Web Style Guide is not a bad book by any means but there's little reason to read anything over a decade old on web design. While some pieces are timeless–I found the opening chapter on project management to be immensely useful, for instance–there's simply too many references to outdated technology or problems that mar the work's applicability. It would be wiser to consult the web itself or a more recent O'Reilly volume on the same topic.
Unique features to this Guide: This is a nice source for those of us who wonder how traditional print style guidelines apply to the web. Unlike many other books on web style which cover more of the visual aspects of putting web pages/sites together, this guide provides a solid reference on how to communicate your CONTENT to a web audience, in a format that suits the medium.
As an extremely amateur DIY website designer (and I use the term designer loosely!!), I found this guide very helpful--if at places above my head in terms of how to implement their suggestions. I am redesigning my personal site with an easy-to-use WYSYWIG program. Still, I learned tons of do's and don't's and basic principles, and I'm glad I read this one!
Though much of this book isn't necessary for someone building a website for their writing life or their freelance biz, it's an excellent introduction to the essential considerations of building an elegant site. Clear language and excellent graphics. This is a required book in my "Publishing Procedures" course in Pacific Lutheran University's Publishing and Printing Arts Program.
There are plenty of theories explained, like Gestalt psychology, Signal to Noise, Wayfinding and Rules of composition illustrated with very appropriate (info)graphics and photographs.
I really liked the Sidebars - which are kind of features of topics to dive into more thorougly.
Definitely a VERY GOOD READ! :)
