I'd started reading this, on my Kindle, after I finished Clash and before Storm arrived on interlibrary loan. It was, in many ways, a perfect e-book. I didn't find myself wanting to turn back a few pages to re-read things (which is incredibly annoying with a Kindle), it didn't have maps or other things I would like to easily page to and see, and the errors in converting it to an e-book (most notably the failure to insert new paragraphs appropriately) were easy to spot and read correctly.

The first book in the Charleston Trilogy ... followed by FLIRTING WITH DISASTER and WAKING UP IN CHARLESTON. Loved the first book ... also greatly enjoyed the second and third. Wonderful settings and interesting characters. Typical of Woods, her characters are spunky, independent women who make others sit up and take notice. Not perfect, they have tempers, make mistakes, but keep working at life.

Through sheer persistence I finished this audiobook. The narration was not the problem. The storyline was just plain weak.
Dinah, who is a self-professed 'brillant, talented, determined, courageous and top-in-her-field' war correspondent in Afghanistan, has PTSD. Understandable. Her solution? Resign. Good move. And move back to her home town to marry her childhood sweetheart that she hasn't spoken to, much less thought about, in 10 years. WHAT??? From this point on, I couldn't take this...more

So this was my first Sherryl Woods, and it appears I'm going to have to seek out more. It was an impulse buy on Audible, but well worth the price. Since I haven't been through what Dinah had been through, there's no way for me to judge her actions. I can't even imagine going through that nightmare. Much less to have that nightmare cost you the career you worked so hard for. It's funny... since I didn't know anything really about Cord, it was hard to like him at first because we only saw him thro...more
A backup plan or a better plan? I think a better plan? When Dinah Davis is overseas and experiences a carbombing with her cameraman/boyfriend dies and the network thinks it's time for her to step down, she decides to quit and head home.
However she doesn't tell anyone at home that she quit or what really happened. She had made this "pact" with Bobby who she used to be in love with that if they didn't have anyone when they were 25, they would marry each other, so she figures that is what they wil...more

It's finally time for Dinah Davis to go home. The world-weary correspondent wants to settle down with the sweet guy she left behind in South Carolina's Low Country. Instead, she's confronted by his black-sheep brother, and—despite her longing for serenity—sparks fly.
How can she possibly trade her perfectly safe backup plan for a risk-taking guy like Cordell Beaufort after all the dangers she's already faced? But to Dinah's dismay—backup plan or not—her heart has its own ideas.

Like most books by this author, I didn’t care for this first book. I don’t know what it is, but the first book in her series’ are lackluster for me. It didn’t help that I didn’t care for Dinah, I thought she was selfish. Yes, I hated what she went through in her job, but it didn’t help me like her any better. Cord wasn’t that much better for me. He was supposed to be the big bad boy man, but he was more pansy than bad boy. I also didn’t care for the secondary romance. I will probably check out t...more
For some reason I seem to have a different set of standards for one of these novels than others. The novels plot is so slow that I've fallen asleep while reading it (in broad daylight!) And this part if a trilogy? Lord! The author regularly has Dinah mention that an encounter with Cordell ought to be memorable and just so "hot" yet when we finally get there, it's a huge let down. I feel almost cheated. You would hope that the plot could save this book, but even the plot is amazingly dull - Dinah...more
Good quick read if you're looking for a light romance. I read the Kindle edition - warning on that - there are quite a few transcription errors - spaces put into the middle of words all over. Also an entire section where the main characters go dancing and the word dancing has been swapped out for the word appointment in the entire book. "Are you going to tap appointment around the issue?" "What about appointment - wouldn't that be fun?". Otherwise cute book.
Dinah is a world famous war correspondent who suffers from a terrible loss when her camera-man, lover is blown up in a car bomb. After suffering from depression and PTSD her boss wants her to take a break or vacation or move to another assignment but she quits instead and goes home to Charleston to find Bobby. They had had a "back-up plan" 10 years earlier but he is now engaged and his brother Cord wants to protect him. Things go from there.
I thought this book was sweet. At times, a little too sweet. I mean, how many times does Cordell need to refer to Dinah as "sugar"? We get it, you're Southern. Pick another nickname.
And you know what else disturbs me? Dinah is in the full throes of a PTSD episode & Cordell feels concerned, but still cannot help picturing himself humping her. Seriously? That's not mildly disturbing?
And yet, I still gave this book 3 stars. All I can say is that it was a lonely week and this book helped me fall...more

on audio. I liked this book, it was great on audio, I'm not sure it would have held my attention in paperback only because I am really busy. I "read" the entire book while painting a room and driving in my car to run errands. I actually looked forward to it! I really liked the characters and I'm looking forward to spending more time with them in the rest of the series.
This was a fun book. I loved Dinah the main character and how she grew as a character throughout the story. The main male character, Cord, was super sweet and definitely was "hot". The relationship between Dinah and Cord was a bit frustrating at times, but eventually they figured out what was best for both of them. A fun summer read and would have been great for the beach!
I really enjoyed this book (I mean who hasn't read a Woods book that they haven't enjoyed). It was cute but also touched on some real issues at the same time. In an unsual circumstance, Dinah was suffering from PTSD and the loss of someone she loved. It took someone from her past, whom she always had chemistry with to push her in the right direction.. And that direction was getting help, falling in love and marriage!
Dinah Davis, war time correspondent, experiences post traumatic stress disorder and flees to hometown, Charleston. She thinks her back-up plan husband is going to be there, but she falls for his sexy brother, Cord, instead. Plot concerns her ability to get help for her issues with the war experiences, and discovering what is important...her love life or a career.
This is the first title in the Charleston trilogy. Dinah Davis left home 10 years ago to follow her dream as a foreign correspondent. After she has a very bad experience, she quits her job and goes back home - hoping to marry a childhood sweetheart - her backup plan. Instead she ends up spending time with his brother, Cordell Beaufort, and he helps her to heal. Very good story
Cute read. It was interesting to watch Dinah work through all of her problems. I think it was a fairly realistic perspective on the struggles someone might have after a situation like that. I loved her relationship with Cord and the way he pushed her & yet balanced it out with love & affection. Cute couple going on a journey of self-discovery.
I don't normally read general romantic fiction, even if it is set in my home state. A customer as work returned it, though, and as I was bored at the registers, I read the first chapter and was hooked! :) This is well written and completely engaging. I love the characters and she's definitely got the setting down pat.

First in the series. A fairly predictable romance book; was well written but contained formatting errors.
I read the kindle version and there were a lot of compound words with spaces.
Examples: Where do I beg in? I like sun days.
It was quite annoying and interrupted the whole flow of the book.

Not one of my favorites. The title implies a backup plan marriage except the people that made that pact don't see each other until the last few pages of the book. I would love to have seen the interactions of the characters since one of them had become engaged and the other was coming back out of desperation.

With two other careers to her credit before becoming a novelist and four states in which she's lived for extended periods of time, Sherryl Woods has collected friends and memories, along with way too much unnecessary junk.
