This is a beautiful book! I continue to thank my reliable Friend for her astute endorsement. Those who have become familiar with me know that I rarely give a five star rating to a book, but there was no hesitation that this is exactly what Mazur's book merits.

As a rule, I do not seek short stories, but this is certainly atypical of that genre. At first I compared the style to Olive Kitteridge, because many of the characters reappear in succeeding stories and continue to tell their tales. Many ha

These are beautiful stories! I am always impressed by a collection that seems themed (not that it's necessary for my enjoyment) and, here, each story is linked to the next one, if only, for example, by a mention of mangosteen and durian. Loved, loved, loved this book. It was a NYT notable book of the year in 1996, but should have received more acclaim. Taste is so personal, but it's one of the best contemporary story collections I've ever read. Mazur is brilliant. This is a linked collection before linking was in, and focuses mainly on two very different women. It takes you all over the world, and into many different situations, some quite shocking. But Mazur pulls it off without turning you off.

Some passages about loss and lone

Silk is a collection of eleven short stories by Mazur. Several of the stories are about the sexual development of a woman we first meet at age ten, Cass. The stories about Cass are very bold and have the power to shock. She first gets a sense of the notion of sexuality when she watches her aunt, who is enough younger than her mother so she does not see her maternally, enjoying an erotic stimulation from bathing nude from the waist down in a fast flowing stream. I think Mazur shows incredible ...more

Its a bunch of short stories. I like the way this author writes, though it is kind of dark.
