"Smart, irreverent, often unnerving, these sonnets smirk, smile, argue and bless. Jee Leong Koh has taken a month of days and rendered a very contemporary version of the artist as a young man. Cash in your paycheck and buy this book."--Marie Howe

"Payday Loans," Jee Leong Koh's first collection of poems are dense snapshots of the everyday lives of the characters who are struggling to survive, find love, write poems and get ahead. The challenge the poet set for himself - writing a sonnet every day for thirty days - presents the reader an opportunity to set foot in the every day vacillation of the poet's mind, as if to witness his process of becoming. It reads like how vulnerability should read. Indeed, any one with enough diligence can compose beautiful sentences and phrases. The most admirable feat the poet has achieved is honesty, with that, vulnerability. Not everyone has the gumption to peel away those safe layers of ...more

The only criticism I can level at this remarkable collection is how some poems seem to be 'filler,' or -gasp!- churned out in an effort to achieve a sonnet a day. Keeping measure is keeping time, I suppose, and Jee does a wonderful job of playing with rhyme and meter and form itself, almost as if trying to defy the specter of death and debt. More, please!
