At the beginning of Volume 19, I read in a painful silence.

At the beginning of Volume 20, I shouted, "Bad ass!" at the book. Rin standing alone in the dark tunnel, a candle in her mouth illuminating her, ready to set her knives ablaze and confront the men who are holding Manji captive? Yeah, excuse me while I yell that again.

That felt good.

This volume gives you the conflicting feelings of a story arc still not being over, while still having some novel twists left in it. We're rescuing Manji, put

The art is stronger than usual in this volume, particularly in the first scenes following Rin. A few too many people-showing-up-at-the-right time (or wrong people at the wrong time, depending on how you look at it) moments for my taste. And again, I'm not too fond of how drawn out this arc has become. But the art is unquestionably beautiful and we're finally escalating toward payoff.

If you can ignore the gore, this is a really interesting series. I definitely would not recommend it to everyone, though.

Hiroaki Samura (沙村 広明) is a Japanese writer/illustrator and creator of Blade of the Immortal, as well as several other short works. He has also done various illustrations for magazines and ero guro work. He has an ero guro book out that is mostly a compilation of some of the work he has created.
