His generosity is legendary. He has a team of flying reindeer, hordes of industrious helpers, and the love of boys and girls around the world. ok i picked this book up because it was in the horror section at Borders a few years ago. Cover looked interesting and the description intrigured me. However, after startingto ead the book I realized it was more then horror, it was a nightmare, i continued to read chapter after chapoter being more amazed, intrigued, repulsed and stunned by the page. I have to confess I never finished this book, it was just way to out there for me. I wont give it away, but there are limits to what I want to think...more
Oh my bob. This is one nasty story. It ain't Mommy kissing Santa, and it ain't just kissing. [return][return]In the introduction, David G Hartwell (I have no idea who he is) pays homage to Devearaux's foray into "Spatterpunk," a literary term I had never encountered before. Anyway, Hartwell compares this book to a piece of art done by Wallace Wood called "The Loss of Innocence in Disneyland," where all the characters are having sex and Dumbo is flying overhead shitting on all of them. Ick. But,...more
(From Amazon) "In the opening lines of Santa Steps Out: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups, we learn that God the Father had to "cut His vacation short" and is in a "towering rage" about it. It appears that while the archangel Michael was running things, the world got pretty screwed up. "Michael...you know that Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are never to cross paths. It's one of our Father's most solemn injunctions." Ah, that Tooth Fairy. She's also got her hooks into the Easter Bunny.

What if the Santa Claus you think you know wasn't really Santa? For that matter, if the Santa that Santa knows wasn't really Santa?
In Santa Steps Out by Robert Devereaux, we are introduced to a world where the Christian angels, mythological figure (like Santa and the Easter Bunny), and even God himself were once other mythological being, but had their identities erased and were cast in new roles by the current being who calls himself God. This isn't a spoiler, You're told as much in the very beg...more

This novel is almost sacrilegious for perverting the child aspects of major holidays. In short, you shouldn't expect to think of any major holiday the same after reading this book. Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy are all key figures in this modern and very adult view of holiday figures.
The story focuses around Santa Claus who one year happens to spy the Tooth Fairy and who is then quickly seduced by her. Of course, Mrs. Claus finds out and is not too pleased by it. The rest of...more

3 AND 1/2 STARS
While this would have worked better as a novella, I'm guessing readers will either love it or hate it. Even with the character's mythology to better flesh out the story and their background, it still felt like it overstayed its welcom. However, if you buy into the concept and world Devereaux has created, you'll have a great time. Unfortunately, if you can't get past the Easter Bunny as a sex fiend out to take advantage of your average house cat, you might be quite repulsed and to...more

Wow! I will never look at Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus or the Easter Bunny the same after reading this! I feel so perverse for even continuing to read this. Especially that this book is based on the happiest time of the year and the most jolly and beloved fairy tale of all.. Santa Claus! Or shall I call him Dirty Santa!!I still continued to read on of course it was like eating chocolate. You know it’s bad for you but you keep wanting a little more. What do you get when you take the myths of Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny, turn them on their heads, and add in a little bit of naughtiness and perversity? If you said Santa Steps Out: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups then you would be correct.
This story is both shocking and titillating, yet funny and reflective. I can't say I found it to be a super read. Perhaps it's because I've read too many great books lately (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, Hunger Games trilogy) to feel...more

I Want To See This In Claymation
This book IS over the top, and will easily offend those who offend easily. That’s fine. But the pleasures of this book don’t stop at its provocative nature. It’s also a genuinely creative, nigh brilliant, meditation on human sexual/romantic relationships, through a lens of cunning myth and trounced commercial archetypes. At the heart of the book, even at its most horrifying, is a nearly spiritual regard for the place of the carnal in our lives, and the spiritual...more

There is a quote that is used in this book:
"Everything is Sacred, and Nothing is Sacred."
This phrase is quite possibly the best to use when summing up this novel. The illicit affair between Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy is a modern day fable that runs laps around the trashiest Harlequin Romance novel.
I recently heard of the existence of a sequel, Santa Claus Conquers the Homophobes, and it is one that I will be definately picking up!!

There are stories that irreverently spoof beloved childhood figures and then there's SANTA STEPS OUT, a novel which finds perverse, maniacal pleasure in taking everything you held sacred as a kid and turning it into something obscene, terrible, and very, very funny.
Devereaux gives us a tale in which Santa Claus carries on a decades-long affair with the Tooth Fairy (their initial hook-up is a scream, erotic and humorous and just plain wrong), their illicit trysts usually coinciding with his annua...more

Definitely one of the oddest books I've read. This book (which is categorized in the Horror genre) is about a lusty Santa Claus who carries on a highly libidinous affair with the Tooth Fairy. And to complicate things, Santa's exploits are making the Easter Bunny crazy with jealousy. The Easter Bunny is, of course, a giant rabbit with the ability to become invisible but his only paramour is a self-made model he's named Petunia, made from wire mesh and bunny excrement. Oh, and of course Mrs. Claus...more
Robert Devereaux, Santa Steps Out (Leisure, 1998)
My reverence of Robert Devereaux's first novel, Deadweight, borders on the worshipful. After recently re-reviewing it, both one of my best friends and Devereaux himself e-mailed me and told me exactly the same thing: to get my hands on Santa Steps Out pronto. So I did (well, a little less pronto than I should have). They were both absolutely correct.
Make no mistake, this book will offend you. Any book containing scenes where Santa Claus cheats on...more

Weird, weird, weird book. Strange! Vulgar, but not much story. Great characters.
If you want to know why the Easter Bunny has no genitals, where the coins come from the Tooth Fairy trades for teeth or how Santa spends his days when not delivering presents with Christmas, you may want to read this book. But it's fairly graphic about the sex (much sex) and gore (not very much). It's no horror book though, but quite dark, strange and in a weird way, emotional. 2.5 stars

This was a really fun book. I picked it up thinking it'd be a horror story, given the title, but it couldn't have been farther from the mark. The story is about Santa Claus (yes, THE Santa Claus) and an illicit affair he has with the Tooth Fairy (!!) of all people.
The author goes into great detail about their sexual escapades while Santa's delivering presents on Christmas Eve ~ let me just say this is NOT the same Jolly Old Elf from your childhood! Be prepared to shake up everything you once he...more

I found this about 3-4 Christmas seasons ago. The holiday season would come and go, and I would forget about it. So, with four days before Christmas, I finished this "Fairy Tale for Grown-ups" as it states on the cover. That'a an understatement...this outrageous, perverse, take on our sacred childhood figures is not right. But, then again why was I smiling, chuckling to myself as i read it? Because, it is a twisted, humorous, frolic, tale...with Santa, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny...chas...more
This book was outrageously obscene, a nightmare in print, and yet I couldn't stop reading it, loved it! I had never heard of Robert Devereaux before reading this book, impressive prose and use of vocabulary. Kudos to him for having the guts to tell such an offensive story in which Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy carry on a lascivious affair for over three-and-twenty years whilst the voyeuristic Easter Bunny observes, plotting to have his way with Mrs. Claus. Santa Steps Out is a story I won't so...more
