My Synopsis: The story revolves around a group of scientists and doctors – Jordan and Jillian are physicians with the CDCP who work under Dr. Landerly; David is a geologist; and Becky is a biologist. Each of them start noticing things around the same time – Jordan and Jillian notice that people are slipping into comas after being hit by what appears to be some sort of stomach flu and not waking up; David finds evidence of a magnetic reversal being responsible for the die-out of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, and further evidence hinting that the same thing has happened about every 60 million years; and Becky finds a small area in the Tennessee backwoods with a large number of mutated frogs. There doesn’t seem to be any connection, until the four coincidentally meet up and pool their resources – what they discover is terrifying. The world is due for another magnetic reversal, and it appears to be starting.

My Thoughts: Some reviewers have mentioned that they found the beginning slow and the ending abrupt. I found the beginning to be fascinating as each group makes their discoveries and tries to figure out what is happening. The middle I found incredibly confusing – there is some really weird stuff going on and nobody seems to understand what is happening. But it is all explained, so don’t let the weirdness scare you off – the idea Scudiere comes up with is both fascinating and really scary, but at the same time incredibly nifty! The ending was a bit abrupt – there is no real discussion about the overall effects of the magnetic reversal upon technology, for instance. It seems to me that the magnetic upheaval would have wreaked havoc upon computer systems and networks, as well as the guidance systems and so forth, but this isn’t mentioned and once the actual snap occurs, everything is business as usual. Nonetheless, I found it a very enjoyable read and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good bio-medical sci-fi thriller. Check it out!(less)

Resonance by A.J. Scudiere
After reading Phoenix by the author I searched out and got several others of her books. She can tell a tale that holds your interest and are fascinating to learn about.
Book starts out with the southern and northern axis, poles and why over time things have needed realigning and why animals grow differently. The magnetism over time have reversed themselves, polarity shift in hot spots around the world.

The premise behind Resonance is simple - the magnetic poles are starting to switch and it is starting to cause frogs to be born deformed, messing up migration patterns and kill people who are in "hotspots" (areas where the reversal has already started).

Scudiere does a great job of creating believable characters and her five main characters are quite strong. We have two young doctors from the Centers for Disease Control and their boss (played by Arte Johnson of Laugh-In fame), a young narcissistic geologist and a young biologist who specializes in frogs.

These five race around the country documenting "hotspots" and trying to figure out why people exposed to them die. As they travel, we learn a lot more about the characters and a romance starts to bloom.

Well, it would start to bloom except for two things: 1) the entire world suddenly shifts causing half of the world's population to die and 2) the guy just somehow can't muster up the guts to tell her how he feels even though everyone knows it except for her for about 6 hours of the audiobook.

In fact, the book just goes into some sort of holding pattern about two-thirds of the way through. The explanation behind the mass deaths is discovered (because why would magnetic reversals kill people? If it so bad than an MRI would be fatality-inducing) and there is a Twilight Zone-esque ending that is fairly clever but takes too long to resolve.

What is not discussed is the concept of the world still running along like normal even though half of the population has died. No mass chaos. No nuclear power plants overloading. No rogue nations deciding "Hey! It's the end of the world so let's go ahead and nuke such-and-such country!" Deliveries are still made, the phones still work, bureaucrats are still filing forms and accountants are still watching the bottom line. Having never seen the end of the world, I can only assume that it would be less like a Midwestern blizzard and more like Hurricane Katrina when it hit New Orleans and the social fabric was torn to pieces.

This audiobook is billed as an "AudioMovie" because it has special effects and multiple actors reading the different parts, much like an old-fashioned radio show. Several audiobook producers are using this format and it can be a superior way to tell a story. The actors did a great job, especially Arte Johnson who stole every scene he was in with his role as the elderly brilliant but cranky CDC administrator.The special effects were relatively rare and did not intrude as can happen with some companies that have used this format.

This was a book in serious need of a thorough editing. Three or four hours could have been removed from this book without hurting it. Repeated conversations abound and the ending with a twist just lingered until it eventually lost its punch.

I received 3 books form this author. As a self professed "book cover snob", I set the books aside. The cover just didn't grab me. After reviewing several books that I didn't care for, I was looking for a change of pace and picked up Resonance.

Review:
I am a fan of science fiction and end-of-the-world theories, therefore, when I saw the giveaway for this book on LibraryThing I knew I had to enter. After the first two chapters I didn't want to put the eBook down. What began as a slow-paced introduction to the characters and their strange discoveries turned into a fast-paced page-turner. A.J. Scudiere has a way with making the world and characters within this book come to life. I felt like I was part of the action, trying to figure out why everything was happening and how the pole reversal would effect me; I love when a book makes me feel "included" in some way. Being a microbiologist I definitely appreciated the science behind the pole reversal, and I think the author did a great job setting up the plot and the dialogue, especially the scientific parts which were easier to understand than in other books of the genre. Overall, I thought the book was great, and it had everything I wanted in an end-of-the-world scenario. The only thing that bothered me was the snappiness of the ending which seemed a little rushed, but all of the loose ends seemed to be tied up and accounted for. I recommend this book to science fiction lovers and people who want to read about world ending scenarios that doesn't involve zombies, aliens, or Mayan prophesies.

I found this book scientifically fascinating. It was divide up into 27

It also showed that mother earth is an unpredictable and uncontrollable force that we have to respect. I do not think the author wrote this to give a explanation of the Mayan 2012 doomsday theory. If anything it does give another hypothesis on how the dinosaur may have gone extinct.

Since that was no real main character, the reader is given several options to choose from to like, dislike and possibly to relate to. In the beginning each person in the book is doing research in different scientific fields, such as biology, geology and disease control. Sometimes this array of scientists was difficult to keep track of, I actually found it helpful to list them on a sheet of paper, just in case I forgot who was who. I found that I could associate with some personality tract of each character and I became engrossed in the events they all had to experience. Although the best minds were at work, the event was not fully understood or somehow stopped. After the polar shift has occurred there are even more questions and events to be analyzed. In my opinion, one of the most shocking of these questions was why were just a few people seem to be going into a coma like state and then wake up several hours later describing a visit to second earthlike place. Also later in the book two characters have to make a moral decision which to me was a difficult dilemma, but one that had to be done.

This book had made science fun and interesting. It is a quick read with likable characters. I would recommend it to adult and even to younger advanced readers, especially for science buffs and doomsday theory enthusiasts.

You can't escape it, the world isn't waiting for you to adjust. It's going to follow it's course, and give itself the biggest face life its had since T-Rex ruled the world.

Jillian, Jordan, David, and Becky all come from radically different backgrounds, all with PhDs in their own fields. All four of them come to the realization something is definitely wrong in the world today. Jillian and Jordan, both working with the CDC, learn about a new disease that is killing people by the droves with no rhyme or reason. David learns the rocks he loves are not quite making sense. The way the geologists are labeling them is completely messed up. Becky is finding six legged frogs in her backyard and birds that are flying to the wrong places at the wrong times.

None of these phenomenon seem to relate to each other at all, until the four meet up unexpectedly in a small town where people dying and the world seems to have changed its mind about a few laws it once had. They learn the polarities of the earth are changing. North is now south; south is now north, but this only seems to be happening in bubbles, and the bubbles are growing larger. Someone send St. Nick a change of address card and pray he survives.

It took me a little while to get into this book. The storyline seemed to crawl at the beginning. The set up may have taken a little longer than necessary, but the middle and ending of the book were worth trudging through the beginning for. The plot was incredibly creepy. The end of the world has been in the forefront of many people's minds lately. This is a new twist on one scenario of the demise of the world. This book takes you for a fool a couple of times, just when you think things are finished, another curve ball has been pitched your way, and you may need to step back in order from being hit by the ball. Once you hit the midway point, do not let your guard down, or you may miss something important.

The characters in the book are a bit on the "unreal" side at times, but that could be because I don't usually find myself surrounded by geniuses on a regular basis and therefore have no basis on how they would behave. I guess someone truly brilliant would be able to think things through and come up with the brilliance that occurs. The characters are lovable though. There was a character that only lasted a chapter or two that I found myself mourning when he passed. There are meaningful layers to each of these characters that make you want to slap them or hug them, depending on the situation.

If you can handle the creepiness of the possible end of the world, pick this book up and give it a good chance. The story may start off slow, but you will be tightening your seat belt before it is all said and done.

I found Resonance to be a fast paced read. It felt just like many of the recent disaster movies that have been released. The characters were well fleshed out. Some you hated, some you loved and some you loved to hate. I thought the story also had the perfect mesh of speculative science combined with current knowledge.

Still, there were a couple of things that got to me the more I think about it. If you don't want spoilers you should skip down to the end now.

When I received this book in the mail, I was wondering why someone was sending me a brick.This is a large and heavy book.It is an around 480 pages trade-sized novel.The price really amazed me when I saw it.It is only $9.99.I would have thought a book this size would have been $15 or $16 at least.

The first half follows 3 stories.A biologist finds mutated frogs and other animals acting strangely. A geologist finds areas where the magnetic field is reversed. Two doctors from the CDC start finding people dying from what seems to be the flu when they should not be dying.As the novel continues, their stories start to converge. Even working together, they are barely able to stay ahead of the strange occurences. The real question will be what will they do if bigger changes happen.

The story is interesting and does give the reader plenty to think about when reading it.Most of the characters are easy to like.The only character who isn't easily likeable is designed that way.He even admits he is a jerk. I found myself starting to like him despite himself.I would have liked some closure between the two doctors about their feelings.While it seemed obvious to me and most of the characters,Jordan and Jilly did not seem aware of it.

There are parts that I troubled me.Some of the attitudes toward the south or small cities seemed a little too stereotypical.Truthfully I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be the characters attitude or the prejudice of the author coming through.Some of the division of the people in the second half didn't make that much sense to me.I would have liked either a little more explanation or at least a better division than just jobs.Geography and size of the city can make a huge difference in two people who both have the same job.

Overall a nice and engaging story that is well worth checking out. (less)

I had high hopes for this book based on the cover preview, but it didn't completely live up to my hope. I love the premise: the pole are shifting and people are getting sick. It seemed very realistic, but then something happened it became a bit too hokey for me to swallow. What became the most difficult for me to appreciate was when characters started to die, but then were talking and interacting in the next chapter. Resonance is a modern-day science fiction story set in the United States. The main characters are one flavor of scientist or another; Becky is our biologist with a special interest in amphibians, David is our rock licker (geologist), and Jillian and Jordan are the CDC medical doctors. I LOVE natural disaster type stories. I love movies like The Day After Tomorrow and Outbreak. Movies and books that are fiction but based on things that could happen, and might. These things are more terrifying then even my beloved Zombies, because they are plausible. So Resonance, is right up there with those stories in my views.

The earth's magnetic poles are shifting. There are magnetic hotspots all over the world. People are dying and no one knows why. Various wildlife are affected in different ways by all this shifting going on. The story itself is fascinating, but the way it is put together is awkward. Interesting theme to this book: the Earths magnetic poles are swapping and what it means to us and the planet. Odd things happening with frogs, birds and other creatures while humans appear to be getting sick. The two main characters work for the CDCP and must figure out what is happening and what can be done about it. Apparently, this is based on fact since we are due a pole swapping anytime. The plot shifts between the hotspots as each of the characters works to determine the cause of the strange occurences. Eventually their stories merge and it appears the mystery of what has been happening is solved. But no, the author throws us a curve and we get a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming.

I enjoy my science fiction intertwined with science fact, and this story does not disappoint. The plot is filled with interesting science both real and hypothetical. I found the detailed analysis to be both intelligent and thought-provoking, but never so complicated that the reader would be lost in the science. While I consider this mainly science fiction, it is a mix of genres: part mystery, thriller and suspense with a little romance all in an apocalyptic setting.

I listened to the audio version and, at over 16 hours, at times it felt a little long. (But that’s my opinion. I find 12 to 14 hours to be optimal for most books.) The audio was easy to follow once I got all the characters and places straight in my mind. The production was an AudioMovie, which was a little different from most audiobooks available today.

What is an Audiomovie? Instead of one narrator, it contains a complete cast with a different actor for each character. It also has a soundtrack with music and sound effects. For example, a phone would ring and the listener hears the ringing in the background; the voice of the caller would have that tinny telephone sound. If someone was hammering, we would hear a pounding sound effect. Some scenes had background music which faded in and out usually at the beginning or end of a chapter.

What did I think of the AudioMovie? It was quite different, but once I became acclimated to the production it was an engaging experience. I enjoyed the full cast narration. One of my pet peeves is a narrator that can’t perform the voice of the opposite sex. I would rather hear multiple actors, especially when there are a lot of characters. The sound effects were distracting at first but after a few hours I wasn’t started when I heard a ring or a bang in the background and they became a part of the story. The music was a little loud and made me think of the old daytime soap operas; for me music wasn’t necessary.

Overall a good piece of speculative fiction with interesting characters that will appeal to a wide range of readers. Those who enjoy Crichton-like thrillers should definitely give this a try. (less)

A Review of AJ Scudiere's “Resonance” - 4 stars

I found the premise very interesting but never really fully explained as to why shifting the magnetic poles would cause animals to go into a coma and potentially die. If that was the case then wouldn't we see strange results from analysis of people in MRI machines or from the people who use NMR to do research? We don't see people falling asleep in the MRI (that often), so this theory, while interesting does not seem that plausible. There are also those people, two of the protagonists, Jillian and David who can fall into a coma in one world, and wake up in another. Is an interesting plot-line, but goes a bit into the supernatural, why should they be able to do wake up in either time line when not many other people can?

Also, the idea that this phenomena killed off, or placed the dinosaurs on another earth is interesting, so if birds are what evolved from our dinosaurs, what happened on the other side? This question along with why Jillian and David are“special” and a lot of other questions go unanswered, they are just either vaguely speculated or ignored.

OK, now to suspense. A.J. Scudiere is a suspense writer. Suspense should be able to keep you awake at night and you have to force yourself to put down the book. There were many nights where when reading this book I fell asleep, maybe it was all the talking about comas. Really there is no way to truly be suspenseful with this story. Yes, it is a cataclysmic change to the world, but it is not done with explosions or tidal-waves, but with people and animals falling into comas and possibly dying.

Hopefully, her later works are more suspenseful, because she does market herself as a suspense author, and is definitely genre-bending. I really liked the originality of the story and still gave this 4 stars even though I am critical of the science and a few other aspects, I love to see originality in writing.(less)

With the Mayan apocalyptic dateline approaching, I expected so see many more books and movies about the end of the world, but they are only trickling out, it seems. This is one on the market that is worth the read.

In this book, the shifting of the magnetic poles has changed life on Earth and leaves a bevy of main characters trying to figure out just what's going on.

I recently read Resonance by A.J. Scudiere. It's a mystery novel where scientists, geologists, and biologists must save the world. A polar shift begins, and these professionals must corroborate what's taking place. People are dying, animals are mutating, and all kinds of crazy things are happening.

I'm actually really surprised that A.J.Scudiere is such an underrated author because she writes amazing books. God's Eye was one of my favourite reads of 2012, and Resonance is not that far behind.

This is a disaster scenario book, very intense, full of interesting multifaceted characters who end up racing together to save humanity facing an apocalyptic catastrophe - global reversing of polarity.

I'm not sure how this book got on my wish list, but I read it just because it was a free loner. I'm also not sure why I kept reading it; I dislike modern novels where the point of view keeps shifting from character to character but they are all uniformly sarcastic and angry in their thoughts. Another oddity was the book was 70% through before something interesting happened. Can't say I'd recommend sticking with it, even though it had a unique idea that would be fun to build on. Ah, well.

The earth's magnetic field is reversing. In little pockets of geography, north is south and south is north. Unfortunately, this is affecting the animals and people in a very bad way. Frogs are mutating, people are dying. I loved the characters in this book, Scudiere is very good at making you like people in the story. A good medical/end of days thriller. While it went a little sci-fi at the end, which didn't really match the rest of the story, it was very action packed and a bit romantic.

I received this book for free from the Goodreads first-read giveaway. This book is a real roller-coaster ride. Slow at the start; scares the hell out of you in the middle, and then slows down at the end. A lot or unanswered questions at the end but I thought this book was well worth reading. At 484 pages you need to bring a lunch ;)
