**This review is for the abridged audio version of the Terry Brooks novelization**
I should start by saying that as a previously lifelong fan of Star Wars who no longer called herself a fan after the brutal prequel trilogy, I was pretty convinced I wasn't going to like the audio book either. That being said, a 3-star rating for Phantom Menace really says something for Terry Brooks' novelization. I got more from the story than I did the movie, for sure.

This book was so good, although it was very long. It had all the character development that the movie lacked. It gave you a lot of insight into Anakin's (sp?) character as well as the queen's. And it explored a lot of deeper questions that the movie only grazed on. I was really disappointed when he didn't write books for the other two movies in the series as well. I was really looking forward to reading them.

any Star Wars fan
As someone who enjoys a good read, I have to say the book wasn't that great. But as someone who loves Star Wars, it did add a few interesting details to the life of Anaking Skywalker that you can really find ironic and even a little twisted. And since it is based on the original story boards written by George Lucas, you can trust that nothing in the book conflicts with anything in the movie, unlike others.

It's Terry Brooks.
On the other hand, it's Star Wars.
But it's Episode I.
However, at least it's not Episode II.
The existence of this book fills me with ambivalent thoughts. On the whole, it's a competent novelization that adds a bit to the movie experience. It could have been worse. It also could have been better.
Maybe that should just be the official motto for the prequel trilogy.

I have to preface this one by stating that the new trilogy of prequel films damn near completely destroyed my enjoyment of Star Wars. I really don't even call myself a fan anymore, however I do still enjoy some aspects of the Star Wars universe. That said, I can say in all honesty that I enjoyed Mr. Brooks' novelization of episode one much, much more than the film itself.

Watch the movie and you have just about read the book. A few new items but the main story is the same.
