I really enjoyed this book by Suzanne Brockmann about the Navy Seal Team 16 and their romances. I gave it 3 stars because it felt like that Brockmann's main plot was weak. I didn't like Meg at all and the relationship with John and dialog felt weak and forced, almost not interesting. In fact, MEG IS TOO STUPID TO LIVE. Sorry, had to get that off my chest. I hate it when female characters are stupid. "Oh gee, I have a big strong Navy Seal to help me but I'm sure I know better how to handle a terr...more

This was a really good book, but i have to agree with others that Meg got on my nerves a time or two. Not enough to ruin the book for me, but there were a few times i want it to plain smack her. It seem to me that her decisions were all very stupid, she truly topped the cake when it came to stubborn heroine for sake of being contrary.
I started reading this series after numerous rave reviews from friends. I really liked Unsung Hero, and I liked this one as well, just not as much. The romance between Nils and Meg seemed stilted and the intensity of the other romances overshadowed theirs so much that I had a hard time enjoying their story. Nils was great but, Meg verged on TSTL in my mind. The continuing story of Sam and Alyssa was fun to read but the story that made this whole book for me was the story of Eve and Ralph. Partic...more
I read this one after reading Over the Edge (Book 3)in this series. The stories do stand on their own, but it's much better to read them in sequence as you see characters throughout the series and see their evolution. The characters in this series are vividly drawn and realistic and you can't wait to hear more about them as the series progresses. This series is rather addictive.

IMO, not quite as good as the 1st book. I think it's because the stories behind the stories about Meg and John (Nils) were stretched out until the end of the book. And it was tough to see Meg putting herself deliberately into harm's way, asking for Nils' help and then lying through her teeth. She's a smart cookie, no doubt... but is she really *that* smart (view spoiler) Meg didn't th...more

This book kept me up until the wee hours of the morning. I was entranced by the way it was written, and well, I literally couldn't put it down. Brockmann's novels are just more than romance. This one, as with her other books, had several story lines running simultaneously. That didn't detract for me, because she wove the individual stories together well and avoided being disjointed. Why only 4 stars? Because I didn't like the Hero or Heroine. Especially the heroine. For someone who worked in for...more
I'm going to start this off by saying I think it depends on what sort of read you're looking for. This book had the action with the mission of rescuing a little girl and grandmother from terrorists, then it had a subplot that included fiesty, snippy, teasing, "I-want-you-but-won't-admit-it" love story, then on top of that subplot it also had a sickly sweet war romance from way back in the day. So it's got all things going for it. Not all of it awesome, but overall it was a neat package.

I disliked the characters, and I disliked the author's writing style.
The author has five different stories happening, 3 current day and 2 flashbacks. She frequently is telling one story, then stops at a cliff-hanger point, then goes on to another two stories before coming back to the first story. Notwithstanding the cliff-hangers, she is jumping around within these five stories for the entire book. It was irritating, annoying and offensive. It felt worse than tv commercial interruptions. The best part of Suzanne Brockmann's books are the characters, and this one was no different. I read several of her Troubleshooter books a long time ago (obviously out of order) and whole I can barely remember the plots, I can remember the characters (especially Locke and the LT) vividly.
Couple of things about this book:
1. The grandmother's story was interesting! It had nothing to do with the story, but I still enjoyed getting back to it for the most part.
2. Nils is cool. So is Meg. Her insisten...more

Troubleshooter books almost always have three love stories running through them in addition to the action plot.
The main romance(Meg and John): I like how Meg was so conflicted about her feelings while she's married, although I think it would have had even more of an impact had her husband had more of a role. Meg and John have great chemistry as characters.
The secondary romance(Sam and Alyssa): This is where it begins. The six book saga of Sam and Alyssa. They're not my favorite characters but...more

When some terrorists, that have taken her daughter and grandmother hostages, approach Meg Moore she doesn't think twice and agrees to go to the Kazabeck embassy and abduct the ambassador. She has no demands except to talk with Lt. John Nilsson, a navy SEAL that she met a long time ago.
When John gets the call to go into a hostage situation and learns that it is Meg the abductor, all he can do is help her even if he loses his career. And all because he never had forgotten her or the kiss they shar...more

I have to agree with other reviews I've glanced at--for most of the novel, the main female protagonist is just too stupid to be believed. Let's see--your daughter is taken hostage by a terrorist extremist group and they want you to use your connections as a linguist to hold another terrorist hostage at his embassy and then deliver him to them in exchange for your daughter's life. Okay. Now, would you have a better chance of getting your daughter out of that situation alone, or with a team of Nav...more
This series is amazing, so much in fact that I’m actually reading the books consecutively, though I’m skipping around the timeline they were written in. The series is fun, intriguing, romantic, and easy to lose yourself in. Having said that, I have to admit that so far, “The Defiant Hero” is my least favorite so far
Brockmann follows a basic formula: main storyline, side storyline, side storyline that takes place around the time of WWII. In “The Defiant Hero,” the main storyline is between John...more

I think a more accurate rating would be 3.5 stars. Although I liked it, I didn't think it was as good as the first one.
The main thing that I didn't like about it was Meg, she really bugged me by doing some irrational things. However, although I don't personally have children I can see that having your child kidnapped by terrorists is not going to make you think very clearly. I also didn't really see the attraction between Meg and Nils, for some reason I just didn't get how they were in love with...more

This was my first Suzanne Brockman book, and this review will most likely mention the good and bad similar to other reviews.
First of all, I really enjoyed my first foray into the Brockman world. Her writing is very good, she is a very good storyteller and I was sucked right in from the first page. Enjoyed it from start to finish.
Like other reviewers, I found the heroine to be a tad annoying. I could understand her dilemma and I understood she had to put her child above all else, but with a team...more

I loved it. For me, it was so much better than the first one.
Here are the things I liked:
The couples. I like every single couple in this one. Each couple's story was compelling, intense and romantic.
The plot. You are immediately drawn into the action from the beginning. Meg is put in an dangerous and impossible situation in order to save her daughter and grandmother. And there is a big "will she save them" vibe throughout the whole book.
The sexual tension. The sexual tension was ripe in this one...more

3 stars...
I can really see why Brockmann has such a following. Parts of this book were wonderful and others just dragged. Again, we have 2 story lines that take place at the same time and we also have another WWII romance.
John 'Nils' and Meg
Let's just get this out there... John is a catch! He's written with honor, conviction and a hidden past. Meg on the other has is a little older, and she's been hurt in the past and only want to take care of her daughter, Amy. This is the part of the story tha...more

I don't think I can read mulitple Brockman books in a row. Three storylines is too much for my brain to process. I really don't like it, and despite liking the main story, the book is already losing a star because of it! Gah!
Also, I'm sorry but the heroine was Too Stupid to Live. TSTL. The whole book I wanted to strangle her. John was great.
The side story with Alyssa and Sam made the book palpatible.

I really, really liked this one! From the beginning, where Meg is informed that her daughter & grandmother have been taken hostage by religious radicals in exchange for one of their enemies that she has access to, it's a race against time to find the best way to get her daughter back alive.
I loved the relationship between Meg & John, especially John's side of it. I really think Meg should've let John handle things long before she did, but I am glad she finally did.

It took me longer to read this book than I had wanted. Partly because there were times when I was bored of the story. I like the historical side story with Eve and Ralph, and I enjoyed Alyssa and Sam's story, but at times Meg and John drove me crazy, and not in a good way.
Once I managed to get into it, though, I started to enjoy it more and I couldn't read fast enough. But it wasn't until near the end. I was happy to finally meet Jules (because he is literally the reason I am reading this entir...more

I may have to change this to a five star after I think about it some more. I really loved John's character. Great sense of humor, focused, persistent rather than overtly stubborn. I enjoyed Meg's character as well, and though I don't know what that kind of parental desperation feels like (yet) she was very compelling, and obviously very smart. Great chemistry between the main characters, lots of that banter I love, even under stressful situations. As far as secondary plot lines go, I enjoyed the...more
A rather action-packed thriller/romance that was alternately delicious and irritating.
The Good: Our Hero, a completely charming Navy SEAL linguist (who speaks Welsh!); the heroine's grandmother, an octogenarian who's quite capable of rescuing herself; a fantastic cast of supporting characters, who I can't wait to get books of their own; a love scene (non-explicit) with implied chocolate sauce and handcuffs.

This series is quickly becoming one of my favorites to read, they are full of action and romance, and the relationships are more complex than a safe combination.
John and Meg meet when he and his SEAL team rush into the embassy where Meg worked escaping some terrorists. Ah, these stories are just woven together so well.
This book is Meg and Nils' story, and is a completely believable set of actions made by a desperate mom whose daughter and mother have been kidnapped. There were SO MANY things wrong with this book. Let me spell them out for you so you won't go into this blindly like I did:
1) The heroine Meg is stupid with a capital S. She tries to take on a terrorist organization on her own--even when an experienced Navy SEAL is begging her to let him help.
2) At no point does our so-called hero (a Navy SEAL, remember?) wrestle the gunn away from Meg, who's holding him hostage. Um, she's inexperienced; he's a SEAL. If he can't wrest a gun away from a civilian...more
