oh, but that was a hilarious e...more

After reading Anne of the Island, my favorite book in the Anne series, Anne of Windy Poplars always seems to fall a little flat for me.
Anne and Gilbert are engaged and while Gilbert is off at medical school, Anne has taken a job as principal at Summerside High School.
Much of this book is made up of letters from Anne to Gilbert. I just wish there was more of Gilbert in this story like maybe some of his letters to Anne. L.M. Montgomery rarely wrote much from the hero's side in her books, something...more

In a word....disappointing. It was good enough to finish. but it took 2 or 3 weeks to get through. This is a good indication of my interest level, because really great books keep me up at night until I finish them. This one....not so much.

I didn't care for the style--half letters from Anne to Gilbert, and half third-person, with no good reason to switch back and forth between the two. There are a ton of new characters, but the sheer volume precludes any satisfying character development. Anne see...more

Please someone tell me if I'm crazy....Did Anne Shirley and a student named Lewis meet with a ghost, take a picture of him, and then when they found out he was a ghost, they took in total stride and gave the picture to his father?

Did that seriously happen in this book? Or did some of my pages have LSD on them?

Ok, I have loved all of the books in this series so far, however, this one was a little...how shall I say this - eh. That's what it was. Eh.

Anne writes lots of letters to Gilbert, but we never get to see any letters that Gil writes to her. Also, lots of new characters are introduced in this book and I wonder how on earth Anne is going to keep up with all these people.

Also, Anne has officially turned into the perfect person who changes the life of everyone she meets. Honestly, does this woman hav...more

As much as I enjoy the original Anne of Green Gables , this and Anne of the Island are probably my favorites in the series. Anne's grown up, still both stubborn and dreamy, and I find it easier to read her stories at this stage of her life than when she was a small child. For similar reasons, I'm not as fond of the later books in this series, where Anne becomes a flatter, duller character, and then eventually fades to the background, letting her children's stories come to the fore-front. This i...more

I read this as part of my once-yearly reread of the Anne of Green Gables series. It's almost more like a collection of vignettes within the framework of Anne Shirley spending three years as a high school principal. Most characters aren't seen again. The book was written out of order; there's a three-year gap between the end of Anne of the Island and Anne's House of Dreams because Gilbert was going to be in medical school for three years and couldn't marry until he finished. So there is a sense o...more

I thought this one was going to be pretty lame from the very boring letters "to Gilbert" which it begins with. Once those were mostly over the book was more delightful than the last one. The story of the sulking Mr. Cyrus Taylor was fabulous.

Although they were funny, there were too many ill-humored cranks in this book...are there really that many in a small population? The book seemed more like a sort-of inter-related series of short stories than a plotted novel, but they stories were fun, so i...more

I sort of get the feeling, reading this book, that L.M. Montgomery was often trapped in rooms with eccentric women who nattered on. I get this feeling mostly because Anne keeps getting trapped in rooms with eccentric women nattering on. Character development was nil here. Anne encounters different people over three years and manages to happily change all of their lives. Except that eight year old boy the author killed off so that another character could have a happy ending. She writes letters to...more

My memory of Anne of Windy Poplars is.. non-existent. It's been so long since I've read the books and I see the PBS movies (which are wonderful in their own right) once or twice throughout the year, so it's easy to forget that Anne of Avonlea (the movie edition) is a mix-match of several books in the series.

In Anne of Windy Poplars the dreaded Pringles make their appearance. And it's oh so much more than the movie shows. They are so dreadful, each and every one of them, but everything else is an...more

Anne has morphed into Mary Sue. In other news, bears shit in the woods.

I'm beginning to believe that LM Montgomery wrote the Anne books as an escapist fantasy for herself, as Anne is so utterly impossible a creature - with Anne's background, she would be permanently damaged psychologically, and this happy horseshit of "Oh, [insert name here]! Isn't [insert random natural phenomenon here] wonderful? Isn't it splendid to know that tomorrow will always come?" is simply unbelievable.

It's still an Anne book and so it's still warm and wonderful and I found I couldn't give it less than four stars, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first three installments. For a start, many of the stories and characters start to feel a little derivative of those from previous novels. Secondly, Anne's vanity/concern with outward appearance really grated with me at times and seems to come more to the fore in this book, more than any other. Finally, it feels as though Montgomery chickened out...more

Sweet.

Mereka bernama keluarga Pringles. Keluarga Pringles ini sangat s...more

Yawn. The writing style was tough for me, as Anne writes long letters to Gilbert- detailing her life in Windy Poplars, far too detailed in some respects and not nearly enough in others. She meets a million new people, and seems to work her considerable charm on them without fail, but she doesn't spend enough time with many of them to develop the characters fully. It was like going to a party, meeting a bunch of new people - many of whom capture your interest, and then never seeing them again. Fo...more

A lot of this book was tedious, but there were enough good parts to make it go from a 2 star to a 3 star book.

Part of the problem was that the characters were generally not that interesting. A few were good, but some seemed just like characters from the third book. Some of the people even made the exact same jokes. Part of the problem was that there were so many characters no one really got to develop, and part of the problem for me was that some of the characters were merged in the movies and t...more

Most of the beginning of the book is written in the form of letters to Gilbert, and I didn't quite like it. Oh...Sudden thought: I suppose people who steam other people's mail to read the contents would have appreciated this seeing as it's a free peek into other people's private letters, but in this case the thrill is kind of non-existent because there isn't any challenge anymore, and frankly, try as she may to be interesting, her letters are not. Thus, I'd recommend this as a very good hypnotic...more

I adored this book, and I think it's my favourite of the Anne series so far. It shares the strengths of the previous books in the series (which, however, are dulled somewhat in Anne of Avonlea) of being beautifully, originally, and descriptively written and of having diverse, very well developed, interesting characters—many of whom are women. It unfortunately also shares the disturbing tendency to occasionally include racism toward Roma people, and this is somewhat more evident in this book. Thi...more

Short version: Meh.

The rest: She's getting a bit cynical, which is no surprise considering some of the traumatic social scenarios Montgomery pelts her with. I like that, because it's a realistic bit of evolution in a maturing character.

The glowing-angel-lighting-up-every-room thing is, however, very tiresome. Reminds me of the bit of the Matrix trilogy when Neo becomes superman/Jesus, impervious to failure, adored and/or grudgingly admired by the masses. Gives you little incentive to read when y...more

I enjoyed this book a lot once again because Montgomery really describes Anne as a beautiful young woman beautifully. I loved reading about the new characters such as the Pringles (and Anne fighting to win their friendships...and succeeding), little Elizabeth, Aunt Chatty, Aunt Kate, Rebecca Dew, Katherine Brooke and the faithful Dusty Miller. The only thing I did not like much however was that Montgomery ONLY talked about the new characters and Anne being friends with them. Of course letters to...more

Anne continues to grow up as she begins her first job as a graduate of Redmond college. She takes up a job as Principal of Summerside high school, where she must conquer her biggest challenge yet- the prestigious and extensive Pringle family. As she struggles to find her place in the small town, Anne overcomes many obsticles with her characteristic kindness and wiity charm.
As always, every one of Montgomery's characters are fabulously created and quickly became dear to my heart. But my favorit...more

Now in her late teens (or somewhere around twenty, I don't remember anything being specifically said about her age), Anne has completed her schooling and now must be the one doing the schooling - quite the reversal of roles that is exacerbated by Anne moving to a new place for her job.

However, Anne is as loveable as ever, and makes friends with her students and some of their parents as well as new neighbors, including Minerva Tomgallon. Of course, there's a few people who aren't too crazy about...more

The story of Anne's years at Summerside is partially told through excerpts from her love letter to Gilbert (although, most of the "love" is left out, perhaps LM thought that sharing the romantic details was too risque for the early 1900s). The rest of the novel reads more like a series of short stories which are based on either Anne's matchmaking endeavors or her ability to mollify even the most cantankerous citizens of Summerside by showing them how to see beauty and happiness in every day life...more

"Anne of Windy Willows" is the fourth book in the "Anne of Green Gables" series. In this book, Anne Shirley moves to Windy Willows to be a new principal of the school. However, the school is owned by the family Pringles. The Pringles family is the most populated family in Windy Willows, and they have control over everything. But, the Pringles are far away from what you'd expect from the leaders of the Windy Willows. They're evil, mean, cruel and everything opposite from the word "nice". They don...more

Anne of Windy Poplars is exerpts of letters from Anne to Gilbert with some commentary about her life as a school principal in the town of Summerside. I love the bygone days of letter writing and wish that text messaging had the same appeal. This book in the series was a little "sugary", but I still enjoyed it.

Out of the whole set of Anne books, this is the one that I'm always tempted to skip over, but that would be such a horrible mistake. It is just as delightful as the others. True, Gilbert does not take an active role in it, which IS a travesty, but Anne's letters to him are so sweet and affectionate. I only wish there were also some letters to Anne from Gilbert.

Particularly if you've seen the movies, this book should not be passed over. I think it's so fun to see how they stayed true to the stor...more
