saya memiliki satu pemikiran sejak dulu. bahwa jika saya bertemu sosok yang saya cintai, dan menghabiskan seluruh sisa hidup saya dengannya nanti, saya ingin kematian menjemput saya duluan dibanding dia (egois ya? lol). karena bagi saya, ungkapan 'hingga maut memisahkan' jelas tidak dapat diatur dalam waktu yang sama. dan jika itu dapat terjadi, seperti sebuah bonus. jadi jika boleh memiliki satu keinginan egois terkait orang yang dicintai, saya akan memilih keinginan tadi. kisah yang diceritakan di buku ini bermula dari kematian sepasang suami istri di usia lanjutnya --dengan sakit yang diderita masing-masing, meninggalkan dua putra dan seorang putri, juga kisah percintaan mereka selama hidup yang tersebar di tiap surat yang ditinggalkan jack, sang suami, untuk istrinya, laurel -- dan mengakhiri kisah hidup mereka dengan maut yang menjemput pada waktu hampir bersamaan. tidak direncanakan. tapi datang menyambut begitu saja seolah menyempurnakan kebersamaan mereka dalam hidup yang telah diikat erat tali cinta. terpisah oleh maut, tapi juga dipersatukan oleh maut itu sendiri.

dari sana cerita bergulir ke orang-orang sekeliling mereka. keluarga-keluarga dan para pasangan lain di sekitar mereka. dari anak, tetangga, sanak saudara, relasi, hingga pelanggan penginapan yang mereka kelola selama hidup. kita disuguhi ragam kondisi kehidupan dan percintaan yang juga dialami orang-orang ini. orang-orang yang telah bersentuhan dengan mereka. tidak semuanya punya awalan atau perjalanan yang mulus, atau kisah happy ending. tapi cinta tetap ada. tidak melulu cinta antar kekasih. cinta juga ditemukan dari hubungan persaudaraan dan kekeluargaan. pada sesama. mereka memiliki banyak keluarga instan. orang-orang yang awalnya asing lalu terhubung satu sama lain dan menjadi bagian hidup seperti keluarga sendiri. ada banyak empati disana. juga ada banyak maaf. salah satunya dalam kisah cinta pasangan jack dan laurel sendiri. ditemukan belakangan oleh anak-anak mereka lewat surat-surat yang terkumpul di gudang.

akhir kata, jika hidup dan mati merupakan pasangan, saya rasa cinta dan maaf juga demikian...

ps. saya pernah melakukan hal serupa tema cerita buku ini, satu kali. dulu. meninggalkan satu buku penuh berisi tulisan tangan saya pada seseorang. tujuan saya, agar dia tetap masih dapat saya temani lewat tulisan tersebut, hari demi hari. hingga bertahun-tahun. karena --lain dengan kisah di buku ini dimana tulisan sang suami ditujukan pada istrinya-- saya, dulu, harus meninggalkan dia dengan memilih jalan lain. When I finished I definitely closed the book understanding the message the author, Jason Wright, was trying to get across to his readers: Forgiveness. The whole book is based on forgiveness. I liked Christmas Jars, but I loved The Wednesday Letters. Each of the characters were so real and charming. Okay, I like this book but I have some problems with it. I was really hoping for a feel good story and it was kind of disappointing. I liked the idea of the Wednesday letters. It is sweet to think that a husband would do this. I like the idea of redemption that is discussed in the story but it really bothers me when LDS authors don't just make their characters LDS! Talk about a made-for-tv movie to be featured on the Lifetime channel! Not my cup of tea---too cheesy and Hallmark-y (is that a word?). You could just hear the violin music playing in the background of this one. Yeah, it was a good, clean, easy read, and offered a good lesson on forgiveness and how we should be slow to judge others because we don't know their whole story, but SO much of it was too dramatized. While reading the reviews on this book, I was so excited to open and read. However, this book was NOT what I was expecting. I feel like the author was trying to hard to produce another acclaimed novel with a Title that entices, but failed to deliver. The adolescent verbage used by the characters cheapened the novel a bit. I would not have titled this book The Wednesday Letters due to the fact that the letters, although an integral part of the book, was not what the book was about.

I just finished this book. It was okay. I read a lot of reviews on Amazon about it saying they didn't care for the preachy, conservative-Christian viewpoint it touted. I didn't see an overbearing theme like that come across at all, and I was surprised that so many reviewers didn't care for the book for that reason. All the choices and reactions of the characters felt genuine, and while to some the choice of the main characters' mother may have seemed "ultra-conservative," I thought...moreI just finished this book. It was okay. I read a lot of reviews on Amazon about it saying they didn't care for the preachy, conservative-Christian viewpoint it touted. I didn't see an overbearing theme like that come across at all, and I was surprised that so many reviewers didn't care for the book for that reason. All the choices and reactions of the characters felt genuine, and while to some the choice of the main characters' mother may have seemed "ultra-conservative," I thought it was sincere, genuine, and honorable.

What I did find qualm with were the relatively shallow characters themselves. The book's premise is that the three main characters, Malcolm, Samantha, and Matthew, come home to VA for their parent's combined funeral. While home, they discover hoards of "Wednesday Letters" that their father wrote to their Mother every Wednesday for about 40 years. Other than Malcolm (who by far has the most complicated situation in the story), I found the remaining characters flat and un-compelling. Matthew has an estranged wife who suddenly makes a last minute appearance to tie up that loose end. Samantha is a would-be actress turned police officer, who does little to propel the plot other than consoling people. (A sudden loose end between her and her ex-husband is suddenly resolved at the end, when for the entire book he's barely mentioned.)

The overall plot moved well, but in the last few chapters, new characters pop up, say a few words to make amends, and crawl back into the woodwork from which them came. And the inital set up for Malcolm (which I was basically reading the book to find out how it would end) is resolved within a matter of pages, and a half-hearted epilogue that seems to say the author got tired of writing the story.

However, the book has received rave reviews from many other readers, and my mother-in-law adored it, so it could simply be that I didn't find a resonance with any of the characters. But in an entirely character driven plot (the whole story takes place over two and a half days,) that's a pretty big problem.(less)

This is a story of adult children who come home to bury their parents and find boxes of letters their father had written to their mother every Wednesday during their 39 years of marriage. Lots of secrets and lots of truths and how faith and forgiveness are the lessons good parents teach their children at any age. It reads fast and I cried.

I finished. I am a little dissapointed. Its ok, but nothing in comparison to his first book. Its a nice, quick story. I was expecting the perpetrator to be someone else, so that was a little twist. But not much of one. Let me know what you think in the comments section.

The story was pretty good. A good plot anyway. The writer on the other hand was kind of jumpy to me and didn't fill in all the details that needed to be in the story to really draw you in. Sometimes I had to guess with details about the charaters and even about half the conversations left me wondering because they didn't quite seem complete.

Novel itu berjudul The Wednesday Letters – Surat Cinta Hari Rabu karya Jason F. Wright yang diterbitkan Gagas Media.

Saat novel dibuka gw menemukan sepucuk surat dihalaman terakhir dan airmatapun sudah menetes… Gw teringat akan kesetiaan dan cinta Noah (The Notebook), Carter (A Walk To Remember), Oliver (A Love Story), Matthew (Only Love) ato seorang Ketua (Memoar Geisha) ….ahhh benarkan ada co’ setia seperti tokoh suami dalam novel ini? Mungkin ada baiknya kalo yang lum baca novel ini lewatkan aja dulu suratnya dan bacalah dari halaman pertama.

Cerita diawali dengan kisah sepasang suami istri pemilik sebuah penginapan di kota kecil, di usia mereka yang sudah senja Jack, sang suami mengidap kanker otak yang sudah tidak dapat disembuhkan. Waktu yang sekarang dinikmati bersama istri tercintanya Laurel adalah sebuah bonus karena dokter telah memvonisnya meninggal sejak 3 bulan sebelumnya. Laurel wanita tangguh dan selalu terlihat sehat, namun tanpa disangka malam itu ia terkena serangan stroke, Jack yang berusaha membantunya tidak sanggup berdiri atau berteriak lebih kencang minta pertolongan sehingga nyawa Laurel tak tertolong lagi. Hilang sudah kekasih dan nyawa hidup Jack yang sesungguhnya, dalam kesedihannya ia menulis surat kemudian ia berbaring memeluk istrinya dan menghembuskan nafas terakhirnya.

Kematian Jack dan Laurel membawa kembali anak-anaknya (Matthew, Malcolm dan Samantha) untuk berkumpul dirumah, tidak ada kesedihan yang menyayat layaknya perasaan yang biasanya dimiliki anak yang kehilangan orangtuanya. Mungkin inilah gambaran nyata kehidupan Amerika yang telah kehilangan jiwa. Permasalah yang dulu ditinggalkan Malcolm coba diendapkan dulu oleh Samantha dan Matthew bekerjasama dengan jaksa wilayah yang akan menikahi Rain (mantan pacar Malcolm). A&P yang membantu merapikan barang peninggalan Jack dan Laurel menemukan kardus yang berisi surat-surat Jack untuk Laurel, surat tersebut dikirimkan tiap hari rabu sesuai janji Jack diawal pernikahan mereka. Surat-surat tersebut membuka kisah cinta romantic kedua orangtua mereka, mengungkap sisi kekonyolan Jack (I Luv this guy, dia menunjukkan cintanya dengan cara yang kocak tapi indah), surat-surat Jack membuka mata ketiga anaknya akan perhatian orangtuanya pada perkembangan hidup anak-anaknya yang seringkali dianggap sebagai orang tua yang menjengkelkan, dan yang paling mengejutkan surat tersebut membuka rahasia keberadaan Malcolm dikeluarga tersebut. Kenyataan yang sangat memukul Malcolm karena selama hidupnya ia begitu membenci ayahnya dan sangat memuja ibunya.

Rahasia yang baru sedikit terbuka sangat melukai hati Malcolm, kehadiran Allyson adiknya Laurel membantu mereka menguak kehidupan orangtua mereka. Penjelasan Allyson bukan hanya meremukkan hati Malcolm tapi juga Samantha dan Matthew. Malcolm yang emosional berulangkali membuat masalah dan disaat yang sama mereka harus berkabung atas kematian orangtua dan berduka atas luka yang tidak pernah dibagi orangtua pada anak-anaknya. Satu per satu benang kusut itu terurai dan saat pemakaman hampir semua permasalahan tersebut diselesaikan bahkan dengan berita bahagia kehadiran Monica istri Matthew yang telah berhasil mendapatkan anak adopsi. Kejutan terjadi setelah pemakaman, kejutan ini membuat Malcolm kembali mendapatkan cintanya. Kebahagiaan Malcolm tidak berhenti sampai disitu karena rahasia sesungguhnya terbuka ketika pengacara, pendeta dan seluruh keluarga berkumpul membacakan surat terakhir yang ditulis Jack.

Jason Wright menurut gw kurang bagus bercerita di bagian awal, bahkan hampir meletakkannya kembali karena secara tidak adil gw langsung mbandingin dengan Spark & Segal tapi setelah kisah bergulir ke dalam surat-surat Jack dan permasalah yang ada ceritanya mulai mengalir dengan enak. Namun Jason mengakhiri ceritanya terlalu tergesa-gesa seolah tidak ada hari lain untuk menuntaskan semua permasalahannya. Satu hal yang sedikit mengganggu dari penterjemah adalah penggunaan panggilan “Dik” dan “Kak” untuk menterjemahkan “Sist” dan “Bro” mungkin akan lebih baik menggantinya dengan panggilan nama saja. Secara keseluruhan novel The Wednesday Letters – Surat Cinta Hari Rabu karya Jason F. Wright enak dibaca, bahasanya tidak berbunga-bunga dan menginspirasi “lovelife” pembacanya.

This book provided me with a lesson of hope in the face of mistakes made by most of the characters in the book: Matthew and his wife Monica whose marriage seemed to be over, Samantha and the courage she found to raise her daughter as a single mother, Uncle Joe whose life was a testament to the power of change after a lifetime of mistakes, A&P and her generosity, Aunt Allyson who finally found her true love, Pastor Doug whose life also offered a lesson of redemption and forgiveness, Rain who in the end realized her true love, and of course, Malcolm who made it through the astounding truth of the past a better man.
Running throughout the story is the power of love to heal and the power of faith in the Lord. From the book an excerpt of a song Jack wrote: "I must learn to ask of the Lord in all that I do. Yes, I will learn to ask of the Lord and all my dreams will come true."
We are not wearing rose colored glasses as we read about the strength of marriage. We observe the trials and the pain that accompanies love, but are left with only a satisfied sense of hope in the face of one of the greatest tests a marriage can endure.
In the background, there are always The Wednesday Letters which left me with an idea for my own life. They are such a wonderful tradition and, at times, I felt the strength of the letters were the real tie that bound this family together.
I feel like my review of this book is lacking. I can only say that, yes, I recommend this book to everyone! The lessons we are given are priceless. This is a book that will remain with me for a long time, and I am thankful to Jason Wright, the author, for sharing this story of love and hope with us! (less)

This is an entertaining read about love and forgiveness and family. I enjoyed the story, would have liked the ending to be a bit less abrupt, but the final chapter seems to leave the door open for a sequel. For me personally, the story could have been as good without all the religious references. That felt just the smallest bit like I was being preached at occasionally and seemed somewhat heavy-handed in that regard, could have been dialed back. I finished this book in just over a day. It's pretty sappy and reminded me a lot of The Notebook, which I liked better. But due to hormones and what have you, I did cry a bit. It is romantic, although the character development was a bit forced.
