I didn't finish this book because of how it began. I was perfectly fine with it all, excited about the story and such, then Mr. Thor goes off about the LDS church on pages 71 through 78. While it is doubtful that he meant to or not, but I felt like he was taking some jabs at the LDS church. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I can say that he doesn't have his facts exactly straight. I've read other books where they've mentioned the LDS Church and the authors are...more

The first in the Scot Harvath series. I have been told this is the poorest of the batch—but should be read first for establishing character etc. Too late! My previous experience with Thor was Harvath #7 in the series. I wasn’t paying attention when Sharon gave me a bag of mercy books so I started backwards. Now I can see how his writing improved because “Lions of Lucerne” is clunky and a little more than slightly preposterous. But . . . and here’s the rub . . . his testosterone level i...more

I read this for the same reason I've read some other books--it tied-in with a place I visited on vacation. When I got the opportunity to travel to Switzerland, I did some searching for fictional books and found this typical airport thriller that had my hotel's city right in the title! That part was really fun, as the name-dropping for landmarks included all sorts of things I saw myself. No question about it, that was a lot of fun for me.
But objectively, this is yet another Tom Clancy ...more

wanted to read the Brad Thor book on the best seller list and found that this book is first in a group (Tom Clancey-like) of thrillers with the same main character. Since the first book "sets" the character I decided to read it first and I wasn't disappointed. A funny sideline is that - being set in the DeerValley/Park City area a Mormon family became part of the plot. The descriptions of the Mormon relegion was really hilarious to a Mormon. Just when I decided the author had rese...more

Cussler Fans, Thriller fans,
I love thrillers, especially spy thrillers but this offering was a great disappointment.
The plot has more "coincidences" than you would hear about at a Deja Vu Society meeting. Scott Harvath, Secret Service superman, just happens to have a disguise in his safety deposit box given to him, unasked, by a grateful friend. He just happens to have a good friend in Interlaken, Switzerland who just happens to be renovating her hotel so he can stay there unnoticed. A friendly Whi...more

Another rogue agent book - this time he's Secret Service. But the author didn't do his homework about Presidential code names: family members all have names starting with the same letter; his President goes by Hat Trick, and his daughter goes by Goldilocks. Sitting presidential family is "Renegade," "Renaissance," "Radiance," and "Rosebud." Former presidential family were "Tumbler," "Tempo," "Turquoise" and "Twinkle."...more

OK, I originally stopped reading this b/c of the f-words. THe book seemed to have a lot. But then I tried it again, this time on CD. There were only like 5 instead of 25, something I can handle but if you can't then don't read it. I loved listening to it on CD!! That will be my new thing. I cleaned my whole bedroom while "reading" the entire book! Anyway, the story was pretty good, more action/spy stuff. Mostly takes place in Europe which I always like. It's the first of the Scot Harv...more

The first in the Scot Harvath series by Thor. The series is the standard CIA (Secret Service) spy action thriller where the good guy always gets the head shot and the bad guy is thwarted at the last possible moment. But despite that Thor's face paced story lines make for a great read. You have to love Scot Harvath, the hero of the series, a Secret Service agent who just wants to do his job and god forbid you get in his way. I have read three of the series in one week so they certainly have held ...more

Brad Thor is one of my favorite authors. His books are exciting and fast paced, and his main character, Scot Harvath, is wonderful. However, in this book, the various scenes are a little bit over the top in terms of believability. Too many people are trying to kill him, and they number among them world class assasins, and yet he manages to elude or dispense with them throughout the novel.
The good part is that Scot remains alive, and will be willing and able to participate in Thor's n...more

This author really "gets" the current political clime vis-a-vis certain "religions of peace" and their suicidal war against western civilization. Thor's no-holds-barred anti-PC books are excellent if you like a quick paced taught thriller that you won't be able to put down until you've finished reading. "Lions of Lucerne" is the book that started it all, and it's always fun to crack open the next Scott Harvath novel because I know I'll be in for a great ride!

Pretty decent first book for Brad Thor. Another secret Service agent book, what else do I read? First part of book takes place in Park City Utah. Some interesting comments on "The Church of Latter-day Saints", for example church lasts almost 5 hours (seems like it sometimes),I'm sure there were more, but nothing too bad. The bad guys in this book could not shoot straight and it did drag a bit, I thought maybe he could have tightned the story line just a bit and it would have been b...more

I read this based on a recomendation but was somewhat disappointed. I generally love this type of book (Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn) but this was very inconsistent. Parts were good and things seemed to be coming together but then the story would go off track. I found this to be the case with all of his books. Good ideas that just didn't quite work.

These books are really hard to put down. They have great plots and characters. My only complaint is that there is objectionable content, especially the use of the "f" word. It makes me feel that I shouldn't be reading these, but they're really compelling stories!! If the language was cleaned up I'd give them 4 or 5 stars easily.

This series has the same premise as the Vince Flynn books, but lacks in readability. Thor's writing is elementary in nature and I found myself thinking, "I'm not in 1st grade, why are you writing like I am." I was so annoyed with his style that I stopped reading the series. Scot Harvath also isn't nearlly as BA as Mitch Rapp.

Of all Harvaths books, this is my least favorite but should probably be read first. While the books are independantly great, they do build on each other to some degree. He always gives plenty of detail to make it unecessary to have read the prequal/s though.

A disclaimer: This book was HORRIBLY written. Really laughable in parts.
However, I was so in the mood for a book like this that I didn't mind all that much. It features a member of the secret service who is in charge of protecting the U.S. president during a skiing vacation in Park City, Utah. The president gets kidnapped and intrigue and action ensue.

Very Good; Continuing character: Scot Harvath (first in series); after the President is kidnapped during a ski trip, the Secret Srvice agent in charge works to discover who is behind it and where he is; gets a little convoluted and a few too many twists
