Traitor (Star Wars: The New Jedi Order #13)
From the depths of catastrophe, a glimmer of hope.
After the capture of Coruscant, the mighty heart of the New Republic, a stunned galaxy fears that nothing can stop the Yuuzhan Vong. Still, that crushing defeat produces one small miracle: Jacen Solo is alive. Yet he can scarcely imagine himself in stranger circumstances.

I’ll begin by saying that this book was better than I thought it would be, but not as good as I’d hoped it would be.
What do I mean by this statement? Well, I’ll try to explain throughout the rest of the review. For the sake of those fans who have yet to read the book, I’ll try to remain as spoiler-free as possible.
I have to admit that this novel was probably one of the most well-written Star Wars novels I’ve ever read. This dialogue was believable, if not strange in some sections. The language w...more

My favorite Star Wars book of all time set smack in the middle of the Yuuhzan Vong war focused of the character of Jacen Solo (Han and Leia's son) and his capture. This is were the plot of continuing Star Wars book took a socking twist. Read and you will love even if your not a major Star Wars nerd. If you want the whole story read the other books before it starting with Vector Prime. Anyways it was a great work with twists and turns and amazing character development.
Easily my favorite Star Wars novel ever. Close to my favorite NOVEL ever. Matthew Stover, like Chris Avellone and the other writers at Obsidian Entertainment, is amazing at pulling on the loose threads in a setting and playing on your assumptions. The first half of the book reminds one of Conrad's Heart of Darkness, in that it is an extensive character study first and foremost, and a philosophical treatise on pain and suffering second. My only complaint with the book is that since I read it befo...more
My favorite Star Wars book and one of my favorite books of all time.
The story centers on Jacen Solo, a very introspective Jedi Knigt who is seeking to understand how a Jedi can respect all life and seek the path of non-violence while at the same time fighting as a warrior.
Now he is captured and tortured by the Yuzhaan Vong and their mysterious "pet" Vergere, who's goals seem to be a mystery even to her "masters". What follows is a combination of fantastic event, intense action and, above all, a...more

All I remember about this book was that it was really weird. I was never a huge Jacen fan to begin with--give me Anakin any day--and this whole book just irked me. Jacen has bothered me since the beginning of NJO when he goes on his holier-than-thou-I'm-not-using-my-abilities kick. Ugh.
One scene I do vividly remember is Jacen's return to Coruscant after is has been Vong-formed, and the way the author describes the impact this has on him. Also, the opening scene in which we experience his grief...more

The new Jedi order completely outpaces anything in the Starwars genre. This series was Dark, exciting, fast paced, and inspired. The writing was fantastic and the level of philosophy and force history was unparalleled. If your a fan at any level of the Starwars Universe than this series is a must read. It is on my top 5 of all time for a series and I treasured every moment I spent in that time. But beware, this isn't your typical Starwars book, be ready for a level of intensity that you've never...more
Jacen Solo was captured by the Yuuzhan Vong in the book Star by Star. Since then the jury has been out about whether or not he is alive. He is alive, being tortured and broken.
This book is philosophical because that's how the Yuuzhan Vong break Jacen. Does the Force really have two opposite sides to it? How can the Jedi value life when their favorite tool is a weapon of war? By the end of this book, Jacen is transformed. Watching it happen (and seeing what he does in the process) is worthwhile.

I have read over a hundred star wars novels, and this one is my very favorite. Stover takes us on a deep and very disturbing journey into the mind of Jacen Solo as he is tortured by his Yuuzhan Vong captors. This book not only contains superb character development, it also engages in a discussion about the philosophical foundations of the force and introduces fascinating new ideas that really changed the way I thought about star wars. Excellent book, especially for those with an interest in ethi...more
The issue I have with the Force is that the movies made everything so black and white. Give in to your hate and passion and poof, you’re dark side. The Sith have their code about killing all the things and power, and the Jedi have their code about not having sex and only killing all the things when you really, really have to. Both are annoying opposites and their philosophies and drama grow tiresome after a short time, more so when the struggle for every Jedi in the Star Wars universe includes g...more

"Is it what the teacher teaches? Or what the students learns?"
Where is Jacen? Is he alive? Dead? What happened to him after the mission to Myrkyr? Well, if you were curious, if you wanted to learn more about the Force and the mysterious Force presence Luke and Mara felt under the location of the former Jedi Temple, this is the book you want to read.
NOTE: Based on audiobook and novel.
Wow. Just wow.

Previously in New Jedi Order, you may think that Jacen Solo is overly-philosophical. I'll tell you now that Vergere makes him seem like a blubbering baby.
When I read one of Matthew Stover's other books, the novelization of Episode III, I really enjoyed his writing style. It seemed to flow really well, it kept moving at a strong pace, but it didn't always seem rushed. In Traitor, I felt that the pace could have been picked up at times. In this book, I think that Stover really stands out against o...more

"Oh yeah, that Star Wars book you rated so highly every time someone asked your favorite book"
Why did i like this book so much?
Because it was fascinating. It created a back story behind a race, it was a subtle social commentary, there were twists and turns, you felt like part of Jacen, the protagonist.
And its not just a story. It speaks to you about what it means to be human. It has actual growth of a character, none of this one change means a totally different person bullshit. You're inside his...more

Absolutely fantastic book, one of the best of New Jedi Order series, but the one thing, that points this book out is, that it is really clever book, it forces reader to think about it and forces him to challenge himself to how would he react on desperate situations described in boook. This book would be as great even if it werent Star Wars or part of bigger series, maybe that would be even better, because it's message is really huge and transferable to anyone. Absolutely brilliant.
I enjoyed this story for the most part, the story is interesting overall though some sections are grating. The story is largely philosophically driven, and some of it just doesn't make any sense. Who believes that there are two separate sections of the force and not one unified force that can be used for good or for evil. Apparently Jacen does. This is just not believable. The style is also a bit convoluted abstractions being used as subjects and not getting to the actual subject until far into...more
This is my favorite book in the New Jedi Order series. Stover is such a great writer; his prose flows really well. This book is all about Jacen and what happens when he's captured by the Yuuzhan Vong. It is really interesting to read about the Embrace of Pain, and learn a little more Yuuzhan Vong backstory. The exchanges between Vergere and Jacen are captivating and compulsively readable, especially when they talk about the nature of the force. Just a great read.
This is one of my favorite star wars books of all time. This book has some of my favorite lines in all of fiction as well. This is the first star wars book I have ever reread. It is truly a great character study, with a lot of philosophy that isn't just about the force, but about life and our relationship to pain and memory.
“Pain is itself a god: the taskmaster of life. Pain cracks the whip, and all that lives will move. To live is to be a slave to pain.”

If Star by Star is the book that stands out the most as being a different kind of Star Wars story from the NJO arc, Traitor's a pretty close second. Part POW story and part philosophical ruminations, it's really helped by the narrow focus. This is kind of a companion novel to Dark Journey in the sense that Dark Journey is a Jaina story and this is the other twin's story and how he, too, is playing the Yuuzhan Vong avatar thing to his advantage.
What they did to Jacen Solo, (Han Solo's son) in this book is really tragic, and took a lot of guts. The philosophy of Star Wars is challenged to a great extreme in this book and I found it to be a great work of philosophy. It would help to read all the other books in the New Jedi Order, but this book out of all of them is one of the best.
This is the first Star Wars novel I've read in probably... ten years. When the NJO series first came out, I stopped reading with the book immediately preceding this one. I don't know that that was a mistake, but I'm glad I finally got around to Traitor. The prose was good (minus that every time there was a metaphor or simile, the thing was like something "on movie world X," which got a little old), and the philosophy was probably closer to my own preferences than are the now-'true' rules of the...more

this is a superb book - completely different to any other star wars book. it is really profound and introduces completely new viepoints on the force and the jedi - even if there is a light and dark side at all. very intriguing and interesting. There isn't a whole lot of adventure but the profound, deep, stance changing convos between Vergere and Jacen are sooo interesting it doesn't need the action. And when the action does happen it is really epic and exciting. Everything is ultra believable an...more
This book is what Dark Journey should have been for Jaina. It's an in-depth look at Jacen as a character and the incredible transformation he undergoes to become the next hero that this story needs. The descriptions are vivid and the plot is winding and intricate. Getting to know Vergere and Jacen more deeply is a treat. Vergere has always been an enigmatic and complex character, but I used to find Jacen boring and annoying. This gives him, and the reader, an incredibly deep understanding of the...more

He is perhaps best known for his Star Wars novels -- Traitor, Shatterpoint, Revenge of the Sith and Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor.
