I love Splat so much that I considered buying this book. As I am of limited funds--in fact, my NAME might as well be Limited Funds, except for the inconvenience of changing my initials--I decided to look at it in the library. Repeatedly. If either of my nieces goes in for motherhood, though, the kids are getting this book.

It's Splat the Cat's first day of Cat School. His tail "wiggled wildly with worry." Poor Splat just does not want to go. He makes up excuses, he clings to the door and the gate. He puts his pet mouse, Seymour, into his lunchbox because he needs a friend. But eventually Mom drags him to school where he meets his teacher, Mrs. Wimpydimple, and his classmates. Splat does not understand all that Mrs. Wimpydimple is telling the class. He wants to know why cats chase mice, and all Mrs. Wimpydimple wil...more
Splat the Cat is a very interesting story for children 3-4 years old. Splat does not want to go to school and uses many excuses to avoid going to school. Failing to convince his Mum, Splat takes his pet mouse, Seymour, in his lunch box. Splat makes lots of friends at school and learns a few about cats, until he is informed that Cats chase mice. Lunch time approaches and out comes Seymour and scares away all the cats.

At lunch time to everyone’s surprise they find out splat has a pet mouse. In the end the mouse saves the day and the kittens love mice. This book can really relate to children. To start it is a kitten’s first day of school and he was scared. A lot of children are scared about going to their first day of school. Some kids may ha...more
It's Splat's first day of school and he's not so excited. He takes his pet mouse Seymour to school with him just in case he doesn't make any friends.
The teacher, Mrs. Wimpydimple welcomes all the students to school and begins the days lesson by teaching them why cats are so wonderful. At lunchtime when Splat lets Seymour out of his lunchbox the other cats begin to chase the mouse. Mrs. Wimpydimple quickly puts a stop to that. Splat the Cat is quite anxious about his first day of school. After his mother drags him to school, Splat learns about what cats do and finds out that he is amazing. When his pet mouse, Seymour, escapes from his lunchbox, Splat teaches his friends that "cats don't chase mice." A charming first day of school book that young listeners will relate to and find funny. I also enjoyed the pictures and texture of Splat's fur.

At his first day of cat school, Splat’s it is taught that cats are great, drink milk, and chase mice. The class erupts when Splat’s pet mouse escapes, but the mouse becomes the hero in the end because he helps them with their milk problem. I listened to this on Playaway and it is very kinetic listening experience due to the snazzy music, use of sound effects, and the narrator’s overall enthusiasm. Although this is a very fun listening experience, I would suggest that it would be beneficial for c...more

I liked the texture of Splat and the illustrations best of all. The story didn't have enough substance for my taste. It was great to see the chance in hearts by all the cats in the class towards the mouse though. It was an okay book for younger children because Splat is cute.

I love Splat! This is the first of Rob Scotton's "Splat" series and definitely one of the best. Splat the Cat is worried about his first day of school and tries everything he can so that his mother won't make him go. Once at school, he makes new friends and learns valuable lessons. He decided that school wasn't so bad afterall. I think that this is a great book to read on the first day of school so that the kids know that it is okay to be worried but that everything will turn out great. Splat is...more

This book is so cute! The illustrations were hilarious, even to an adult. The story being told in the book was definitely a true story that is applicable to many young children. It was about Splat's first day at school. Splat was nervous about his first day school and tried everything to try to be able to stay home. Once he got to school, though, he saw that it was not that bad, and he actually enjoyed himself. I think this book is definitely a good book for children who are going to be starting...more
This is one of the most adorable story and illustrations that I've seen in a LONG time. Rob Scotton's illustrations of the cats, their facial expressions, and positions are laugh out loud! I wish Splat the cat was around when my kids were young. I still collect these stories and when a new one is released, I encourage my kids, even though they're in their teens, to look at it. I watch them and see the smiles on their faces. I read them to my students at school and they also adore the pictures. A...more

“‘If I hide from the day, maybe it’ll go away, he thought.”
Splat the Cat has an extreme case of first-day-of-Cat-School nerves. He lays wide awake with his tail wiggling “wildly with worry”. After a sleepless night, he tries to hide from the new day, but his mom rousts him with her “Time to get up.”
Splat tries every trick/excuse/rationale in the book to get his mom to let him stay home, but his mom has an answer for everything. A sample:

It’s the first day of Cat School, and Splat the Cat doesn’t want to go.
I enjoyed the “textured” look of the illustrations that seemed to make Spat’s fur bristle off the page. Despite a few funny parts, the storyline was rather weak and predictable (youngster fears first day of school; has fun at school; decides school isn’t so bad after all.)
Be aware that Splat contains several references to cats drinking milk. In reality, cow’s milk can make kittens and cats ill.

Almost every child is worried about going to school on the first day. We all can relate to this feeling and the many excuses we make to not go to school. This book is so funny and cute. Splat arrives to school worried and leaves school excited because of his good day at school. This would be a perfect book to read to students on the first day of school. It will also be a good idea to have a discussion with students about how they felt about coming to school on the first day.
It is Splat's first day of school and he is terrified. Once at school he learns cats are supposed to chase mice...He has a pet mouse. At lunch all his classmates see his pet mouse this causes quite a mess. Then he teaches his classmates that cats dont have to chase mice. He loves school and is ready to go to school the next day. This is a cute funny book to read child. It would be good to read on the first day of school if anyone was afraid to come that morning.
Love, love, love the illustrations! It is Splat's first day of school and he is SCARED. He doesn't want to go. He sneaks his pet mouse into his lunch to help him through the day. At school, he meets his very nice teacher who starts a lesson with "Cats chase mice." Splat questions that. At lunch, his pet mouse jumps out of the lunchbox and all the cats chase him. He hides behind a bottle which magnifies him scaring the cats. The teacher's new lesson is "Cats don't chase mice."
This book is about a cat named Splat, who was scared to go to school. His very first day of school Splat would give excuses so he wouldn’t have to go, but Splat’s mom took him to school anyway. Therefore, an event happens while he's at school--I thought the book was neat, especally the well detail illustrations! Although, I think this would be a collectors item and not for classroom use because it sends the wrong message of being the outcast of a group.
Audience: Boys and girls preschool to 2nd grade
Appeal: colorful, unique, animals (which kids love)
Application: I would use this for rhyming activity with the kids. The title itself has a rhyme and we could do a fun action that the students would have to do every time they saw a rhyming word. I could also work with them on pacing when reading a story. And helping the students relate the situation the cat is in to their own lives
Award List: Coldecott

Every time I read this one (and the rest of the Splat books), I stumble on words and phrasings. I'm not sure why it twists my tongue. Could just be me, but I'd suggest rehearsing a couple times before story time.
The school day isn't entirely believable and realistic but as I type this, I've begun thinking "Jess, it's a school for cats. What are you worrying about technicalities?"
Adorable illustrations. Kid's like Splat. It'll get read.

I read this book at a school bookfair and fell in love with it and had to buy it. Splat is a loving cat who teaches us that we don't have to give in to societys expectations. This book teaches a good lesson in friendship and that just because you're "not supposed" to be friends with someone dosent mean you can't. This book also teaches that if you don't agree with soemthing to stand for what you believe in. The illustrations are also very captivating.
Someone asked me last year for a starting-school book where everything wasn't okay by day two (for a child in that situation), but where everything eventually turns out okay, and you know there isn't much. Mostly, like Splat, it's all great by day two, or else it's never great because you're reading an 'evil school' children's novel, neither of which is very helpful to a child who's still miserable after three weeks at school.

Such cute illustrations! I wish the words would have blended into a cuter story but I can't say too much bad about it. I just wish it'd have been a little "more". Splat the Cat was the cutest thing in the world and Julia and I both loved him!
Splat goes to school and finds out he's a little bit different, different as in having a pet mouse. One can imagine the rest but the ending is a nice one that Julia especially cared for.

Fabulous. I love Scotton's illustrations, and the story in this is funny. Not much more is needed to elaborate except I really enjoyed the book. (Love the appearance of Russell the Sheep, too!)
Might work in a school-age storytime, though I think they'd miss some of the humor in the pictures. Perfect for a lap-read of many ages--especially with a good storyteller. I wonder how my sister would read this....

Fun back-to-school story about a cat, Splat, who's really not keen on the idea of going to school on the first day. He brings along his best friend, a mouse, and we wonder about how that will work out with his class of more typical milk-drinking, mouse-chasing kitties. Not sure how the illustrations are done but the effect of Splat's soft fuzziness against cartoony background details is charming.
