Finally, finally! I found it!

Boy, where do I start? Okay, to make things clear: I did see the movie first (it was one of Dreamworks' best ever!) but that didn't neccessarily mean I had expectations for this book based on that. I did check up on it before reading it, so I was fully prepared with the knowledge that it was completely different from the movie when I started. Still, no matter how much I loved the movie, I loved this book too. The characters are likable (as story-book characters, anyw...more

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and eighteen other boys are about to be initiated into their Viking tribe. To do that, every Viking boy must steal a dragon directly from the nest and train it to hunt for him and obey basic commands. Then, on the initiation day months later, they will prove they have what it takes to be a Viking by forcing a beast as heartless and uncooperative as a dragon to obey. It’s the Viking way.

I’ve always wondered why books for young adults...more

Scrawny red-head Hiccup the Useless, then his tiny dragon Toothless, save 400 Vikings of the Hairy Hooligan and MeatHead tribes from Green Death, Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus. Cressida translates, from Norse 222 pages of Viking history PLUS from Dragonese, Toothless' version of the Night Hunt in "How to train your Viking". There we learn the secret of his sore tummy.

I loved every sequel (more?). Pirate curses are especially creative. Only resemblance to film...more

La lettura è certamente p...more

well, it was a very big shock to discover that book and movie only share names and a couple of details.

after the initial shock passed, which took me a couple of chapters, i enjoyed hiccup's first adventure, although the story is very introductory and without much depth. it was funny, anyway, and it reminded me slightly of Wickie, but with dragons, probably it's a viking thing.

the toothless in the book ended up being cute, but nothing like the one in the movie. the same about hiccup. fishlegs on...more

I just loved this book! I saw the movie before reading it, I loved it too, by the way. Just a little warning it has little to do with the original story. Sure the basics are there, but many many things were changed in the movie, maybe they were borrowed from the other installments, I don't know for now since I haven't read them , but I will definitely do. It's one of the few cases where both the movie and the book are great. But honestly speaking I liked the book better. It was absolutely hilari...more

I must admit even though I'm an adult, I still enjoys reading children books. Hiccup series is one of my favorite children books; I like it so much, if I have kids I’ll shove it to their throats. Hiccup was an unusual Hero in every way. Born as Viking, he was skinny, short, plain, and prefers to use his head to think, and not to bump it to his enemies as most of Vikings in his era would do.
Hiccup was the son of his tribe’s Chieftain which instantly (because they’re Viking not some democratic Rom...more

I enjoyed the movie, and when I saw David Tennant was the narrator for the audio book, I had to listen. He did not disappoint, though I found I enjoyed the departures from the source the cartoon took more than the source itself. Still, entertaining.

Filled with the tedium of day-to-day Viking life, I could understand why these boys were made to go after dragons. It was the only thing to lift the mundane awfulness of a land that seemed mired in a bog where all walking involved wading through muck and a lifestyle devoted to senseless violence at all times.

Trampling the noble traditions of being a Viking (they were singers, skilled musicians and gifted boat builders as well as being fearsome warriors), the reader is force-fed the usual stereo...more

the title of this book is how to train your dragon
the author is cressida howell
it has 210pgs
the audience should be everyone because this is a very good book.
the problem in this book is he is a misfit among the vikings. the setting in this book is very helpful in this story because it is remote where dragons can live. the good guy in this book is hiccup the horendus haddock and the antagonist is his dad stoick the vast. he thinks that hiccup is a misfit to. the story goes like this first he has...more

Fantastic! This book had me grinning from ear to ear throughout the entire adventure.

Though the plot is very different from the film adaptation of the same name, the original How to Train your Dragon is clearly the source for the lovely David vs Goliath morals of the film. If anything this is much stronger in the book, since, unlike in the film, Toothless is actually toothless. Little Hiccup and Toothless truly are the tiny heroes of Right over Might. That said, as in the film I was a little sad...more

Pretty cute little book. Yes very different from the movie but as long as you don't expect it to be like the movie then it is a great story of its own.

(view spoiler)[ Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the III is not a "hero" but he is the son of "Hairy Hooligan" Viking chief Stoick the Vast. As part of a viking boys initiation he must get and train a dragon. The boys steal them while the dragons sleep. Snotlout is like a hero and as a cousin of Hiccup's wishes to be chief himself. He gets one of the lar...more

If, like me, you have seen the movie and have decided to pass-up on the book, then you have made a grave error. Why? Because the movie based upon ideas from the current series of books, not upon any in particular. So little of the book is contained in the film that they become two distinct stores about the same hero – Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.

Hiccup is not the archetypal Viking. He is, in fact, a near useless stick insect of a boy who, in this tale must find and train a dragon of his own or...more

Naaah... disinilah dia, bukannya menangkap Naga Monster Mimpi Buruk, Hiccup malah menangkap Naga Lamunan Ompong yang berukuran...more

I liked the book better than the movie, but I liked the audiobook more than either. It really added something to hear David Tennant's take on Toothless's voice and to hear the examples of Dragonese.

I find it annoying that the book contains only two female characters (one a dragon and one a mom whose bra has a larger role in the story than she does), but I find that rather less annoying than the fact that the movie only has two female characters and one is there almost exclusively as a love inter...more

If I could sum this book up in one word: funny. Not just funny, but it was fun to listen to. I really enjoy the film, but I was surprised at the book; it's like the folks at DreamWorks read the blurb on the book, took the character names and made up their own story. Please remember that. The book and the film are COMPLETELY different!

I'm not really sure what to say about the book though. I have a hard time discussing children's lit, because I don't really know much about the ins and outs of the...more

2.5 stars.

After watching the hilarious Dreamworks movie, How To Train Your Dragon, I thought I should check out the books it was based off. And let me tell you, they are vastly different. Not only the plot\storyline, but the characters themselves are quite different, most of all Toothless, whom I absolutely adored in the movie.

My view of the books was probably quite coloured by my love for the movie, thus my enjoyment of the books was far less than curling up with a fluffy blanket and watching t...more

What… what… what is this book?!

This is not the How to Train your Dragon I fell in love with! Where is my Hiccup?! Where is my Toothless?!

Goodreads, how could you not warn me about this… this TRAVESTY of a NOVEL!?

Okay, in all seriousness, I am super disappointed that the plot of the book is so far removed from that of the film.

But this is not the book’s fault.

So I will try to rise above my intense sorrow.

INTENSE. SORROW.

So. Um. I guess this book was okay? Hiccup was surprisingly fatalistic for...more

This is the first book in the How to Train Your Dragon series. At this time there are nine books in this series with the most recent one being the ninth book in the series, How to Steal a Dragon’s Sword. This was a fun and heartfelt read; full of adventure and, of course, dragons.

I read this book with my 5 year old son and he enjoyed it immensely.

In this book we follow Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III as he tries to capture and train a dragon in order pass his test to become part of the Harry Hooli...more

I feel like the fantasy genre has given me dragon burnout. Also, I’d gained the vague impression that this book was about some annoying American kid who finds a dragon and is annoying about it (c/f Percy Jackson).

But no.

This book is about VIKINGS.

Which is awesome!

I may have seal-clapped when it was revealed that the characters live in houses with sod roofs. (I’m a nerd for history and also green roofs. Sue me.)

How To Train Your Dragon is a charming, funny little story about Viking ‘novices’ who...more

According to the single page volume written by Professor Yobbish on the topic of how to train one’s dragon (never fear, it’s in the book), there’s really not much to it. All you need to do is yell at your dragon. Very, very loudly. Yell until those eardrums burst, and until the little blighter is cowering before you in a puddle of its own making.

Hey, if it works for those flustered parents in Kmart shrieking after Jaxxn and...more

*Holds up shield of protection from angry fans* Please don't hate me, but I just couldn't get into it. Don't get me wrong the movie is one of my all time favourite movies, but I read this a long time before the movie was even in the works.

How to Train Your Dragon is you're typical hero book. The wimpy Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third is bullied by the piggish Snotlout. Aside from Fishlegs, Hiccup's the laughing stock of the Hairy Hooligans. It would probably be okay if Hiccup were just another Viking's son, but he's the son of Stoick the Vast, the chief of the Hairy Hooligans, meaning Hiccup is next in line. Not if Snotlout has something to say. Undermining everything Hiccup is, Snotlout thinks of himself as the next chief. So...more

I bought this entire series at Costco because they were inexpensive and because I liked the movie. And sadly this is one of the super rare times when the movie was actually pretty significantly better than the book.

I will continue to read these books and will continue to add them to my goodreads list (because I am nothing if not mildly compulsive), but it's not worth anyone's time for me to continue rating them, so I will just express my feelings for the series as a whole.

These books are great p...more
