Juan Ramon Jimenez (1881-1958) was a Spanish poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956. He mostly wrote erotic poems but critics say that they were in "true" French form. However, in 1914, he gave tribute to his hometown (an Andalusian village of Moguer in the south of Spain) with this beautiful book, Platero and I: An Andalusian Elegy. Originally written in Spanish, it is about a friendship between a man and his donkey. However, just like in any other well-loved children's b

A poet (Juan Ramón Jiménez), a donkey (Platero), a town in the Spanish countryside (Moguer). The author wanders with Platero, eating figs and quinces from the trees, resting in the shade, observing the animals and the people (mostly poor and ragged), and finding beauty everywhere. He describes what he sees in short chapters of rich language. He addresses most of his remarks to Platero, his best friend. Perhaps because the donkey's innocence helps him see innocently.

Ямар ч байсан 2/3 More...

One of the most amazing works of literature that I have read. This isn't the right edition, because modern publishers have sadly edited out about a third of the book. Try to find a copy at a used bookstore or a library.

This is one of the most beautifully written and moving books I have ever read, and is definitely in my top-ten favorite books of all time list. The first time I picked it up I when was my mother gave it to me as a child. I have read it many times over, and I don't think I will ever tire of it. A series of vignettes about life in a small village in Spain, told by a poet whose most beloved companion is his donkey Platero, it is a meditation on love, life, and death, on poverty and injustice and th

Jiménez was born in Moguer, a small town in Andalusia, in 1881 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956. One of his most beloved works is this collection of prose poems about his small silver-colored burro and their experiences in the rural Spain of his time. These 138 small pieces, most less than a page in length, explore the beauty and desolation of the landscape, the tough and simple life of the people, the common experiences, hopes, and tragedies of early 20th century Spain. I wasn't able to appreciate the full body of this work; the edition I borrowed included only excepts. Jimenez's lovable narrator, along with his trusted companion, Platero, can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike. In the preface Jimenez stressed that he wasn't writing with an audience in mind; it just happened that Platero y yo was regarded as children's literature. Though children are capable of holding a high standard of reading as their adult counterparts. Para mi gusto!

I first read this work around 1970 so I have no idea of what edition to recommend. If you do not read Spanish fairly well I would recommend a dual-language version. The original, in Spanish, is achingly beautiful. This work has seemed to evolve into a children's book, which it is not. Translations vary in quality, so if you pick one that does not move you, move on to another.

“...I felt that this book by Juan Ramon Jimenez had accomplished a wonderful thing: it made love a physical reality. The world conspires to make us think that love is only an idea; sometimes it tries to persuade us that love is a fiction, and when we are despondent we may believe that it is. But in reading these pages I was aware of a space beneath the heart and about the size of a walnut that vibrated to the words on the page, a nucleus of intense feeling. To say that I felt happy or sad would

Not a good book for a learner, in spite of very short, self-contained "chapters," but beautifully written, moving, and idiosyncratic.

I read it when I was a teenager and recently read it again. These are the stories that create a good base for good ethics as an adult.

This book gave such a wonderful picture of Spain in that era. The innocence of the children, the beauty of nature and the bonding and love a person has with their animal. I love Platero who is so soft, he feels like he has no bones when you hug him; yet he is so tough, hard-working and strong. The short essays are tremendously sweet and beautifully descriptive.

One of my favorite books.
For some people this book doesn't make any sense because the main character is a donkey and for some people, donkeys don't deserve to be considered objects of love. Sad but true! This book is full of very sweet and sensible moments. Enjoy!

I have loved this book since I was a child, and I treasure my two books about "Silver" (in Swedish). I have now bought this edition in Spanish /English, and hope that some Spanish words will linger in my brain and be there when I need them ;-)

A sweet story about Platero (the donkey) and his owner. The descriptive language is so rich and beautiful that this book is used in Argentina's Grammar schools to teach about 'descriptive writing style'.

Lovely! Poetry in prose...Very sweet and naive, it's the story of a simple man and his pet donkey, Platero. A classic in Spanish Literature!
