When I first read one of Charles Tomlinson's poems, over ten years ago, I was struck by the powerful presence of an element which, later, I found in almost all his creative work, even in the most reflective and self-contemplating: the outer world, a presence at once constant and invisible. It is everywhere bu we do not see it. If Tomlinson is a poet for whom 'the outer world exists', it must be added that it does not exist for him as an independent reality, apart from us.
