Finally, finally! I found it!

Boy, where do I start? Okay, to make things clear: I did see the movie first (it was one of Dreamworks' best ever!) but that didn't neccessarily mean I had expectations for this book based on that. I did check up on it before reading it, so I was fully prepared with the knowledge that it was completely different from the movie when I started. Still, no matter how much I loved the movie, I loved this book too. The characters are likable (as story-book char More...

To do that, every Viking boy must steal a dragon directly from the nest and train it to hunt for him and obey basic commands. Then, on the initiation day months later, they will prove they have what it takes to be a Viking by forcing a beast as heartless and uncooperative as a dragon to obey. It’s the Viking way.

La lettura è ce More...

well, it was a very big shock to discover that book and movie only share names and a couple of details.

after the initial shock passed, which took me a couple of chapters, i enjoyed hiccup's first adventure, although the story is very introductory and without much depth. it was funny, anyway, and it reminded me slightly of Wickie, but with dragons, probably it's a viking thing.

the toothless in the book ended up being cute, but nothing like the one in the movie. the same a More...

I just loved this book! I saw the movie before reading it, I loved it too, by the way. Just a little warning it has little to do with the original story. Sure the basics are there, but many many things were changed in the movie, maybe they were borrowed from the other installments, I don't know for now since I haven't read them , but I will definitely do. It's one of the few cases where both the movie and the book are great. But honestly speaking I liked the book better. It was absolutely hilari More...

I must admit even though I'm an adult, I still enjoys reading children books. Hiccup series is one of my favorite children books; I like it so much, if I have kids I’ll shove it to their throats. Hiccup was an unusual Hero in every way. Born as Viking, he was skinny, short, plain, and prefers to use his head to think, and not to bump it to his enemies as most of Vikings in his era would do.
Hiccup was the son of his tribe’s Chieftain which instantly (because they’re Viking not some democrat More...

I enjoyed the movie, and when I saw David Tennant was the narrator for the audio book, I had to listen. He did not disappoint, though I found I enjoyed the departures from the source the cartoon took more than the source itself. Still, entertaining.

I bought this entire series at Costco because they were inexpensive and because I liked the movie. And sadly this is one of the super rare times when the movie was actually pretty significantly better than the book.

I will continue to read these books and will continue to add them to my goodreads list (because I am nothing if not mildly compulsive), but it's not worth anyone's time for me to continue rating them, so I will just express my feelings for the series as a whole.

So, the How To Train Your Dragon movie is, in my opinion, one of the best and awesomest movies EVER. *squees* It has dragons, a gorgeous soundtrack, hilariously dry humor, and Gerard Butler; what's not to love? :P Seriously, I love it. If not for the fact that I have some self-control and dignity and higher priorities in life than movie-watching, I could watch it every day and not get sick of it for a long, long time.

Anyway, I'd heard of the book before the movie came out, but never More...

As a librarian, I'm sad to admit this but I actually enjoyed the movie much better. Toothless' character was really disappointing because he seemed to have next to no appearance in the story, and except for the very end had no connection with Hiccup at all. I realize that the author was trying to have all of the dragons appear as selfish, thoughtless creatures. But I feel that the story would have more appeal if the two really were to develop a friendship and bond.

The plot did impr More...

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell (translated from Old Norse) was the basis for the movie of the same name released by Dreamworks Studios in 2010. As with most adaptations, the movie is very different from the original text. The book tells the story of the son of a Viking chief ‘Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III’ and his efforts to fit in with his clan. The rules of the clan dictate that as a ‘rite of passage’ into manhood each child must capture and train a dragon and show is mastery of More...

My son and I read "How to Train Your Dragon" together, and I'm not sure which one of us enjoyed it more. It's another one of those books that are nothing at all like the movie. Yes, Hiccup is the son of a great Viking leader and he's nothing but a scrawny pipsqueak but from there most similarities end. Hiccup, and all the other young Vikings are required to capture and train a dragon in order to become full-fledged members of the tribe. If they don't pass the initiation test, they will More...

Hiccup is the son of a Viking chief. He is destined to train a fierce dragon and become a hero...or else be exiled from his tribe.

Being scrawny has major its major disadvantages, however. When Hiccup lands himself a very unusual and untameable dragon, he must resort to unconventional and forbidden methods to train his dragon.

Will Hiccup train his dragon in time to be accepted into his tribe? Meanwhile, an even bigger threat is looming and it's up to Hiccup to embrace his own More...

This was a terrific book on tape. I almost never like a movie half as much as the book that inspired it. It's unheard of for me to ever like a movie better. But, in this case, at least at the start, I did. Once I got into the book and kept listening, I began to separate them in my mind into two entirely different creatures. The stories are so entirely different that it seems to me they simply paid Cressida Cowell for the Vikings with dragon idea. Once I listened to it as a stand alone, wit More...

Fair warning, this review is gonna be written from the perspective of a teenager, not a kid.

Currently Thinking
I did like the book. It was a little simple but it is a kids book. I kept getting caught up in the story at certain points. I hope the author writes something for older kids too because I think she's a fantastic writer.

Good Points
There was a lot of good points I liked how at the end dragons didn't turn out to be that bad. I Wanted to read the book beca More...

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock Ketiga dan Ahli Waris Takhta Suku Hooligan Berbulu. Panjang sekali. Teman-teman vikingnya punya panggilan khusus, Hiccup The Useless (Hiccup Si Tak Berguna).

reading children book always a guilty pleasure, easy to read and no need too much thinking, perfect book to read in a bus during traffic jam.
Anyway i reaaaallly never thought that this novel is 100% different than Dreamworks movie, maybe the same only their name.
Which is make this novel is more interesting because you never know how this novel ended.

Best for older boys - lexile 990

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third isn't exactly your typical Viking. Being a hero doesn't come naturally to him, which is bad news, considering he's the heir to the tribe of Hairy Hooligans. Like the other boys in his tribe, he has to undergo an initiation, which consists of capturing and raising a dragon. Problem is, his dragon, Toothless (whose name sadly is completely accurate) is uncooperative, and if Hiccup fails to train him, which is looking i More...

Hoo!

Pertama kali justru nonton film 3D-nya dulu.

Definitely not what you expect from the movie, and in this case, the movie is much better.

Aside from all the annoying "potty talk," it was humorous and a fun book to read aloud.

Hiccup isn’t the typical Viking (typical as described in the story), instead he educates himself and uses his brain over brawn. Toothless is a smaller than average dragon. Most dragons are the size of a large dog, or smaller. Hiccup has educated himself about dragons, he can even More...

My son enjoyed this read and strongly encouraged me to read it too. I declined initially as I have a huge stack of books in my own reading pile. My opinion was swayed when he showed me a page from the third book in the series, "How to Speak Dragonese." It was about "Big-Boobied Bertha," complete with picture. Let's just say that her name is not an exaggeration. Ok, Mom, it's time to put this series at the top of your stack.

Like many people, I got around to reading this after seeing (and becoming smitten/obsessed with) the Dreamworks movie version. Movie Toothless, and to some extent Hiccup, holds a place in my heart forever. I'm already planning to buy the DVD the day it's released. Naturally, I'm not inclined to adopt the book as devotedly as those who read it before seeing the movie and scorn the film as the scourge of the earth.

I find that whenever I watch a movie before reading a book- like, say More...

Well, this was COMPLETELY different from the film.
Which is an absurd thing to say, I realize, as books almost always are and I didn't realize this was the kick-off for a whole series, so maybe the movie plot is taken from a later book and amalgamated and all.
That being said...I like the movie better.
