I am not done with this yet, but ....

Snodgrass sets himself the task of reconstructing as much as possible the developmental processes that occurred between the interruption of the Myceaenian culture and the rise of classical Greek culture (e.g. Homer), i.e. roughly 1250bc to 800bc.

That time period is called the Dark Age because we know so little about it. The historiographical challenge of giving an overview of such a period should be obvious: How do you explicate an absence?

Despite its age (1971), this still remains a good starting point for anyone interested in learning more about the Greek "Dark Age". The basic outline of the history of the period was codified in this book, for better and for worse, and much later literature on the subject draws heavily on Snodgrass's Dark Age of Greece.
